I would say look around and see what grabs your eye. The Japanese stuff looks good but can cost a bit plus shipping. The US stuff depending on the line can be either great(Marvel Legends) or trash(other barely articulated lines). If you are into figures and looking at new(recent) stuff only then I suggest the Marvel Infinite and DC Multiverse line. Distribution tends to suck but the figures at the 9.99 price point aren't bad considering. Depending on your budget you may want to go through some of the pages here and see what people are saying about the different lines that are out.

All depends on how much are you willing to spend, Transformers Masterpieces are the best and range from $60-$200. Kaiyodo's Revoltech, Max Factory's Figma, and Bandai's S.H. Figuarts are currently the best Japanese line out there and they average $50 and more, but there's always more. So it all depends on how much you want to spend and what are your favorites.

In my opinion, I wouldn't ask us which toys to start with. You should ask yourself which figures or items you think are so cool, you simply can't live without. Then I am sure the collection will grow from there. I try to focus on one thing, TMNT. But from time to time I do pick up other things that are just too damn cool to pass up.
