It's a 4 bot combiner and each bot has three modes outside of combination. The mecha's name is Dancouga. I implore you to give it and the series a quick Google search as it'll answer your questions and put you on to a great series.

Hey thanks! It's actually ink and acrylic. The matte charcoal look happens when the ink washes build up. A dry brush can be used to move the ink around. It works great for varied depths of light.
