For the Mandarin thing, I just logic-ed the movie from this saying:

Leave science to Earth, and leave magic to Asgard.

There is absolutely no way the Mandarin as he exists in comics would have ever worked in a movie in today's modern society. Shane Black said it himself, that the Mandarin in today's era is a racist caricature of a villain and would not put him in the movie unless he was reimagined.

I thought the Mandarin, prior to the reveal, was way too overly theatrical with his terrorism trailers that kept popping up on TV and was worried this was going to feel extremely cliche. Then the reveal made it all make sense as to why and kept the movie grounded and not just another TDKR Bane type character.

Matt fraction in the comics reimagined the Mandarin as well and so many comic fans shat all over him for it because they loved the Mandarin from the "Haunted" storyline. While I agree that it (Haunted) was the best story I've read about the Mandarin, it also kept him the stetreotypical mystical Kung Fu Asian villain.

Times have changed since the Mandarin was first created and the Peoples Republic of China had its doors closed to the world and no one could pay a visit. They also represent a huge market for distributing movies and American goods. Kill that by making a character with Chinese stereotypical cultural references from America who gets beat up in the end by the Americans and can people really not do the math as to why it would have been a terrible idea?

So why not just keep the terrorist thing going like the movie trailers intended? Because the angle has been played out to death post 9/11. That the Mandarin was more of a smokescreen for a larger effort and was just a symbol of power was brilliant...for a movie. A villain you could never see or touch but could strike at any moment at anytime is the epitome of terrorism. We found Bin Laden...finding the Mandarin stopped nothing at that point in time.

But damn...Extremis dudes were crazy powerful and all the armors that got ripped to shreds or chopped in half made me sad, lol. The only real character who disappointed me was Maya Hansen. Her character was pretty worthless in the movie.

Also...am I the only one who caught that Tony is now fused with his version of Extremis in the end hence the final "I am Iron Man"?!

The movie was so well thought out, so good, that it also becomes a huge disappointment. There are events that occur within the movie that truly build up the suspense, and the outcome is so cleverly executed to the point that it ended up being a big let down as it made the last act of the movie boring because everything is played out so safe. The other issue with the movie is that it plays out just like you would expect from a comic movie. That is not to say it is a bad thing, but it leaves a lot to be desired. There is a lot of great dialog, one liners, and the scene after the credits is great, but the more comic movies we are getting lately are making appreciate Dredd more and more than I did before. IM3 is definitely worth seeing, it isn't as good as the first movie, but it is far superior to the second one. It's just that playing it safe and becoming predictable just made the roller coaster ride fizzle out.

Saw it on Saturday, and I thought it was great. I don't think the ending was a let down at all. To use your roller-coaster analogy, Dr. Kain, do you expect a sudden, abrupt stop at the end, or one that slowly coasts to a gentle stop before letting you out?

I felt there were enough twists and turns to keep me entertained throughout the film (especially the end credits sceen). About the only thing that I *might* have an issue with is some of Tony's epilogue at the end that wrapped up Pepper's issue and basically eliminated Tony's shrapnel problem. But the seed was already planted about Stark having already figured out the flaw in Extremis 13 years prior (and while drunk, too).

I also didn't see a problem with the handling of Tony's PTSD. They didn't say he was completed cured, but he did find better coping mechanisms for dealing with it. Besides, his ego probably beat it into submission anyway ("This brain ain't big enough for the both of us, pilgrim").

IMHO, Iron Man 3 fits in well with the two previous films and Shane Black definitely followed Favreau's lead in style, tone and character development. I honestly loved Ben Kingsley in this and I thought the filmmakers did a great job adapting the Mandarin for the big screen. Guy Pierce was great as well.

I hope that if there is a 4th Iron Man, we will see a proper Rescue and a new War Machine.

I couldn't agree more with this ^^.

I was very disappointed to hear that of all the great reviews and positive word of mouth that this movie has received, it's once again my fellow Comic Book fans that are spewing the most vitriol in the comments section, although I'm certainly not surprised.

I am a huge Iron Man comic book fan, but was not disappointed in how this Mandarin was executed in the least bit. Mostly because I'd rather have an Iron Man movie that doesn't piss off the rest of the world and is instead embraced as this one was.

I'm excited to see if having the shrapnel removed via Extremis proceedure also means in Avengers 2 he will not only be able to control his next armor at the speed of thought...but also be able to see through satellites as well (taking a page straight out of the Extremis comic source material). What I don't quite remember in the comics, is why Tony ever got his arc reactor put back in his chest when it was long removed during the whole Extremis through Director of Shield storylines all the way up to Matt Fractions run? Seeing as how I have all the books I suppose I could go back and find out, but I'm lazy :P oh well.

I want an Extremis'd out Killian figure also!

You basically said everything I would have. The people I've seen complaining are nearly all the comics fans that wanted Mandarin with his rings and Foom flying around, never mind most fans have a different idea of how that should play out. I never believed that the Mandarin would work and couldn't imagine how they would do it without it being terrible. I was so worried when A.I.M. seemed to be taking center stage and the Mandarin was still there was I thought there would not be enough time to do both justice in one movie. I was relieved when Ben Kingsley went all Shakespeare on us. The Mandarin was just the marketing campaign for this movie just as he was there to cover up for A.I.M. in the story. I think that's kind of a nice parallel and maybe helps the audience connect to the universe a bit because we thought we knew what he was all about just like the people in the movie did.

Ok guys, I did some snooping around and found out that kid (Ty Simpkins) is signed for 3 movies. AND it's possible he may become NOVA!!!! This is what he says:

"Simpkins: Well, I actually never thought about that but we did read an article–have you ever heard about the comic book Nova? We read an article about how Harley might be my middle name and Keener could be my mom’s maiden name and my dad could have joined the Nova Corps–then my real name’s Richie and I actually figure it out because my mom gets killed by an alien, then I figure out that my dad joined the Nova Corps, and I join the Nova Corps and I become Nova."

The full article can be found here:

And one other spoiler, Dominic Cooper is coming back as Howard Stark for Captain America 2
