Handytoy has posted up:
  • Cobra Commander chase figure
  • Jungle Assault Cobra Commander
prototypes for auction on Ebay! Both figures are from the Pursuit of Cobra line though it's currently unknown which wave the Cobra Commander(Jungle Assault) figure will be released in, or could it be one of the canceled figures? Perhaps it isn't, and if it's not, what differences could it sport when it makes it to retail? Could be released as an Arctic Threat figure, as handytoy has this specific prototype listed? Click on the title bar to see more!

Comic Book Resources has a chance to chat with Max Brooks recently, about his upcoming GI Joe Hearts and Minds miniseries for IDW. For those of you attending WonderCon this weekend in San Francisco, an ashcan preview edition of this series will be available!

"Hearts and Minds" is billed as a grittier, more realistic version of the Real American Heroes and their villainous counterparts in Cobra. Brooks said, though, that his approach is not quite as muckraking as early promotion might suggest. "Sorry, that's my fault," Brooks said of the tone of the solicitation and press release. "I'm not going to pretend that I've done something that revolutionary with the franchise. I guess what I really mean is that it's just a little deeper and dirtier than the Joe I grew up with. I just wanted to try and see who these characters would be if they had to live in the real world. We talk about the Geneva Convention, human evolution, science versus morality, medical malpractice and a few other things that I'm still amazed Hasbro let me get away with."

The first issue of "Hearts and Minds" will feature solo stories starring Cobra's Major Bludd, illustrated by Chaykin, and the Joes' Spirit by Fuso. Brooks said that both stories will flesh out the characters beyond their usual portrayals. "Growing up, Major Bludd just seemed like the biggest scumbag. I mean, c'mon, to kill people for cash? That's just low. I wanted to see if there was a plausible reason for what he does, something that might make him a little harder to judge," Brooks said. "As far as Spirit was concerned, I used to be a huge fan of his, mainly because he had a gun that shot arrows (hey, we all gotta start somewhere). When I got a little older I realized what an ignorant stereotype he was...The Injun tracker? That would be fine for G.I. Joe circa 1880. He was a real challenge. How do you make him a natural tracker and not make it part of his heritage?"

Previewing future installments, Brooks said that other issues would star Joes Deep Six, Blowtorch, Doc and Tripwire, and Cobra operatives Firefly, Dr. Mindbender, and Interrogator.

"We also have a compilation of Cobra troopers, and the path they took into becoming terrorists," the writer told CBR.

In an effort to infuse realism in GI Joe Hearts and Minds, Brooks drew inspiration from his personal life:

"As with my other books, I did a lot of homework. I tried to ground every story in reality," Brooks said. "A couple of the stories are actually personal. I took elements from my own life and put them in this series. You don't get much more real than that."

Sideshow Collectibles has updated their GI Joe question and answers section! Their answers confirm some of the new figures they hinted at in past sections, and more! Confirmation on the classic Commando version of Snake Eyes, GI Joe Premium Format Figures, et al:

Q) Your decision to go with a more modern aesthetic in reintroducing the G.I. Joe characters to a rabidly loyal fanbase is a bold one, and I applaud you for it. I was especially pleased by the look of Firefly, who has the appearance of a G.I. Joe figure inserted into the world of, say, the Modern Warfare games. He’s recognizable for the cartoon/comic character he represents, but is absolutely believable as a combatant in a modern conflict. Downright dastardly. Best figure yet. My question is this: Who are your sources? It’s obvious that you’ve done more than simply bring modern weapons into the arena, especially with Firefly. Do you have people on staff who are knowledgeable of such things? Or are you bringing experienced hands in from the outside? Either way … job well done!
A) Many thanks! We’ll certainly share your positive comments with the design team working on these figures! Yes, many of our design and development team members are seriously into modern warfare, weaponry, and related hobbies like Air Soft. We do invite talented folks from the outside to consult from time to time, and lend their expertise, but the designs for the GI Joe line have come almost entirely from Seth Rinaldi, Jared Chapman, Tom Gilliland and the rest of the Sideshow crew.

Q) I was wondering if GUNG HO and ZARTAN are being thought of in your G.I. Joe 12-inch line?
A) Yes! Zartan is currently in development, and Gung Ho is on our list of candidates. We’re hopeful about introducing a new, bulky body before we get going on Gung Ho or Roadblock.

Q) I don’t know if anyone has asked/answered this question yet, but I would love to see vehicles in Sideshow’s 1/6 scale G.I. Joe line. The environments look great, now if you could only add 1/6 vehicles to its repertoire!
A) It is something we discuss, although we’re not ready to take the plunge on 1:6 vehicles yet. Perhaps, perhaps.

Q) Love your creations with the G.I. Joe line. One issue I notice is a lot of Cobras and only 2 Joes (so far). I know the bad guys always have the best Uniforms. I would love to see a Snow Serpent from the 85 Version. Please even out the Battle. Maybe Beach Head, Dusty, Flint, Hawk, etc. Again thanks for doing what you do!
A) Snow Serpent would make an amazing figure, no matter the scale or format. Beachhead and Flint are currently available for preorder, and Dusty and Hawk are both in development.

Q) I was very excited to learn that Sideshow will be developing a “battle helmet” version of Cobra Commander. Snake Eyes, like Cobra Commander, had two iconic facemasks/headsculps as well. What is the likelihood that a “commando” mask Snake Eyes will ever be in the works for the 1/6th scale?
A) Commando masked Snake Eyes is already in the works.

Q) I noticed that you mentioned plans for Scarlett, Baroness and Lady Jaye for your 12-inch G.I. Joe line; any plans for Cover Girl? I would love to see her in your line – your work is always amazing!
A) Cover Girl has definitely made the list.

Q) Anything new on the Sideshow military lines?
A) Yes, think Premium Format.

Q) When can we expect news on the 1st G.I. Joe Premium Format?
A) That’s still coming, but it’s a little bit off into the future.

Q) What about G.I. Joe and more environments?
A) Yes. We are spending a lot of time on G.I. Joe environments.

I then proceeded to extend her torso by cracking the lower half and raising the midjoint.
I also reshaped the thighs to give them a more feminine shape. Afterwards I hand-painted all the details.

Handytoy strikes again, as 2 more prototypes from the highly anticipated Pursuit of Cobra line have turned up on Ebay:
  • Arctic Threat Snake Eyes
  • Jungle Assault Duke which has the new head revealed at Toy Fair 2010
Now Hasbro has stated that some of the figures from the Pursuit of Cobra line that turned up on online auctions have been canceled while some were delayed. The Desert Battle Snake Eyes seen at Toy Fair sported the same parts as the Snake Eyes(Arctic Threat) figure shown here, but with a different paint job and lacked some of the accessories(some will end up with the Arctic Threat Destro). Could Arctic Threat Snake Eyes be delayed until later this winter, or spring 2011, along with the Shadow Tracker?

A line that most GI Joe fans miss is the beloved 25th Anniversary/Modern Era line. As Hasbro reinvents each brand annually for the new(and/or next) generation of younger fans, one can't deny that the Modern Era line of new figures based on the old classics is sorely missed. With the 30th Anniversary of GI Joe A Real American Hero approaching in 2 years, will Hasbro use 2012 as an opportunity to revisit the Modern Era line, and continue the success with the fans, of the 25th anniversary line?

Today we get a look at 2 of the canceled items that were set to debut at the tail end of the Modern Era line, the Comic Pack figures of Arctic Scarlett VS Arctic Cobra Commander. HISS Tank boards member Dryhawk37 got his hands on this set recently, and has reviewed them. Like the last comic packs, this set was to include a GI Joe Resolute comic, and Resolute is another labor of love the fans miss as well. To see how this pack of figures turned out, hit the discuss button!

Since Cobra Commander(Jungle Assault) is shown in what may be final production deco, could this figure be ready to go for winter this year, or spring 2011, along with the Shadow Tracker? Or is it destined to change considerably from what we see now?

The Alley Viper(City Strike) features swappable helmets, such as one used by the Resolute Alley Vipers! Sister site TFW2005 has reported that according to Advertising Age, The Hub will air at least an hour's worth of vintage programming each day when it debuts in fall:

But The Hub is also looking to pry open Hasbro's vaults and those of other production companies to program at least an hour's worth of vintage content from the 1980s to attract the parents of its target viewers.

Of course the 1st thing that comes to mind is the original GI Joe A Real American Hero series by Sunbow. So we have something for older fans, but how about the new? The article hints at the new series to launch on October 10th, including the new 26 episode GI Joe animated series:

The newest kid on the block, The Hub, also has the added pressure of what will likely be one of the last big cable network launches ever -- second only, perhaps, to Discovery sibling the Oprah Winfrey Network. But Margaret Loesch, CEO of the joint venture, is banking on more than two decades of experience in programming to children from her days as a producer of Hasbro programs such as "GI Joe," "My Little Pony" and "Transformers," all of which are expected to appear in revamped form when the network launches Oct. 1

Little is known about the upcoming series, other than the fact that Michael Bell auditioned for the role of General Hawk, and that Eric Bauza auditioned for Tunnel Rat. Will it really premiere on 10/10/2010?

USA Today interviewed longtime GI Joe writer Larry Hama recently. In this interview, USA Today went over details surrounding the return of the original GI Joe comic continuity, started in the 1980's by Marvel and will be continued starting on Free Comic Book Day 2010, with GI Joe #155-1/2, by IDW. Afterwards, starting with GI Joe #156, GI Joe A Real American Hero will become an ongoing title.

Here's what IDW editor Andy Schmidt has to say:

"It just made good sense to go back to the original continuity for the older fans and to give us an opportunity to show the newer fans how we got here in the first place," says Andy Schmidt, editor on all IDW's G.I. Joe titles. "Larry built that continuity up for years. It's a shame for it to be shelved permanently."

With this comic in particular, Schmidt says, "I think it's best to let Larry guide me. I don't force anything on him. He wrote this book for 15 years. I've been here five minutes. Larry leads, I follow."

Hama spoke about his creative freedom enjoyed on GI Joe Origins:

Hama's run on a few of the initial Origins issues sparked his interest to do more. "It was the first time someone had said, 'Hey, do what you want to do,' " he says. "Other times, they'd be like, 'We want it like old school.' My comment on that was, 'Well, I don't do it that way anymore.' Doing Origins, they said, 'Just do it the way you do it now.' So I had a bit more leeway."

Hama also gives some small hints on what to expect with the ongoing series:

Will there be anything huge that early on in the new Real American Hero? "There's a few big reveals and a few little shocks," Hama teases. "But it's more shocks about, 'Is that what was really going in with those characters?' or 'He's doing what to who?!' I try to come up with stuff like that, and then work back from it."

Be sure to check out your local comic stores and see if they are participating on Free Comic Book Day 2010, on May 1st!

In a move that may, or may not surprise you, Duke from GI Joe Rise of Cobra, aka Channing Tatum, has stated that he does not like action movies. Inthenews.co.uk talked with Tatum about his recent work, and it turns out, he prefers drama over action:

"I don't like action movies!" he laughed. "They're not that interesting. They're fun to do because of the physical element, I guess, but most of the exciting stuff, like running into an exploding building, they won't let you do that!"

He continued: "There's something absolutely exhilarating about [a scene of] sitting on a beach with someone and just opening up and trying to be really honest."

Awww, but what if Baroness goes back to being bad in GI Joe 2?
