My experiences in that world may not be indicative of all HW/MB fans, but that's pretty much what I saw/read/heard back then.
Ah. I didn't realize you were still talking about then, over now. Thought it had moved back to present day/tense.

While I played with both as a kid, Hot Wheels gets my vote here. If just for the fact that I prefer their cars over Matchbox(which seem a little lackluster), and because Hot Wheels has the better Collector-oriented line now. Love the Boulevards

I will say that Hot Wheels is definitely putting out some great stuff. I really love their 80's throwback FE cars.

Also, they seem to have a new licensing agreement with Lamborghini, since there have been at least 4 new models released in the last few years. In the past, they'd only make the Countach, the Diablo, and the Murcielago. Now I've seen the Gallardo, the Reventon, the Estoque, and the Aventador.

(I've always been a big fan of Lambos since I first saw the movie Cannonball Run. Then I saw G1 Sideswipe and Sunstreaker on the shelf and that was all she wrote.)

Oh, yeah, in today's collector communities Hot Wheels is king of the 1:64th scale, no question.
