Mcfarlane is light years behind pretty much everyone with their human face sculpts. These look really bad.

McFarlane likenesses are still better than anything Diamond and Super 7 have put out.

These look like they sculpted them based on the stuntmen

There is sculpt and painting.

Mcfarlane Toys on real human facing is lacking in sculpt and paint.
They have a rough shape down they MF doesn't go in and put more detail into the faces to really make them pop.

I don't if they have having problems with manufacturing, not enough time, or they simply need better face artists.

Then the faces have a bare minimum of paint. Flesh coat, eyes, and hair color.

Now at this price point I think you need to choose one if you don't have some specialized technology.

Hasbro has gotten around this with specialized technology and exaggeration(to their benefit and to making he face worse). 3D scanning the actors likeness(or maybe a bust) and their Photo Real technology.

Mcfarlane

Body sculpts they generally have down.

Articulation they need to work on(and it just needs tweaks, doesn't need to go revoltech).

Faces, they need to invest some infrastructure in. Either better artists or better technology. Or it's an area where a 3rd party can offer services.

It's like the Star Wars Black series a few years back...solid headsculpts with an archaic painting method, which made it seem like the likenesses were shitty. But once people started seeing customizers repainting those heads, it was apparent that the likeness were pretty spot on. I feel like that's what's going on here. Except for that unmasked Batman headsculpt, I don't think they were going for any kind of likeness on it.

That Superman headsculpt looks more Chris Pine than Cavill.

I can’t get past how much Steppenwolf looks like a box of staples. Not Todd’s fault, but I don’t care for that design at all.

On the up side, the material they used for Batman’s cape looks amazing.

Damn, what's happening with Amazon US? CA allows to preorder Batman, Cyborg and even Superman!

While Amazon CA has the preorders active, it's all still active. Either CA is getting a crazy amount(or demand is really low) or Amazon just messed up.

They put the listings up when they weren't supposed to. People made the preorders and instead of canceling it, Amazon US just closed others from creating more orders.

They still haven't been officially announced. It's all been leaks.

Really doubt they are just leaks. They all are available for pre-order on Amazon CA, even Superman that is #1 Best Seller right now and Darkseid, Steppenwolf and Aquaman were available for pre-order for almost 3 days. Flash was sold out before the third day.

Well, Disney has a way to make Cara Dune figures - just have McFarlane make them! They wouldn't look at all like Gina so they should be OK selling them.

These would have been awesome, top-notch figures... 20 years ago.

I just can't get in to the McFarlane line (or their other recent lines, really)- besides the issues with figures based on real people, they seem unwilling to make any figures from DC source material that is pre-year-2000, with a few very rare exceptions- yet they will go all-out on what will likely be a slightly-improved version of a poorly-received film. I'd buy figures like Teen Titans Cyborg and JLU Green Lantern if I thought they would ever give us full casts from those shows, which seems very unlikely; meanwhile, we get all of the Snyder League, plus Staplewolff, and regular and Starvin' Marvin versions of Darkseid from a single recent film. Heaven forbid we get, say, some nice Silver Age or Bronze Age comic versions of characters... Meanwhile, the Spin Master line is a lot of fun, for only $7.99 a figure.

People seem to have totally forgotten that they have done good likenesses before (Star Trek, Labryinth, some of the Stranger Things line) so maybe these were just a rush job. It sucks for them that this misstep is going to leave them with the rep of doing poor likenesses.

I don't know about top notch figures 20 years ago. These particular faces yes. The bodies not so much.
Also Mcfarlane not doing figures pre2000. Well yeah that was 20+ years ago. It makes sense that DC would want Mcfarlane to do something current. And if they are doing all the current stuff now, they will probably have to go back in time sooner then later.

It's silly to think they aren't going to capitalize on peoples minds now. Not every wave is going to be for every fan especially when some of those fans weren't around/active for those properties 20+ years ago.

Now back to the faces. Looking at the JS Green Lantern. Mcfarlane can clearly make good realistic looking faces. So this isn't an issue of technology. Mcfarlane has within their means to make better faces.

Superman/Cavill's eyes and the brows are off on the figure it seems and I will agree better paint application and finishing would make these even better, just how the hair on the head looks a bit blah.

There are limitations on the detail you can flesh out based on the scale of figure, the smaller the more difficult. I think going slightly larger than 6 inch 1/12 gives more room to nail face sculpts. I could probably go on more but to get to the point, McFarlane plays in the close to 1/10 slightly bigger scale should give more allowance to pick out and nail the specific details that make the face unique. It's going to be harder for actual real people versus from illustration comic book or animation, where there's usually less and more clear cut (sometimes exaggerated) features to hit.
I know with how technology is, it should be easier now, there's a ton of scanning and face recognition software that should be able to do provide accurate sculpts but guess we're not there yet.

Just makes me wonder even if the body is good (scultping looks good, but the articulation can be suspect at times with McFarlane toys) does anyone make an excellent custom head for this scaled body?

McFarlane figures already are 7 1/2 jobs (aka closer to 1/10th) so they should have better likenesses than this. And they HAVE. Their Game of Thrones and Harry Potter figures have excellent likenesses.

maybe it's just that they are pushing out SO many figures so quickly that they are just half-assing it, especially because they know they'll probably sell anyway even if they look nothing like the actors?

Would get these if both Bats and Supes had multi-purpose cloth capes instead of plastic ones. Cmon, McFarlane, NECA's beating you at this!

I agree on this, the reason why those GoT and Harry Potter figures had better likenesses was that there were only a few figures to work on unlike the DC Universe which has been churning out figures non-stop.

I also get the sense Snyderverse stuff was exactly not a priority for McFarlane.

Batman is too short, I mean Affleck is 6' 4" so I dont exactly think the other members would be exactly towering over him like this lol

After viewing the Facebook video of Mcfarlane showing off this wave.

Well it looks like these guys on Amazon are the ones we will be seeing for a minute.

Superman's face I think looked much better there under normal lightning. So with that figure I think it's more a case of a lack of paint detail that provides more contrast.

Aquaman, still isn't working out, but everyone else seems on point.
