I think everyone here is an addict and needs to stop collecting immediately. Especially if you're in my hunting grounds.
Seriously though I spend a lot less on toys then I used to on Marlboros and Beer ....wow I miss smoking |

That day when you realize you can't afford your hobby, that it's become an addiction, and you need to drastically cut back until you know you can control it, and you have a larger paycheck to support it. Girlfriend says you need to work on your priorities and grow up a bit before you start doing kid stuff again.
It's not fun. I was clean for a week. Then I slipped up and bought a Hulkbuster squad guy on eBay in the middle of the night while I was half asleep. My name is Michael Ramsey, and I'm addicted to plastic. ![]() |

If money gets too bad you've probably got at least a few figures that you could sell for a fair bit of money!
And I agree with someone who I can't be bothered to find the quote from, but limit yourself to one of each character, or in Iron Man's case only the most badass looking suits! Screw Winter Mission Iron man! Also if a cooler one than the one you've got materialises go for that! Getting Every figure is a great dream that I've had about every single toy line that I've ever been into but the reality of it is you just can't have all of them without running into problems. Unless your loaded, in which case you wouldn't be in this thread haha! |

Wow, this thread was made just for me,lol.
Two years ago I sold off all of my figs and figured I was done collecting. I sold off around 1000 Transformers and at least 100 Marvel Legends figs as well as a ton of Marvel Universe and some random line figs that I'd pick up if I liked them. Then last summer I saw a MP Grimlock at TRU and thought since I'd been so good at not buying anything, that one figure of my favorite Transformer would be a nice treat to myself. A year later I have totes full of Transformers and MU again, and just realized last night that in the next 3 months I'll be spending $1000 on 3rd party Transformers alone. That's not even counting the two Masterpieces I'm planning on getting as well as more MU figures and Transformers Prime figures. Hell, after seeing the pics for the first couple of waves of the new ML figs I planned on getting those as well. I've gotta stop, I really do. But coming on these boards and seeing all the pretty pictures really breaks me down, lol. |

Yeh I've been there,.. not to the severity but I've sold g1 transformers for cheap and regret it along with my TMNT sewer and ghostbuster firehouse, especially after looking at the dio's on here. I try to make sure I always have my priorities in order. Make sure rent, cable, phone, internet ,renter's insurance and electricity and what I got left is my variable. The money I can either pocket and save for a rainy day, groceries, luxuries like smokes, drinks, takeout, etc then toys. some paychecks it's $0, some it's $200, as long as you have a roof over your head, food in your belly, gf/partner is kept happy and your not a hobbit and stay home all the time go for buying toys! |

Nah. I don't have anything worth anything... because I don't have neough money to afford rare figures. And if I do find 'rare' ones, it's from a revision, and now everyone has it so my figure is literally worth nothing more than retail.

The best thing to do IMO is to keep your collection small by setting specific collecting goals; meaning certain teams, or good guys only, or stuff like that. Basically just buying only what you REALLY, REALLY want. That way you won't have the tendency to succumb to impulse buys or troop building or what have you.
So when the day arrives that for whatever reason you get out of collecting... the stuff you have is the stuff you really wanted, so it would be like deciding to quit while you're ahead and make it much easier to stop. And if you do decide to sell it all there is not that much to get rid of. |

The only way to quit is cold turkey.

I'm just giving it a break. The frequency I was buying them with wasn't the problem so much as the time spent in the car, and the small paycheck. Once I have more hours, don't put hunting before my family, friends and girlfriend (I was late for her going away party because I stopped to look for stuff...) I should be fine. I don't want to quit, none of my friends or family thinks I should... but we all agree I need to cut back. I AM an action figure collector, and have been for 15 years (and I'm 18 now).

WOW my addiction has had me use up two days of school's worth of money on two MU's & I have been guilty of using college book money on WWE Elite figures as well as some DC related stuff.
My name is Rafael Perez Jr. & I'm addicted to plastic *thinks of the "His name is Robert Paulsen" scene in Fight Club while typing this at my school library*

Well that's good because it helped you kick a hazardous habit. But still that's an issue if you end up blowing it all on figures

I'm working on getting my SSI. My doctors have pretty much told me I'm too crazy(bipolar) to work in an environment with others. I still feel the need to work however. So right now I'm not getting alot of money in. What I do get I get from odd jobs. This was fine for my collecting habit when I didn't have to worry about a new fiancee and a new family. Now that I have that to worry about though, I'm having to seriously cut back on collecting. I have to start saving money for christmas presents(for my chick, my daughter, and my chick's daughter), not to mention saving money for us to move in together come April of next year. I have to find some kind of steady under the table work...or forget about my SSI claim, say doctors be damned and go back to work. I've mostly been trading lately to get the figures I need, but that still runs into money because I have to have money to ship the other person's figures out. It's not as much money as I would spend buying the figures I would get from the other person in stores, but it's money I could be saving none the less. My name is Phillip Burkett...and I am addicted to plastic.

Me? I never had that since I've been an objective collector......set the objective get it and move on...course now I'm pretty much retired and haven't gotten to the point of being addictive...and if the Marvel Line turns you into an addict I might steer well clear of it....
I don't have that much money but with what I got my collection can pay for itself when I sell it off, and since I'm over the hump from being in the hole[Partially due to collecting now these days, but since I still live with my folks it was time to get through with collecting] for a while I don't plan to go back in that hole for plastic figures that really just sit on your shelf. I'm not addicted to plastic..... |

Toys are very expensive. I don't know how I managed my hobby in the past. It's absolutely nutty how much I spent collecting. Thankfully, I always managed to get through it somehow. My girlfriend at the time was so high maintenance and needed to go on holidays constantly. Thank goodness I didn't have any other vices, at all. As long as I don't spend more than I make, money isn't usually an issue. It's when I have work the next day and I'm up at all hours on eBay watching auctions. That's when it becomes a problem. Thankfully I've left those days behind me.

I never collected much, I just never got rid of anything, until G.I.Joe. hit, then it was me and my brother collecting them all.
I wasn't a completionist but I'd still grab a joe I thought was okay just to grab him, then I realized, my living space was being encroached by the things, so I started to sell and give em away. Now I've got maybe ten toys on display and another 25 crammed in a box, with 50 pending sale. Which isn't much, especially when I had close to 150-200 figures. Way happier now, but it takes a bit to look at the figure, at contemplate, "Am I really gonna want this thing in a few months?" It ain't easy and it took about three months to get the damned things out, but the deed is done. Still digging my scarlet spider. |
