I wanted to create a place to talk about the DC Essentials figures that will be coming out next year. DC Collectibles recently posted a video to their Facebook with the following information about DCE:
  • The figures will have fewer points of articulation but will have greater range of movement. This is being done to ensure that the figures are sturdier.
  • The figures won't come with tons of hands and accessories. This is being done to help reduce the price. They also mentioned that fans were contacting them about the wrist pegs breaking when swapping the hands so for now the figures will only come with the hands seen in the package.
  • The may do deluxe figures later in the line with extra hands and accessories.
  • The figures will come with basic or "essential" accessories. They specifically mentioned (or we saw at SDCC) Aquaman's trident, Wonder Woman's lasso, Nightwing's escrima sticks, Deathstroke's gun and sword, and Batman's batarang.
  • The figures won't be limited to DC Rebirth designs. They were specifically asked about an alternate version of Superman and their response was that it was possible due to the DCE figures being designed with plain bodies.

It sounds like they are going for a "DC Legends style. Similar base bodies, somewhat limited articulation but with the intent of producing a wider range of characters and designs.

I'm not ready to get into another DC toyline until DCC proves themselves willing to go all in. When they release Jonah Hex, Spectre, Dr Fate, and any classic Flash rogue (preferably Grodd), then I'll consider getting into the line.

Oh, and Flash needs to have running hands.

I want five out of the eight figures shown so far so I'm debating whether or not to go all in. On one hand I'd rather they persist with Icons, but being more realistic supporting this new line probably has a higher chance of getting a wider variety of figures.

i'd like for them to come out with just a line of figures that will just continue to go on and on. same as marvel with their legends. apparently DC can't get it right.

See, I'm not taking a chance with a third DC line. I have no faith in DCC anymore. Hell, I have no faith in DC period righ tnow.

I really wish they would go back to the Classics/Multiverse line in full rather than start another new line, especially as theres loads of figures that could still be made to fill up gaps like the Flash Rogues etc

Mattel hasn't stopped doing the DC Multiverse line since they started doing 6" figures again last year; these DC lines being discussed here are lines by DC Collectibles, a separate entity from Mattel.

I think they've learned some lessons from Icons and the Animated Series which will help this line continue. Kevin mentioned in the video that some of the less popular Animated Series characters would only be released in multipacks along with a couple of fan favorite characters to help sell the set. They could apply that formula to Essentials when doing some of the characters Dr. Kain has mentioned.

They've never really had any reason to try an on going line before now. DC Direct was set up to specifically offer characters based on a specific body of work. That's why you only ever saw a couple of waves for things like The New Frontier or Brightest Day. Their attitude was basically "We've put it out and now we're moving on".

Yes I still collect the multiverse line figures but I am saying that I just wish DC would release more multiverse waves to finish off missing figures from the DCUC line (some more Flash & Batman rogues or civilians like Commissioner Gordon/Lois Lane/Business Suit Luthor would be great for example)

New video from DCC shows a classic/Rebirth 3.0 repaint of Superman! Around 1:20 in the video.

Eleven Essentials figures revealed and Wonder Woman is the only female. That's abysmal. If I can't reasonably expect Harley Quinn, Catwoman, Batgirl etc. in reasonable time from this line then I'm tempted to cancel my pre-orders and not bother. Hopefully there will be some more on display at Toy Fair proper.

Screw Catwoman, Harley, and Batgirl, where are Raven, Starfire, Wonder Girl, Golden Glider, Granny Goodness, and Mera? The last thing we need is another Harley figure.

Sure, but if they aren't going to show off major female characters like I listed then the chances of getting more minor female characters is even lower. Even Icons had revealed more female figures at this point than Essentials. Aside from Brainiac and Reverse Flash I'll get everything they have shown so far IF I think I'm also going to be able to get a variety of female characters.

I guess. Either way, DC has a lot to do before I will be willing to get into the Essentials line. At this point, I will probably buy the Flash related characters and my top favorites (like Jonah Hex, Spectre, and Dr Fate), but I'm not going to jump into the deep end again.

It was the same way with Icons. Except we’re getting Wonder Woman at the start of this line instead of at the end like with Icons.

It wasn't quite as bad. Icons had announced Harley Quinn and Atomica in the initial announcements or soon after. Two women out twelve isn't great but it's better than one out of eleven.

I'd like to know what lesson(s) people think DCC could've learned from previous lines. All I see is wish lists a mile long and refusals to pay more than $9.99 for anything. They should just cancel Essentials right now and let the market stew over it for four or five years.

Biggest lesson of all: COMMUNICATION!

They don't have a Facebook or Twitter account to communicate with them at all. They don't respond to emails. Everything with them is dead silence unless you are some big news website and even then, they don't really answer questions.
