I don't think there's a thread like this, but I apologize If there is.

In your own comic collection, how do you organize your books? The reason I ask, is because I just filled up my first box, and need to begin a 2nd box, but I'm wondering how to begin. My first box is organized alphabetically by title, then issue number. How to begin a second box though?

So, how do you organize your comics? Especially after the first box. (to help me with my problem)

I think everyone develops their own organizational style with age and time. And what works for one person won't necessarily make any sense to the next person. So here's how I organize mine and you can decide if that would work for you or not.

I usually organize them by publisher, theme/character, series, date of publication, and format. For example, my Marvel box would look something like this:

Marvel
- Deadpool
-- Deadpool issues
-- Deadpool one-shots
-- Deadpool TPBs
- Spider-Man (character)
-- Spectacular Spider-Man issues
-- Ultimate Spider-Man issues
- Earth X (Series)
-- Earth X complete run
-- Universe X complete run
-- Paradise X complete run
- X-Men (character/theme)
-- Uncanny X-Men issues
-- X-Force issues
-- Wolverine issues

Then there would be a similar setup for DC and Misc. stuff. The only exception to this rule is my Transformers comics, which have separate long boxes. Those are still organized the same way as above, except there is no character/theme breakdown. It's all purely based on publication dates and book titles.

Sweet, that's exactly what I did before even reading your reply! Thanks lol

I'd still like to hear what anyone else does and what is in your collections. :]

I don't have a ton of individual comic books, I mostly buy TPB and then I have a lot of stored digitally. Not too much to organize as it if mostly X-Men related, Ultimate Universe, and Green Lantern.

Glad I can help. And I'm curious to see how others organize their comics as well.

One more quick bit about publisher crossover books. For series like JLA/Avengers (Avengers/JLA) and Amalgam, I put them in the Misc box, grouped by publication date then by series name.

I find it's easier to do that than split them up between the publishers or put them all in one or the other.

I have my Avengers in their own boxes. The first one has Volume one and it flows out into a second which also contains Vol2,3,4 and New Avengers Vol1. My third Avengers box holds Iron man, New Avengers Vol2, Intiative, Mighty Avengers and all minis. I have a long box for my DC which has also moved into short box through Detective. The other four boxes have random series all over the place each in alphabetical order. One for intense has all my Marvel books I only have a couple issues of and my mutant books. The others are eclectic with Avengers team members in one, another with various team books and the last whoever.

I sprinkle this liberally with Silver Age goodies.

My comic books are organized in chronological order from left-to-right on my shelves. Since I don't have many anyway, it's not a complicated system. I only have 3 volumes of Battle Angel Alita; but there are 9 in total. I only have 3 volumes of Dragon Ball; but there are... I don't know, several more. I intend to complete both series eventually.
Also, I have the first 8 issues of the original TMNT comic book in a huge collectors' volume; as well as the first 2 volumes of the new IDW series right beside it. Next to those, I have the first 2 volumes of Halo: The Fall of Reach, although I won't be collecting anymore, since it's severely dumbed down in comparison to the novel, which I have. Next to that are The Matrix comics, volumes 1 and 2 (there are only 2 volumes). Next to that are 6 collector volumes of Calvin and Hobbes, which are not in any strict chronological order since their contents are not in any chronological order either.
I should also mention my comic books are on the same shelf as my Michael Crichton novels.

I do by Title and Number

Since currently I am collecting The New 52's Aquaman*, Talon, Justice League, and the Lanterns (Green, Corps, Red, and New Guardians)

*Only reason is the Story in Aquaman and Justice League are the same event once Throne of Atlantis ends I'll be doing Talon, Justice League, Justice League of America, and the Lanterns

I put the Lanterns, Aquaman, Justice League, Talon

For the Zero's I put Talon, Green Lantern Corps and Red Lantern #0 in front, Green Lantern and Justice League #0 in the middle, for the Random 0's I just have them stored

Just branched into my second DC box which it done alphabetically. I have one box with just Avengers vol 1 and it's annuals with a second with the other series and mini's. All the New Avengers fit snug in there but they are getting ready to get larger. I have a random box of Marvel stuff with X-men at one side and Iron Man in the middle. My solo Avengers titles fit in one box with Tales to Astonish, Tales of Suspense and Spiderman in another. I put Defenders Alpha Flight and FF is seperate boxes with other longer runs filled in. I do know people who number each box and keep a list of what is in it with books put in it as they get them but I would hate to loose that list.

The best way would be for you to put the ones you like the most and get the most to have their own boxes that are easy top access while books you sample or just stop getting in shared boxes. Never be afraid to reorganize, Iron Man has moved place to place many times.
