I think the idea was either that it's a grid like that for weapon storage or that there was more armor on the back but it broke off and what we see is the frame underneath. She's actually just wearing Anya's armor from Gears 3 and it looked pretty much the same then so it could just be designed that way. Funny enough though in the game when Kait puts the armor she comments that it feels like wearing a door.

I kept trying to play horde and it is fun but after wave 20 or 30 everyone would just bail and eventually I hit a wave I just couldn't beat on my own.
