Man, those look cool. I really hope Hiya gets around to making more Marines, though, specifically Winter and O’Neil (kind of surprised that they haven’t yet; they’re only the two most prominent characters in the whole game).

Generally when a sculpt is said to be soft it means that there's a lack of finer details.

Yes, this. A softer sculpt will see rounder edges where a hard edges should be, giving it a generally “soft” or less intricate look in the detailing.

By rubbery plastic, do you mean like the first revoltech evangelion figures type?
If it is so... man, those things began exuding plastic and whatnot over the years. That would be unfortunate for these guys.

I've never actually handled those Revoltech figures before, so I can't accurately compare to that. The closest comparison I can think of it some of the softer plastic used on NECA's Pacific Rim figures. Solid overall, but with a semi-pliable feeling to it.

These aren't based on Kenner toys, these are designs from the Colonial Marines video game.

Ok I see.

The aliens do look different.

In the game are the aliens being tested on?

The game doesn't really do much in the way of explaining anything, and this extends to the new types of aliens introduced. So the game is set on Hadley's Hope after the events of the film, for some reason the developers elected to totally ignore the ending of the movie where it was essentially nuked. So following that logic of disregarding source material there's still aliens in the colony, but then there are also several new types of aliens as well. There aren't any evil scientists working for any evil corporations and there aren't any other forms of alien life for them to use as hosts so we're left with no real reason for these new types of aliens other than "just because" and "we wanted to make something unique for boss fights." I guess they put about as much thought as to why there would be new types of aliens as they did to making sure they actually released a game that worked, so apparently not that much.

why did you extend the crusher's back legs all weird in almost every shot? no quadruped stands like that, the feet go right under the hips for stability

To show how far the legs can extend and for balancing in some shots. The figure is fairly front heavy due to the head, so it was easier to extend the back legs out to distribute that weight a bit more.

Call it artistic license. Wouldn’t be able to explore/fight through the classic Hadley’s Hope environment otherwise (the alternative would be to go the AvP2 route and drop the player onto another planet that just so happens to have another Weyland-Yutani “shake ‘n bake” colony on it, sitting right next to another crashed Space Jockey ship, loaded up with yet more xenomorph eggs). Besides, Bishop’s estimates for exactly how powerful the atmospheric processor’s meltdown will be are somewhat hyperbolic...

Not so. The Weyland-Yutani installations that the player explores over the course of the story are swarming with scientists, and it’s made quite explicit that W-Y has been carrying out extensive experiments into xenomorph biology.

I only played the game once at a friend's place when it came out so I barely remember any of the plot/explanations, I just remember being severely disappointed.

I played it for 13 hours straight when it first became available for purchase. It’s still one of my favourite games.
