Annnnnnd more Heisei repaints/variants. It's like Bandai and Toho won't acknowledge a Godzilla movie made before 1989 (barring a few exceptions)

The entire Showa series has remained basically untouched. What a shame.

What a fucking joke this line has become.

At this point I'll hope they reboot it under the Figuarts banner once the next anniversary hits, seems to work just fine for Ultraman.

That's because the Heisei designs look the beeeeeesssssst. Showa has its merits if you like goofy Godzilla movies, but most of the monster suits from that era look like straight up trash bags with googly eyes superglued onto them. Not exactly a replica I'd like on my shelf.

You are totally entitled to your opinion, I'm just arguing that an entire segment of these characters' histories are being totally ignored. Bandai never had a problem making Showa figure before. I'd hazard a guess that there is for sure a market for Showa based figures.

I'd also argue not every showa suit was a "trashbag with googly eyes"

Sure, if you want your monsters so fat they can't do anything but shoot laser beams at each other.

No, the Heisei movies were crap and the monster designs were horrible. The Showa designs might look like garbage bags at times, but at least the monsters could move around and the effects and miniature work wasn't halfass and lazily thrown together as if they did it the night before filming. Of course, we all know the figures themselves would look great.

Why couldn't they retool this Mothra into the Showa version? Or at the very least a GMK Mothra?

I haven't bought a MonsterArt since Gamera, so every time a new release is announced I keep hoping it is going to be something worth buying. I'm still trying to figure out why we have this stupid repaint before they release the 74 MechaG they showed off 6 months ago.

That's not saying much considering they only did three Showa figures in the past, all of them Godzillas, and one was a repaint.

Apparently not, that’s why they aren’t doing any.

But even if there isn’t enough of a fan following to get stuff like Titanosaurus or Hedorah out there, the original Mechagodzilla is beyond iconic, same with King Ghidorah.

I have no idea why those aren't a thing yet.

Because that would take too much effort.

I guess I should've been clearer. I was referring to back in the day with Bandai's Vinyl figures.

Well Vinyl figures are easier to produce and much cheaper, so I guess that explains it.

It's not that Showa monsters in general are the problem but rather Showa monsters in this hyper articulated line geared towards collectors I guess.

Am I a bad Gojira fan for never liking Mothra?? This fig is cool, but if we're talking about quasi mystical supporting monsters that get worshiped by island natives...King Caesar is my Kaiju...

I used to like Mothra but then I thought about it and changed my mind. From a spectacle/fight perspective Mothra was always underwhelming to me, most notably in group fights.

I lost faith in the Monsterarts line when my Ghidorah arrived and his heads and tail promptly fell off.

Ok, I feel better. My favs are the oddballs: King Caesar, Hedorah (Smog Monster), Gabara & Titanosaurus (I put them together because of their insane roars), Megalon, and Jet Jaguar (a character I'm surprised hasn't seen larger amounts of exposure and merchandising). Gigan also, but he has become so popular that he/she/it is almost a B rather than C, or D-lister now.

That's exactly how I feel, except, even as a kid, I felt Mothra was snooze material. Battra is a little better, but I think they went with a bit too much overkill in their efforts to make a "Mothra-type" threatening.

Mothra isn't my favorite by far, but I feel like I'm the only one excited by this release. I don't have a SHMA Mothra since they haven't released one in a long time, and I really feel that she's needed in any full collection. So I'm excited to get both larvae and moth mothra in one package. I'll be waiting for Bluefin and buying off Amazon.

I've liked all the recent SHMA releases I've gotten, the large '89 Godzilla w/ effects, '54, and the Mecha King Ghidorah and special color version of Ghidora. The latter is one of my favorite pieces in my collection. With the flight stand, it's just awesome to have this giant flying monster displayed.

Gigan is my favorite "you need to have seen the movies to know who this is" monster, and he was surprisingly in more than just the one movie too. I just dig the green and gold scheme with the buzz-saw chest and the T-1000 blade arms (except Gigan did it first!) and that Cylon-esque red eye. I wasn't a big fan of the redesign for Final Wars though but it wasn't awful.

Oh, Gigan is absolutely a favorite of mine. Is there a better Kaiju team-up partner? It's just that I've seen the redesign on so much merch (t-shirts, posters, etc) that he no longer feels "underground." I like the redesign, but prefer the original look. Like Battra, I think they overdid Gigan's new look.

I love both Gigan designs equally, but damn does he keep getting the shaft when it comes to the quality of the movies. Of course, he still has one more movie than King Ceasar does.

I'm gonna come out as a potential total Edge Lord and say that Battra was always way cooler than Mothra, especially on an aesthetic level.

Battra is the only thing that makes that 92 movie watchable.

Pretty much. In all fairness, I love the Hesei designs, but almost all of that series really sucks, exceptions being the '84 Return of Godzilla (my personal favorite Godzilla film) and Godzilla vs Biollante, which is so absurd and takes itself so seriously (when it has no right to) that it's an incredibly fun watch.

Gigan gets summoned to help Megalon fight Godzilla and Jet Jaguar, "what the hell did I just get roped into?"

Even in his own movie he had to get overshadowed by the fact the King Ghidorah showed up. When in your own title movie Godzilla's archenemy arrives you know you've been shafted. Having said that I do like the idea of Ghidorah and Gigan being a team and not just because they're both the alien monsters.

Eh, I wouldn't say he got overshadowed by Ghidorah when more than half of the footage with Ghidorah is just stock footage.

It's been a long time since I've seen the movie but I trust you on the stock footage part. Still I feel Gigan would have been more empowered in his debut if he had taken on Godzilla and Anguirus without help.
