I am not a star wars guy, but I would like to buy an X-wing fighter and a Luke Skywalker (in his x-wing flight suit) for display. I know there have been many versions of the x-wing fighter and Luke over the years, so my questions are what is the largest and most detailed version of the X-wing? What version of Luke has the most detail? Also what R2-D2 would work best with the X-wing? If you could post suggestions with pictures, that would be great.

I don't have pics of mine yet but the best one imo is the one from the Toys R Us Death Star Trench Battle set. It's a bit fatter than the 2002/2006 big X-Wings, but it has the most playability and is easier to handle.

It comes with a repainted VOTC X-Wing Luke, and a light saber which can be stored in the cockpit. Also has a joystick panel. Much easier to fit a pilot into the cockpit than previous versions(previous ones were tight fits). It's this reason why I think we will see a repaint of this paired with a new Vintage Jek Porkins in the future. No way Jek would be able to fit into the 2002/2006 models imo.

A revealable proton torpedo launcher is built underneath the nose and the front landing skid now has an opening cover. Beneath the cockpit is a hidden compartment to store stuff.

Overall I like it a lot. It even has a retractable sight system(the one Luke ditched in favor of the Force during his 2nd pass in the trench). Previously the only X-Wing that had a sight system was the Power FX X-Wing from 97, which had a non-removable Luke.

Also this X-Wing already comes with an R2D2 that fits perfectly.

If you can dig the slightly wider fuselage compared to the 2002/06 versions, I think this is the best one to get. Unfortunately, it is boxed with a mere repaint of Vader and his TIE Fighter, neither of which were retooled. Price is high too, $100. The X-Wing is the primary draw. If you don't already have Vader's TIE, the whole set is worth getting.

ah man, that sounds really badass. i have the dagobah crash one and i thought it was pretty rad. but all the additions like targeting computer and compartment makes that one even better.

Did you have the 02 or 06 version? I have the latter with the swamp moss and swamp monster.

The new one has a new detachable joystick/cockpit panel, connected by a rope so kids can't lose it. Basically you detach it to fit a figure in, and replace it once the figure is in. This makes it a LOT easier to get a plot in there. It's not a tight fit nor loose, it's just right.

The S-Foils may actually be the only reused parts from the old big X-Wing, even the rear cockpit glass is present as clear plastic pieces, NOT painted on like previous X-Wing toys!

ah yeah i have the one with the swamp bits, creature, and 5 POA Luke figure. i think that's the 06 one from the saga collection.

best r2 i'd say is from the target 3 pack since i believe it's a repaint of the ones where the 3rd leg retracts when the head is turned. always wanted that version but never was able to get it while on clearance. i imagine it should fit in any x-wing easily

best pilot luke is a tough one. none of them are perfect but overall i have the VOTC version in my x-wing which is a pretty decent new hope version.

The x-wing with the Death Star trench run set looks pretty sweet. How does its size (length and wingspan) compare with the Dagobah x-wing or wedges x-wing (target exclusive) or Red leaders X-wing?
I agree the VOTC x-wing Luke probably is the best out there right now.

I have the late 90s one. It's not bad, but I wouldn't recommend as the stickers just don't hold up at all. Though I don't have it, the death star trench one is quite good. It reminds me that I should have grabbed that oversize Falcon when it was on sale for under 100.

yeah that falcon... couldn't really afford it then, still can't justify the purchase today. i think if i did buy it, i'd have to fly it around the neighborhood making jet sounds and doing movie quotes. cuz that's not creepy at all.

That's the one I have too.

That R2 you mentioned is the same as the one in the Trench set iirc. Fits very well, does not fall out.

Overall dimensions are the same, EXCEPT having a slightly fatter fuselage iirc. Nothing like the original Kenner stumpy wing X-Wing though.
