After nearly a year of delay, G. I. Joe: Retaliation is finally out. The box-office success of the 2nd G. I. Joe movie may decide whether we’ll see a 3rd G. I. Joe movie or not. However already, Producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura is hinting another G. I. Joe movie but this isn’t an ordinary G. I. Joe Movie as you think it is.
Ever since the rebranding of G. I. Joe as "A Real American Hero", the mighty bond between the franchise and Hasbro’s Transformers is a strong one. In fact, Transformers Franchise began because of G. I. Joe; it was an idea to make transforming vehicles for Joes and Cobra led to the birth of the Transformers Franchise. There had been numerous crossovers between the two brands; from the Cartoon to Comic Books. However, certain recent laws prevented TV Crossovers in modern times. An idea of a proper Transformers-G.I.Joe Crossover never went away however. This was clearly seen in the brief project named "Unit-E". With the success of Michael Bay’s Transformers Live Action Movies and the recent G. I. Joe: Retaliation, the producer is hinting a Live Action Transformers-G. I. Joe Crossover. At a recent interview Mr. Lorenzo Di Bonaventura expressed his opinion. "I guess it’s possible. I don’t know. I think I probably at this moment, I resist it. I don’t know necessarily why, but I just think there’s so much that’s so rich in the mythologies that I don’t think they need to draw from the other. I think, I didn’t rule it out for me and I think those things have somehow for me, sort of in the past, they made me feel like a little bit cynical exercises in just drawing money out of something. It’s not to say you couldn’t do it well, but both these properties have such rich mythologies with so many characters, that you could go a lot of movies before you start running out of ideas of what to do. But it’s not to say, if we found the right… I’d hate to set out to do that, but if I heard a story where we went, “Oh my God…,” I could see a story right now about machination, machination of war and that could lead you sort of intrinsically to a Transformer. I think in general, Marvel is doing it within their own universe, right? And so it doesn’t feel gimmicky in that way. I think that’s what I would really try to resist." What do you think of this latest development? Do you think it's work? A hit or a miss? Let us in on your thoughts, over at the thread attached to this News Post.... [Read More] |

PhilStar has posted their interview with Lee Byung-hun, the actor who portrayed Storm Shadow in GI Joe Retaliation. It turns out that he did not want The Rock to take his shirt off next to him during scenes since he would look smaller in comparison. He also reveals that director Jon Chu wanted the fight scenes to be more brutal:
“Because if Dwayne took his shirt off, I would appear very small beside him.” (Laughs!) “You know, Jon said that he wanted the movie to be more real, so I really trained hard. Jon said he wanted to show the brutality of the fights and steer away from the uptight ninjas we’ve all seen before. He said, ‘When Storm Shadow gets hit in the face, I want to see the blood seeping through his white mask.’” Since Lee worked out to bulk up for the role, his original costume from Rise Of Cobra not longer fit him him(it was too small). Lee also revealed that he almost passed out during the fight scene(20+ takes) with Snake Eyes and talked more about his role in the movie: You have several difficult scenes in the movie. Which was the hardest to do? LBH: “The fight scene with Snake Eyes (played by martial artist Ray Park). It was very dangerous. The second-unit director was perfectionist so he kept on saying, ‘One more time, one more time!’ until I did the whole scene for more than 20 times. My suit was soaked in my sweat; it became so heavy. I was so exhausted that I nearly passed out. Then, he asked me to do it one more time.” PS: Does the size of the role matter to you? LBH: “Well, you know, for an actor what’s important is not whether or not your role is big or small; what counts is great presence on screen or that you add a great weight to the whole movie. I’m happy when people tell me that I have a strong presence in this movie. Of course, besides having more action scenes, Storm Shadow’s personal story is also being told and that’s very interesting. Instead of just having the mask on and having the action sequences, I think I was able to show Storm Shadow’s inner feelings. In the first G.I. Joe, Storm Shadow had this villain-kind of look while in the second one, there’s a cynical side of Storm Shadow. However, he’s able to show his emotions and the frustrations that he has to contain inside him because he was framed for things that he didn’t do. In the second movie, Storm Shadow’s character has been enriched in every respect and I’m very pleased about that.” The article in its entirety can be read at PhilStar.... [Read More] |

For those of us who wanted to attend a G.I.Joe themed custom class this year at JoeCon 2013, our options were limited. The G.I.Joe Collectors Club did not provide the fans an opportunity to sign up for an official event. So a few community leaders in the customs field put together a fan driven event called JoeCon Custom Jam. The even was to be held in the same hotel as the 2013 JoeCon event, until today.
Since it's so late in the game, we wanted to make sure all the board members who are attending this event, know that the JoeCon Custom Jam 2013 has been moved too one of the adjacent hotels. Final details have not yet been provided to us at this time, but check the thread attached to this news story for further updates pertaining to JoeCon's 2013 Custom Jam.... [Read More] |

Cinema Blend has posted an informative interview with DJ Cotrona. This interview reveals how the initial casting process went, Cotrona's thoughts on GI Joe Retaliation director Jon Chu & Bruce Willis, injuries on set and more. After the his 2nd meeting with Jon Chu & co, he pretty much figured out that he would be playing Flint, which he was satisfied with since Flint is one of his favorite characters. More on the casting process:
It was a similar process to all of them. You get a phone, they tell you that they’re doing the movie and with films like, with properties like this, you usually don’t get a script early on and you get material you’re going to prepare for your audition, it doesn’t tell you what character you’re going to be playing. It’s all very vague. I met with Jon and we did some scenes together and then after that it was just a series of meetings. I sat down with Jon and just talked about the franchise and his vision for it, how I felt about it, what type of movie I would like to see it be and I was really pleased to see we have a lot of same opinions. And then again, I would do more meetings with Lorenzo and it was more of the same conversations. You know, you wait around while they’re trying to figure out the casting, to make it gel so the movie can actually get green lit. And then they called back again and asked me to actually come play. Interestingly enough, some of the interviews included Jon Chu interviewing Cotrona where Cotrona role-played as Flint. While Retaliation introduces Flint to the movieverse, there wasn't much revealed about his back story(compared to Lady Jaye). Here's what Cotrona had to say about that: Yeah, you know, the Flint character in this film, we’re introducing. So, he’s kind of a younger version. So, you’re kind of watching his introduction into the... yeah, I mean the Flint we all know is leader. It’s him and Duke. We’re trying to illustrate it and hopefully if we continue more movies we’ll watch his full arc continue and we can watch him turn into the leader we’re used to seeing. But we see the things that, you know Flint’s kind of a hard ass who like to do things his own way. We see that with the way he is with Roadblock and the other guys. We know that the Flint and Lady Jaye storyline and where that goes, the beginning of that. So, we just want to hopefully get to grow it out a little more. To prepare for filming, Cortrona trained with Team Temp out of Los Angeles and utilized a body for some of the death defying scenes in the movie. It turns out that some of the cast was injured during filming, and Cotrona accidentally broke someone's broken nose. Cotrona was asked about how it was to be on set with Bruce Willis, and here's his response: No, I’m from Connecticut, but all my family is in the tri-state area. So, it’s very much that thing, I feel like I grew up with the unfamous version of this guy, but as an actor to work with him, I learned so much He’s very spontaneous. He always brings something new. He’s always throwing curve balls and it’s those spontaneous moments that makes, you know, the best moments in movies and he, I learned a lot from him. I hope I get to work with him again. Finally, here is what Cotrona wants to say to fans: I just want fans of G.I. Joe, I want them to just enjoy the ride and understand that this is a movie made by fans for fans. So, we want this to be the G.I. Joe movie that fans have been waiting for and we think that we did a pretty good job. The interview in its entirety can be read at Cinema Blend.... [Read More] |

Courtesy of HISSTANKer TheGabrielAngel we have received some cool images of Elodie Yung as Jinx of G. I. Joe: Retaliation. You'll find some never-before-seen images as well.
This is how her character was explained on the Official Production Notes: "Introduced to the film franchise, but a well-known character within the world of G.I. JOE is JINX, a female ninja and cousin of STORM SHADOW. “JINX is one of the characters I’ve always wanted to see on film,” recalls Chu. “She is sort of the princess of the Arashikage world, but doesn’t want the title. She hates it and wants to fight and do what SNAKE EYES does, but has always felt put in the corner.” For the role of JINX, filmmakers found their first female ninja warrior in actress Elodie Yung who appeared in the French parkour film DISTRICT 13: ULTIMATUM and most recently in the David Fincher-directed THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO. “Elodie made a huge impression and we just knew she would be perfect for JINX,” recalls Chu. “When she came in, she exuded such a strong presence that made it pretty clear that JINX was already alive in Elodie.” The classic saying that big things come in small packages certainly applies to Yung, who attacked the role with extreme focus and passion. “Elodie is deceiving because she is a small woman and very elegant, but can kick your butt,” says di Bonaventura. “At first glance, you may worry about her, but you quickly realize that she’s a killer, which is fun because it brings both sides of the equation.” Although already a black belt in karate, Yung went through rigorous physical training for the role. “We worked for about a month before shooting and focused on my cardio because of how demanding it all was,” recalls Yung. A large part of that preparation was training in the Chinese Martial Art Wushu, which entails extensive use of sword fighting. “I’ve done other action films before, so I was a bit familiar, but when I arrived here I quickly realized that fighting with two swords is completely different,” laughs Yung. “I’ve never seen anyone make such a huge leap from knowing nothing about swords to whipping around hitting her marks. It was amazing. You feel her grow as a warrior beyond just her character and I think the audience is really going to enjoy that journey,” says Chu." Check out Jinx, after the jump. Thanks TheGabrielAngel!... [Read More] |

Flickering Myth has posted a very lengthy and informative article titled "Operation Deception: The Making Of GI Joe Retaliation". This title gives us a very, very detailed look at what went on behind the scenes of GI Joe Retaliation, from concepts, filming, pre-visualization, special FX, and lot more.
Here's an interesting passage which explains the reasoning for the delay for 3D conversion: “They [Paramount] were looking at a lot of other films coming through and people enjoying them in 3D,” explains James Madigan. “We were looking at the film and this thing is screaming for it. It was one of those things where it needed it but there was no way it could fit into the schedule. The only solution was to move the June 29th release date and it is one of those movies you want to have it.” Madigan adds, “To be honest it was always coming up and we talked about it in the beginning and then it came up again. Jon had done Step Up 3D [2010]. Any kind of new technology Jon is a real master of. It was something he had in mind. I’m not saying that he set up all of his shots with an eye towards conversion but he thinks that way. When we were reviewing and creating things he was like, ‘This would be great in 3D.’ Sort of lamenting it because we weren’t doing it. No one wants to push the release date but when the producers offered to put the money on the table to do it, it was like, ‘Great!’ It was more Paramount seeing what they had and saying, ‘This is worth it.’” Madigan was pleased with the decision. “It looks great in 3D. It does feel like a movie that was always intended for it.” Read the article in its entirety here.... [Read More] |
