I thought I'd post a quick thread here, so that those who have a quick question can get an answer from me regarding customizing tips or tricks for figures. Please keep the questions short and to the point because that's how the answers are going to be to avoid any confusion.

There will be some tutorial style demos done in the future, but for the moment let's try some straightforward stuff. While most of the stuff covered will be more directly related to figures, most of these techniques can be used for vehicles, Transformers and just about anything else you may want to customize.

Also, a quick beginning comment: Don't expect your first (or even third) effort to be a "ROCKSTAR". It takes practice, patience, and familiarity with your tools and materials to get good at customizing. Don't let a project result that doesn't look like what you envisioned sour you on going forward. As long as you try to improve on each piece, you will make progress and get to the point where your finished piece looks like what you intended.

I've only done that once, for a Cybertron Dirge from Cybertron Thundercracker. Digital desert camo style. I found photographs of what I was going for to use as a guide/reference, and after choosing my paints, started with the lighter larger colors first. I used a 0 brush for most of that, but when it got down to the super tiny details, I took a toothpick and shaved the tip down as small as I could to paint with. There are guides out there for camoflauging toys... 'course different techniques would be in order depending on if you were painting a vehicle versus a human.

figurine: Historicus Forma :: Painting 3/6 Color DCUs & Woodland BDUs by Pete Beccera Jr.

vehicles: Six Steps for Painting Small Scale Armor by Brett Green

That's and excellent technique and final paint job. If your doing a traditional camo job (say on a Joe vehicle or something comparable) then an airbrush will help a ton. It's really diffcult to get the misted edges that spray camo has from a brush, although as show above you can get very satisfactoy results doing camo with a harder edge with a good assortment of brushes. A good example or photo reference is also very helpful.

When painting any camo though, it's important to remember that camoflauge's function is to break up hard lines to make it harder to see with the human eye, so the less rigid/more organic it is, the more effective it is.
