One collector suggests shallow wide totes, just like these clear totes on the lower right hand corner. Reduces paint rub, reduces weight, and reduces toy damage.

I've just packed up my entire toy collection, managed to get it into 12 of the largest (but shallow) IKEA samla boxes, plus 3 of the very largest for my Transformers Titans.

Each figure is in an individual bag with accessories and instructions/little note on what it is so if I snuff it then some poor bugger has half a chance of making some money out of it.

You have to be careful with what bags you use - what you want is the 'acid free' bags that you would store comics in (archival quality).

Most importantly though you need to store it in a room which is temperature controlled and gets no sunlight. Obviously nothing should have any batteries in it.

I like these little stackable "shoe" size boxes. Easy to sort by Team or whatever way you want to sort. Keeps figures from getting too weighted down by keeping them small- even though I'm NOT overly concerned with anything like bending, breaking, or paintrub (though Kingpin IS in a plastic bag to keep from getting anything on his suit) These are the figures I like to have access too for either parts or pictures- down in the garage and exercise room the bins are larger and less care is taken with them- it's more about space than anything else. Also- because I don't collect to profit I just don't care much about condition- OK is just as well as Excellent as far as I'm concerned (The older I get the less concerned with how well my toys are holding up, I become) lol

I found this article on One Per Case years ago. It goes over the type of zip bags to use that are safe for your figures and where to order them.

Ive used plastic bags and everything from boxes to storage totes. I find totes the best to keep em from crushing damage. It really natters where ya put ‘em temperaturewise.
I saw on the interwebz all sorts of cool sales on totes. Some 18 gallons for only $1.50. Yet I only saw such pics when the sale is long over! If anyone sees sales on totes make sure to post it on this thread...

I've got to have clear totes or I'll be spending way too long opening everything up to find what I'm looking for...

Polypropylene is the same stuff the best comic storage bags are made of. Not cheap but the US Constitution and copies of the DI are stored in a version of it.

That article got an extensive reply in the comments section about plasticizers being another worthy thing to consider.

clear is better for me than labeling because I can see what's inside. So instead of "DC Misc." I can just see it's a ton of old DCUC figures and catch a glimpse of what I'm looking for... labeling is nice "add-on" to a clear box though especially with the smaller bins I use..."Defenders" "ThunderCats" "JLA Movie" etc etc...
