I recently picked up The Ultimate Avengers on blu-ray along with the Hulk vs DVD and Doctor Strange DVD and was wondering if there are any other recommended Marvel or DC animated movies/cartoon series on DVD that are worth picking up. I've only watched the first Ultimate Avengers animated movie which was really good IMO.
Any suggestions, thoughts or comments?

On the Marvel side I quite liked Ultimate Avengers, Iron Man, Doctor Strange, and Hulk Vs. For me Planet Hulk was kind of meh.

On the DC side my favorites are Superman/Batman Apocalypse, Batman: Under the Red Hood, and Superman: Doomsday. Green Lantern First Flight was great up until the ending which I didn't care for. I was quite disapointed in All Star Superman.

Thanks for the response. Which iron man are you referring to?

There is an animated film called "Iron Man" or "Invincible Iron Man" (I don't remember which) that marvel released right after Ultimate Avengers. It was pretty good. Not to be confused with the animated TV series from the 90s.

IMO The only good Marvel one was Planet Hulk (and trust me that's not saying much). Most all of DC movies are pretty good. My personal favorite is "Under the Red Hood"

Edit: I like Hulk vs Wolverine. Thor...not so much.

Read the graphic novel of Under the Hood. The DVD is close to the raw intensity of the TPB, but the TPB is just better, and a reading necessity. Just read it already.

Your list is pretty much like mine, although I wasn't huge on the Iron Man animated movie, it's a lot better than Planet Hulk. That film should of been longer if it was going to stay close to the comic story.

I just picked up Thor: Tales of Asgard. It's not a bad film at all. I would say it's about on par with Next Avengers.

I'm hoping that Marvel gets it's contract with a new company soon, so they can start putting more of these out. Thor was suppose to come out last year.

While I'm a huge Marvel fan, DC has much better animated series. 90's Batman series, Superman, Justice League, The Batman, Batman Beyond, Teen Titans. Of course 90's X-Men and Spider-Man is really good.

The Spectacular Spider-Man and Wolverine & the X-Men is really good and came out a couple of years ago. Though honestly, I'm a little pissed with Marvel, they keep cancelling their best shows, and leaving those bullshit kid's shows running. And it looks like they are concentrating their better writers for the movies while DC is running circles around them in the animation dept., even with their weaker movies.

Also, I liked Justice League's Crisis on Infinite Earths and the new Green Lantern Emerald Knights.

One more thing, the books are always better, and these aren't books, its a different medium, meant for a broader audience. Keep that in mind, and you may enjoy them better. Although if it sucks, it sucks.

My personal favorite MARVEL Animated film is Ultimate Avengers.

DC sucks at making live action films but when it comes to Animated movies, they got it on LOCK! Better animation and story lines.

Batman: Under The Red Hood is the best one and I own all of them except that DC Shorts movie with Superman vs Shazam/Black Adam.
Hell, alot of those DC shorts beat out some of MARVEL's full length Animated films!

Man, that Iron Man movie gives me the willies. Especially when they shoot the monk. It was pretty gruesome. I liked Ultimate Avengers 1 more than 2. Crisis on Two Earths was one of the best DC movies, I think. Along with Batman: Under the Red Hood. There's also the Hellboy animated movies that were pretty damn good, I recommend those. I see them in the 4.99 bargain bins at reduced at HMVs.

With Disney on board with MARVEL they need to go ahead and stop playin with these animated movies.
They could bypass the whole straight to DVD thang and make CIVIL WAR a full length animated motion picture!

I bet it sale

And to not forget our roots,... MARVEL/Disney could go back and do other storylines as full length animated films to give fanboys and newcomers the correct storytelling in a 2hr. motion picture.

Hmmmm... I'd have to say DC has Marvel beat when it comes to the animated movies. Easily. As already mentioned by others; Batman Under the Red Hood is great. I just recently watched Supes/Bats Public Enemies and I enjoyed it quite a bit. Of course, you can always go back to the original; Batman Mask of the Phantasm. Probably the best out of all of them. I know it's not really part of the DC animated tribe, but it's classic.

For Marvel, Planet Hulk is pretty good. Hulk VS is probably my favorite. I even found Next Avengers enjoyable. But I then again I like those future/alternative stories. I wish SO BAD that they'd make an animated Old Man Logan movie.

Yeah, those are pretty good, too. They don't get the credit they deserve.

DC has Marvel beat on animated cartoons, too. I love Batman TAS, Batman Beyond, Justice League, JLU, Teen Titans, the Legion of Superheroes and Young Justice. I have Batman TAS, Batman Beyond, Justice League, JLU and Teen Titans on DVD, I have 3 DVDs from season 1 of the Legion. I think that's all they ever released. I know there was also Static Shock and the Zeta Project but neither of those aired here, at least with my knowledge. There was also a Krypto cartoon that aired in the mornings that was OK. I loved Spider-Man TAS and X-Men TAS, but they're not even comparable to the DCAU that Bruce Timm pioneered.

I grew up with Bruce Timm's animation but, I really don't care for the square faced, roster body style (big upper body/small lower body) characters. I tolerated it as a teen but, now... ehh.

Out of all the DC or Marvel animated movies, our favorite is Batman Under The Red Hood, we absolutely loved it.
Least favorite is Thor Tales of Asgard, it was completely unnecessary since it was almost exactly like the live action Thor movie. it would have worked better as a animated series.

The problem is, it changed. The proportions were better, and wasn't so... sharp. The muscles were a bit rounder.
True, it was still very distinctive Bruce Timm... square chins and broad chests. But by the time Superman TAS made the scene, they revised the style... and then revised it even more for JLA/JLU. Much starper points, Batman was impossibly muscular... more angular. I really don't like where they took the Timm style for JLU/U. So I definately understand where you're coming from.

So, this thread seems appropriate to "show off" some of my Blu-rays...

I just got the Superman and the Breaking Bad sets. I know Breaking Bad does not fit in this thread but, nobody posts here anymore and oh well, who doesn't like breaking bad anyways, Lol...

Yeah these are pretty good. As much as I am dedicated to Marvel their animated movie stuff have been eh, but DC's have been mostly awesome, and those titles above ^ are pretty good. DC definitely gone darker and bloodier with their animated movies.
