Agreed; painted gold on Threepio is a guarantee I won't give a second thought (or even a first) on whether to get him... I just won't, period. That said, if you're looking for one the blinged out Figure-rise version makes for a wonderful placeholder if you're willing to put in a bit of work, and the MSRP is pretty much the same after Hasbro's price hikes.
