On the subject of dioramas... some of us don't have nifty playsets to use as dioramas. So I gotta make do with what I DO have...

Doubt it, as in it'd affect the major players in the toy relm, mainly because you can sculpt a wolverine head and sell it for mass production without paying Marvel a shit ton of $$. I would say it'd be neat to scan a MU weapon then make a sheet full of them, or copy a hand part to use instead of taking it off another figure. It would cut down on customizing costs long term, but a semi steep bill to swallow in upfront costs, plus you need a decent sized area to operate it, especially the wood one, as you'd be chocking on sawdust. Someday toys will reach a level of realism that it ways towards the line of being human being true ai. I would love to have an action figure that was remote controlled and did what I wanted or responded to voice commands, think Small Soldiers lol.

Think of it in terms of bootlegs though. With the 3d sculpting/printing stuff, you could scan something like a Hammer Drone and flood the internet with cheap reproductions.

You know I was just going to make a thread asking if Hasbro had a variant of this box set other than the FF pack

^Use hot glue and then paint that. Translucent and much lighter than clay.

Post pics if you do make flames, however you do it. I might have to steal this idea for Ghostrider's bike. It doesn't look like we're getting one anytime soon and I sure as hell can't find a suitable one for him that actually fits. I've found 1:18 bikes but they're just too damn small for the figure. This bike fits very well.

Well, Ghost Rider II is coming before long. I doubt it'll get it's own figure line, but maybe a Target exclusive MU movie tie-in sort of thing...?

Naa! Stereo Lithography is becoming more common but it's still a ways out for casual toymaking. I know many model-making companies that have their CG files made that way though, them resin cast the master to sell as kits. that's a lot different than making casual originals or making masters for ony a few castings (again, the castings would be resin to cut costs- not originals made by the machine in plastic).

BUT...an enterprising company could make a lot of money selling resin parts for MU/SW/GI Joe dioramas!

I own one of those, just haven't gotten around to doing much with it yet. It's collecting dust in my basement along with my 3D plastic mold injector, a massive $20,000 wide format printer that prints up to 5 feet wide, any length, up to 1 inch thick, a pad printer. I could literally start a toy factory (which at one point was my dream) but I realized how much work it actually takes even after getting the equipment. Plus people are cheap and unwilling to pay me for the amount of time and money it would cost for me to get this stuff sorted. Let's say I made a cool playset, people would want to pay no more than $30 for it and it took me $50 in plastic to cast one prototype, $100 to cast a silicone rubber mold. Months to design it, 10 hours to machine it, etc. Also, you've got to realize that these machines go through wear and tear. It's simply not a good idea to have the machine arm carve your entire prototype and mass produce the product through the machine which while easy would quickly burn out your very expensive machine. Casting a head is one thing but when you get complex, there's really no money in it at all. Like I said, people are cheapskates. They want to pay Hasbro and Mattel prices, and because they wouldn't know who I am, they'd expect to pay even less for my "no name" toys. I do, however, produce some pretty badass customs.

Actually, originals are usually made with wax or a kind of tooling board made from a wood base. This is easier on the machine and milling bit than plastic and metal.
