I don’t know if this site covers Warhammer stuff, but I thought this could be interesting to the casual action figure collector as well: Games Workshop has teamed up with Bandai to deliver a fully articulated and painted 7-inch Space Marine action figure.

This figure is part of a new partnership between Games Workshop and Bandai, which also includes smaller, cutesy collectible figurines.

The Space Marine action figure is said to include multiple weapons (with only a Bolt Rifle shown so far) as well as swappable parts, which I assume are extra hands.

A digital render of the figure has been shown but an unpainted prototype was also on display at this weekend’s Shizuoka Hobby Show. The Space Marine action figure will be available worldwide with details on pre-orders coming soon.

Personally, I’m not a huge Warhammer 40K fan although the universe and its designs always fascinated me and I could listen to friends who play the tabletop game all day when they talk about it, so this is a no-brainer for me. Will definitely be bought just as a cool looking action figure to play around with, and I will get extras for said friends who aren’t that interested in action figures. Yet.

This is really a situation where two companies that already get way too much of my money have teamed up to take more of my money. Yet, I can't complain. If they decide to make a Blood Angel or a Space Wolf I'm soooo down.

Edit: He's getting a bolter, but what about a chainsword?

Oh, these had the coolest looking armor! I think they were called Terminators? Those I'd like to see being made too.

They said extra weapons are included and adding a melee weapon makes the most sense to me.

Which one they include - I have no idea. Do these Space Marines use chainswords? The miniatures I know all have more traditional looking blades.

Ultramarines definitely use chainswords, but they also use power swords. power fists, lightning claws, thunder hammers -- There's a lot of possible options, but I'd think a chainsword is the most iconic.

Sweet. Looking forward to seeing what they'll include then

EDIT: By the way, here's another shot of the prototype from Warhammer Fest UK:

I think making an Ultramarine is a smart move, since they are 40k's poster boys, but I really do hope they will end up expanding this line some, because there are some truly awesome possibilities:

Space Wolves

Chaos Space Marine

Grey Knights

Dark Eldar

And so, so many more

Love to see GamesWorkshop branching out with the licensing- (I'm in a pretty big 40k FB group and you would be surprised how many fans/players HATE this) Once we saw the 40k pops (bought 'em all) then i knew something like this amazing figure couldn't be too far behind... Can't wait to see what else comes down the road!

Always found this series to be odd with the premise of emperor worship in a Catholic like arrangement. But always liked the Eldar faction in the games. Hope the Eldar will get some love from Bandai. Would love a Farseer Taldeer or Elenwe figure (unmasked), Kayleth, and definitely a Wraithknight too.

I was just the other day bitching about the fact that no one has ever made WH40K figures and *POOF* this announcement! Unbelieveable timing, and this prototype looks pretty fucking awesome. I recently picked up the Blood Angel and Ultramarine Funko Pops and I'll totally get the Bandai figure day-one.

Same here. I'm not a tabletop game player at all and any attempts to get into the novels have failed because they're all pretty horrible, but like you I find the universe and its designs completely fascinating so I never give up trying to get into it. At least the videogames are pretty good!

The space marines are all genetically modified to be huge and powerful, each faction getting the DNA of their Primarch, which are basically the children of the Emperor. In his day, the Emperor was a total bad ass, like Space-Conan meets Captain America-Jesus but after this big event called the Horus Heresy where some of the Primarchs started worshiping the Dark Gods/Chaos Lords, half of the Primarchs turned evil and they became Chaos Space Marines and they fight alongside demons and get mutated from dark energies, etc. Meanwhile the Emperor is all messed up and has to live inside this machine and pretty much no one gets to see him. Since then humans have been embroiled in war across the galaxy, and the Emperor is worshiped as this God-like being that is the only one that can guide mankind through this time.

This is maybe an oversimplification, and might not be 100% accurate since this is all from memory and it's been a while since I've read any 40k books or anything, but that's Pretty much the deal behind the whole religious aspect of the story.

Edit: The Space Wolf books by C.L. Werner are pretty awesome IMO, the Ciaphas Cain books are pretty sweet too. There are LOTS of 40k books, so there are some real stinkers in there too, but if anyone is looking for a decent bit of lore I'd recommend these.

The Gaunt's Ghosts book series (collected in Omnibus style now) are a great way to get into the 40K universe. Dan Abbnet is pretty dang good- and one of the better comic writers out there to boot) The focus is more on the human side of the 40k world with them being about the Imperial Guard (or whatever they call them now) with only occasional appearances of the superhuman Astartes (Space Marines)

Well, this was unexpected...

I'm kind of torn here: on the one hand, WH40K action figures are pretty much a dream come true for me; on the other, they're going to be made by Bandai, which means I'll never be able to afford them.

Why do they hate it? Do they want to keep pretending it's a fringe thing that's just outside of the mainstream? 'Cause I hear that gets 'em all the bitches.

Personally, I love when something I'm into gets cool merchandise.

For sure. They can make a lot of great figures out of this base armor.

I believe it. Certain die-hard fans always get angry once their favorite license tries something new. They fear they'll lose what they like most instead of seeing the possibilities change brings.

The insults I’ve seen towards action figure collectors from miniature folks though - it still baffles me how people who love vanilla can hate people who love chocolate instead of agreeing that both tastes great in its own right, sometimes even better when mixed.

It seems like Games Workshop is finally realizing they can just print money by letting other companies make stuff for them. Apparently that's due to a recent change in management and I'm all for it.

I don’t expect this to be too expensive, they want to sell it towards a huge crowd, I’d say something in the lower to upper 30 is a possible price.

If the paintjob is basic it could very well be something like 29.99 too.

I suppose But if one were Catholic, it feels a bit weird. The emperor fits the Anti-Christ persona then rather than a good guy from that perspective. Hard to root for him then lol.

I think it’s probably because the hobby has been more of an obtain, assemble, paint, play the game sort of deal with this series. When fully painted large scale (compared to the miniature size of the original line) figures are released, they probably see it as an avenue most would pursue, resulting in a dent in sales for the current lines.

But the way I see it, the ones who are likely to go and buy a figure will likely be those who would have otherwise never gotten it from the current lines anyway. Personally, there have been many times I’ve been on the GW page looking at the Wraithknight, but simply deciding not to buy because I don’t have the time or skill to paint it afterward.

To get it custom painted, is also pretty expensive for these Titan class units. So for folks like me, this is great, and I don’t think it will make a dent in the sales or current lines.

That's one of the classic ambiguities of the setting. According to 40K lore the Emperor literally is Jesus Christ, or rather Jesus is heavily implied if not stated outright to be one of the many personas adopted by the Emperor to shape the growth of mankind throughout history (another is Saint George, recalling the Emperor's defeat of the C'Tan known as the Void Dragon). Of course, the Emperor would then apparently try to quash religious worship all together at the beginning of the 30th millennium as some kind of attempt to starve Chaos, but even as pre-existing religions are being targeted, the Lectitio Divianatus, the unofficial and highly illegal cult of the Emperor as the one supreme and true God, is rapidly growing, with particularly devout individuals such as the former war-correspondent Euphrati Keeler displaying phenomenal, saintly powers of faith, including banishing demons, healing the afflicted and even stopping time altogether, suggesting that the Emperor is, in fact, some sort of supreme being within the 40K universe, which is reinforced by the fact that the forces of Chaos are scared shitless of whatever the Emperor actually is, and will only refer to him as "The Anathema" (which in contemporary terms means something irrevocably opposed and/or completely opposite to a given thing, group, person or point of view, and in archaic, biblical usage denotes something permanently and irrevocably devoted to God)

What you are saying is my point though. The lore in this manner comes across as blasphemous from a Catholic POV. That is why it feels weird......
