Judging all humans individually based on merit, still a pipe dream in 2016. I appreciate the eloquent remarks. I see some disturbing comments from certain people and I'm reminded of how appalled I was by photos in history books highlighting weirdos with signs supporting segregation in the 1960's. Like, you're on the wrong side of history, bruh. The sausage fests in movies and tv that dudes enjoyed for decades are diminishing, and women are enjoying nerdly pursuits more than ever. Sharing isn't so bad - without it I would not have met and married my own fine, foxy lady nerd! (two years in March!) People treat feminism like it's a bad word because many on both sides have embraced extremist notions of it. All it really stands for is "equality". If that threatens you, then you are very very small.
And come on guys, Kate McKinnon is incredibly talented. Both McKinnon and Wiig were phenomenal on SNL. Melissa McCarthy is admittedly pretty terrible, so I feel like she drags the overall quality down a bit. There are enough talented individuals attached to this thing that I've found reasonable cause for optimism, though. To pass final judgement on this before we've seen a millisecond of footage is asinine. You just know that everyone bashing on the movie in this thread is gonna try and see it opening night XD Last edited by Black Arbor; 01-10-2016 at 10:36 AM.. |

![]() That seems fairly spot on. It's like she's trying to be Chris Farley, minus the parts that made Chris Farley funny. She's awful. The other three central cast members are going to have to lift her up (though not literally, thankfully), but they're all really funny people. All I was saying is judge the thing on its own merits, not by the fact that it has ladies in it. |

The fact that their bodies are part of their conversation at all is a problem. Criticizing their comedic skills, fine. But what do their looks have to do with it? When Mattel made figures of the original Ghostbusters, was anyone saying, "I don't want action figures of those ugly men."? It just doesn't happen with men, and it shouldn't happen with women.
Like Benedict Cumberbatch for instance, I think that man has the wrong-ass face for Dr. Strange... Last edited by TheMattMan095; 01-10-2016 at 05:53 PM.. |

That costume is KICK. ASS. I was worried they'd go with the modern black and red outfit the good doctor has been sporting. I'm looking forward to Dr. Strange more than Civil War to be honest. I used to LOVE the supernatural side of Marvel. Bring on Strange, Ghost Rider, Morbius, Blade and the Nightstalkers, all the guys I loved reading when I was growing up. I'd probably fall into a coma of awesome if they grouped them together for a Midnight Sons movie.
As for Ghostbusters I like the first one and as far as I'm concerned that's the only one in existence. Don't care about the sequel and I don't care about any reboots regardless who stars in them. One and done for me. |

I agree the costume is pretty good. They made it really oldschool it looks like, which is surprising.
I think Ghost Rider, Blade, and Strange would go together nicely when in a shared universe, Snake. Last edited by TheMattMan095; 01-10-2016 at 12:31 PM.. |

I grew up reading all the characters in the Midnight Sons which had Ghost Rider/Dan Ketch, Johnny Blaze, Vengeance, Morbius, Blade and the Nightstalkers, the Darkhold Redeemers, and Dr. Strange but if I recall he couldn't actively get involved for some reason so he kind of pulled them together from behind the scenes. They were pretty much the supernatural Avengers.

The uk coach has a one and done type of roster for his players...meaning he usually has a new line of freshman players up each season with a few exceptions.

The fact you think someone caring about the representation of others is being against his own gender is quite frightening to be honest. Personally I'm not so selfish, arrogant, entitled and fragile that I require Hollywood to make 75% of all characters be just like me to the detriment of women and people of colour. You were not judging the women the way you were judging Cumberbatch, at least be honest about that.

I think the word to describe movies with just women is "rare", actually. 85-90%% of Hollywood protagonists are men and 70% of all speaking roles go to men.

I think he mentioned sausage fest to describe that the movie business is dominated by men, not a single film.
For all of those mentioning McCarthy and her weight. She actually has lost a lot of weight for her role in Ghostbusters. 50 pounds. I don't think she's looking for that to be her main shtick for the film. Even in Spy her character was supposed to be an 'every woman' thing and not the fat lady. She also kicked a lot of ass. Hilarious film. Last edited by JangonateTK421; 01-12-2016 at 12:41 PM.. |

It's wrong to say, either way. And I don't know, there's lots and lots of female actors out there. There's maybe more men but in no way is it dominated by them.

In 2014, 85% of films had no female directors, 80% had no female writers, 33% had no female producers, 78% had no female editors and 92% had no female cinematographers, according to the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film at San Diego State University.
... The lack of women making hiring decisions leads to a less diverse workforce. Evidence suggests that women in positions of power are more likely to employ other women. On films with female directors, women comprised 52% of writers, 35% of editors and 26% of cinematographers. When men directed, the number of female writers shrank to 8%, editors fell to 15% and cinematographers dropped to 5%. The same is true for directing opportunities. Women comprised 20% of directors on projects where at least a third of the producers were female, but just 7% of directors when the representation of female producers fell below that percentage. Hollywood being male dominated is a fact.

Source. Couple that with the previously mentioned 85% plus of protagonists being male and 70% of speaking roles going to men.
Hollywood being male dominated is a fact.

There's still plenty of women in every movie, leading role or not. And is this inequality forced on women, or do more men pursue those careers? I really don't think there's some grand conspiracy to keep females out. It's not like we don't enjoy seeing them on the big screen.

"This" is objectively wrong.
Though this attitude is indicative of how far too many men seem to think, that a few women for eyecandy in front of the camera is more than enough for them so they don't see what the problem is, while our own gender gets massively over represented at every level.

![]() And I have to say, for all the bad seeds posting here, it's nothing compared to the Slave Leia thread. And I agree with most everyone criticizing McCarthy. She's a property that Hollywood has figured out is basically a lowest common denominator success story. The general masses love her, and Hollywood can't put her in enough. I don't get it, and I don't find her funny. It's almost like she's tapping into a sense of humor that hasn't been funny in twenty years. But different strokes I suppose, I just avoid her like the plague. Last edited by scarecrow; 01-14-2016 at 10:53 AM.. |

I'm not making fun of anybody's face, and I can't speak for anyone else but I don't think anyone else is either. There is a difference between judging someone's face as right for a part and making fun.

Sigh... I love the original Ghostbusters, I didn't mind the idea of an all-female team nor did I dislike the idea of having four comedians who could work off each other but this... this is just sad.
Why is there orange on the outfit? It throws off the aesthetic completely and as for the characters themselves, they just look like female versions of the characters I know just with a different name slapped on them. I don't like the direction this is heading in, I feel this movie is going to head in the direction that I once feared The Force Awakens to be heading in. It's going to shove the fact that we have an all-female team down my throat while simultaneously failing to develop each member into a likable character. Why couldn't Dan Aykroyd have just gone with the bright idea of cancelling this series and leaving us with the legacy to look back on or possibly do a Ghostbusters 3? Why is it that we're being left with what I feel to be pandering nonsense to the supposed "feminist" demographic? It's as that one guy said, we apparently live in a world where selling Slave Leia merchandise is not okay anymore and we can't get a good movie Scarlet Witch and yet suddenly we're going to be getting a movie that while it has potential, it's the whole idea that could possibly lead to this becoming pandering nonsense that cares more about being supposedly "progressive" than it does making a good movie? You know what was my favorite movie of this year? The Force Awakens and one of the many things I loved about the movie was how it didn't draw attention to the fact that there is a more diverse cast nor did it make everyone who isn't a female a joke. Han was still competent, Finn was very well-done and overall, it just felt more progressive without feeling like the supposed "feminist propaganda" that people claim it to be. To me, this has the potential of unfortunately becoming that and it's just sickening to me. I want to like this movie, I really do and when it comes out, I do hope that when I see it that it turns out to be a shockingly good time. I don't want another situation like female Thor where the character is so obnoxious in their pandering to this crowd that I want to vomit. |
