Part of the problem with Icons is that people trashed it right from the start. The hate always came down to something ridiculous like the figures weren't DCUC clones, someone bought a DC Direct figure 12 years ago and it broke, or the Icons figures weren't as tall as Marvel Legends. The DC fans who would've normally supported this line never gave it a chance, meaning the line never had enough sales to continue. DCC played their part in the fall of Icons but they aren't the only ones responsible.

The sad part is that the same thing is happening with DC Essentials.

Agreed. I have 95% of every action figure DC Direct released and 100% of every DC Collectibles action figure released….until the Icons. I bought a few, but they were just too small. As far as them not being DCUC, thank god for that. Those things are complete trash.

I really don’t care for DCUC either. I liked them when they first started but I think that was only because they were better than the Marvel Legends Toy Biz and Hasbro were putting out back in the day. Now that Marvel Legends is back in force and we’ve had DC Icons, I don’t really care for DCUC anymore. I picked up the Multiverse Batgirl of Burside a couple of months ago and returned it within 24 hrs. I just kept looking at it and thinking “Why would I ever choose this over my Icons Batgirl?”

I love Icons and I'm hoping they continue at least the multipacks alongside Essentials (they haven't ruled that out, last time I checked. Though ofcourse it isn't likely). But Essentials looks like it is going to be more the DC Legends that people wanted.

i just checked out some 'DC direct' figures and i dont like them. the crouch/hip area looks weird and some dont even have joints on the knees and are permanently posed at the knee, which i hate. DCUC are Superior

No they didn't. The Essential figures are back to 7 inches, which is the exact opposite of what people were complaining about with the scale of Icons.

Also, the Essentials line doesn't have individual sculpts, alternate hands, and looks dreadful. Plus, why should I support another DC line when DCC has shown me they have no interest in commitment?

Yea I am with you 100% on that one Dc Universe is still by far my favorite toy line. I know people hate those Hip joints but I kinda like them they never get loose. Dc Multiverse took a step forward with King Shark wave and even better with Justice League wave Flash and Aquaman but they still aren’t back up to the Dc universe level yet

I didn't like DCUC because the face sculpts were pretty bad across the board and the plastic felt cheap and quickly became discolored. I only bought the first 4 waves (I think) and was less than impressed by line, so sold them off. At the time they were the same price as DC Direct and DCD was much easier to find. The DCUC Nightwing was the final nail in the coffin for me. The face sculpt was horrendous and the one I finally tracked down, which was no easy feat, the back of the head was completely misshapen and mostly unpainted. The one thing the line had going for it was the selection of characters. But, because of DCUC (and Scott Nerdlick) I forever swore off Mattel.

Scott was And is the biggest asshole. Sounded like you must have been very unlucky with your Figures cuz I have that exact nightwing and he I saw badass but yeah only thing about Dc Universe I don’t like or didn’t was the Female Figures they are way too skinny. They seemed to fix that issue with the upcoming Batwoman wave

you are the first collector i know, say that. thats intresting. i had no problem with the face or color? the Four horsemen scultped that line.

Many people do. I just don't understand the love they get. I mean, they are good at what they do, which is undetailed, generic muscle bodies and skinny female bodies, but they don't seem to have a working understanding on human skull structure at all. And, I think they know it, and that's why they now focus their attention on creatures.

I'm a fan of Four Horsemen and I pledged quite a lot to Mythic Legions 2.0 but I agree with you for the most part. Their male bodies aren't that impressive and their female bodies are really too skinny especially for knights and characters who should be fighting. Having said that the detail and paint on the sculpts is excellent.
I didn't know they sculpted DCUC, I think they have come a long way since then especially with female faces because I'm not a big fan of DCUC figures.

I definitely agree that Scott Nightass was the biggest douche imaginable. That guy had a stick so far up his ass that it was coming out of his mouth every time he spoke. He was so arrogant and down talked upon the fans.

WIth that said, the quality control on Mattel's figures were all over the place. THe arms on my Nightwing and Harley suddenly became really sticky feeling and it felt like dust had fused into the plastic, which made it look and feel gross. Then you had all of those easily broken joints on the likes or Robin and Mercury to the gummy legs on a lot of other figures (I had 14 figures with gummy joints). Swamp Thing was a disaster and the dumbest decision Mattel ever made.

I remember catching that Scott (Toy Guru) dude on the Matteycollector forums. I remember him going on and on about how DCUC was primarily a toy line for kids that adults just happened to collect also even though I personally never saw any kids who looked remotely interested in DCUC when I was hunting. Every time forum members asked about getting more female characters in the line he'd tell us that little boys were the biggest market for DCUC and little boys don't want to buy girl characters. Another time they were bitching about the rising costs of doing business being the reason why they couldn't add more articulation, new tooling or more accessories. I brought up the fact that the packaging for DCUC figures was triple the size of packaging for similar action figure lines and that if DCUC went to a smaller, more simple package they could invest that extra money into the actual figures themselves. Toy Guru insisted that the enormous blister cards and packaging the figures in dynamic poses was crucial to selling DCUC figures. He couldn't even handle polite, constructive criticism and eventually none of the Mattel staff posted on the forums anymore. I feel like the line would have lasted longer if he hadn't been so stubborn and argumentative all the time. Having a forum like that was a great tool for Mattel to get instant feedback from their biggest customers and all they ever did was tell us how wrong we were all the time and how we weren't big enough fans if we cherry picked their toy lines and didn't support their subscriptions.

I never said I hated them, I loved them until Mattel began to get real cheap, then I bought them more for the sake of owning the characters rather than having good figures.

I still own my New Gods and other than Barda being too short, I love them.

One thing that really pushed me away from DCUC after the line ended was the overzealous fans. You had to:

1. Love DCUC more than any other toy line.
2. Hate Scot Neitlich and thoroughly damn him to hell in your post when something disappointed you about a DCUC figure (breaking, not being made, shipping delay, etc.).

The whole reason the Icons thread was started was because someone posted a couple pictures of the original Icons Batman in the DCUC thread and were told by several members to take their garbage DC Direct figure somewhere else. I didn't want that kind of negativity in my life and was excited about what DCC had to offer so I started selling my DCUC figures on eBay.

I still have some of my DCUC figures (mostly Batman related) but the group gets smaller every year. The only reason I've kept these figures is because DCC has yet to make acceptable substitutes of them.

Scott Nietlich was the brand manager for several of Mattel's lines up until a few years ago. He is an arrogant, condescending scumbag. He is known as ToyGuru (a name he gave himself, by the way.) Since he parted ways with Mattel he has been through several jobs, including Jakks, Jada, Loot Crate and others. I don't know, but I'm going to guess that he can't keep a job because he is a toxic presence in any place he goes.
