I'm pretty much copying and pasting a text I just sent to a friend, lol :

Confession time, lol !
I feel as if I completely missed out on Gargoyles ! When it first aired, I was angry that I never got to watch it because of stupid soccer practice/games.
A few years later, when it re-aired (on the Disney Channel ?), I felt that I couldn't fully appreciate it because I was watching it for the first time as an older teen and not a child, so I didn't give it a fair chance.
Then about 10 years ago, a friend from a local comic book discussion club let me borrow the DVDs and Slave Labor Graphic's "Season 3" Comics. I enjoyed them, but wasn't blown away, since I didn't have that nostalgic connection.
I have a similar attitude towards Avatar: The Last Air Bender. I want to watch it, but I feel like I won't appreciate it as an adult, and that I probably would have been blown away by it had I first enjoyed it when I was younger.

Anyways, I've had it on my Disney Plus Watch List for months, and I think it's about time to give it another (4th ?) chance.

No it’s not 100% a new sculpt. Legs and arms are basically reuesd part, they rescale the arms a bit but still basically the same arm and leg sculpt from Batman Superman body. Just look it up

I’m frustrated they didn’t make a whole new sculpt. I take it for granted that whoever got the Gargoyles license will treat it like TMNT or Batman animated series don’t reusing old sculpts from other line at least not on the main characters. That implied they might only want to make 1 or 2 characters.

And I wonder was NECA really got the animated show license from Disney? or its actually the Gargoyles comic books. That make scene if you can’t have the likenesses of animated show why bother to make a whole new sculpt.

I think NECA’s the Gargoyles is the only toy product that base on The Disney Afternoon that doesn’t has the likenesses of the original style(Goliath has no abs), it’s more like a fan art version of the original. So what is going on here?

This line seems to be like Masters of the Universe classics. Based more on new adult collector wants rather than right off of the screen. I could see them doing a more simple cartoon design, but that won’t draw in the fans like these sculpts will. You can use these figures for any other 6 -8 inch line. These are what many have been waiting for.

Mattel, then super7 did finally release carton accurate masters of the universe figures. But if you look at the after market prices, it’s the classics figures that command high prices. Other than a few top spots, the animated he-man stuff does not go for as much ergo not as in demand.

That said I wouldn’t say no to cartoon accurate gargoyles, but I prefer these. These will go with what I collect. I see on many to forums and reading the comments on Neca’s social media, that collectors are buying this simply because it looks so cool and fits in with other lines or they just want a gargoyle figure.

Neca put out a statement the day these went up for preorder saying the response to Goliath was beyond what they expected and there are 5 more figures sculpted with more on the way. Some toy sites even sold out of preorders and had to secure more from Neca. I don’t ever rambler that with a neca figure before.

I did, they're clearly different sculpts. They just look similar because there's not whole lot of variety in sculpting heavily muscled limbs.

And FYI, you cannot "rescale" something and then call it "reused". If they alter the size it is literally a new mold. The terms reuse / repaint only applies to the same parts being painted differently.

What's the difference? The comics were licensed by Disney as well, it's their property.

Exactly. They did the same with their "Defenders of the Earth" figures. Cartoon accuracy is nice and all, but at the end of the day you're trying to replicate a 2D drawing that was constantly shifting in size, altered in color for lighting purposes or otherwise manipulated. You can base it on one frame and one frame alone.

Plus, with the lack of details you come dangerously close to delivering something visually boring or worse. And I don’t want to offend anybody who likes these but the "Back To The Future Toony Classics" figures from Neca already crossed that line IMO, they are rather hideous.

Did you watch the entire series or just the first season? Because it is the second season that made the show grandiose and you don't need nostalgia to enjoy such a well written story with amazing characters who could die at any moment because no one is invulnerable.

BTW, the versions they re-aired on the Disney Channel were edited. I'm not sure if Disney+ has the show uncut or not, and includes the episodes they can not broadcast on TV anymore, but the DVDs do and are uncut.

That's funny, Ive have those exact two images in Photoshop since this morning, I was going to do a side by side comparison when I got a chance but no need to now lol. Yeah, this is basically their "brute" version of the previous body, made by the same sculptor in the same style. So of course it's going to be similar but, nothing on this figure is re-used from previous releases. I could see this body being used for Street Sharks, if Neca were ever going to get that license.

And if they do, they'll get my money.

(I've got no nostalgic attachment to this particular property, so I'm firmly in the 'pass' camp. FOMO is in full-play, but I know that feeling will diminish over time. These figures are huge, and there's no way I'd have space for all 6 of them even if I tried. We're definitely in a period where there is just too much stuff coming out too quickly. I've got to pick and choose what I collect very carefully.)

FYI. It sounds like pre-orders are really limited for these. NECA is requiring all retailer pre-orders to be submitted by April 2nd.

My guess is they had a set number they planned to run for the first batch (hopefully not the only batch), likely based on where it can fit in on the factory schedule. If they’re close to hitting that number, they need to close off pre-orders so they don’t oversell the first run.

As pumped as I am for him. I think the horror stuff is still very niche. So many young people will look at him and just think “is that a young Ego?” Lol.

Gargoyles is getting that mid 90s generation. Plus gargoyles fit so many places.

Don’t get me wrong, “The Thing” will sell. But I doubt the way Goliath took off.

90s properties are really underrepresented in collectibles so hopefully this will show companies like Neca to pursuit more rather than rehash the same old 80s properties... gi joe is selling only because they disappeared for years, hasbro ghostbusters were pretty much doa, MOTU is rotting on the shelves, transformers always seems steady but they’re finally leaning into beast wars and those have been selling really well.

I’d love Street Sharks alongside Neca TMNT. I would die for a revamped/reissued Mighty Max from anyone. I wish Neca got Power Rangers instead of Super7. Super7 also dabbled in Nicktoons but they would fit well in what Neca is doing with toony stuff. Some retro cloth Are You Afraid of the Dark monsters like zerbo the clown or ghastly grinner would give me a heart attack. Ultimate Slappy from Goosebumps would kill.

The opportunity to rope in a whole new customer demographic is ripe for the taking

I'm not going to speak to Gargoyles. But I've always found this thinking weird. Sure, there is the nostalgia and rose-tinted child eyes when you're watching something. But if something is good, it's good.

I loved Batman TAS growing up. But I appreciate it even more watching it as an adult. I watched Avatar the first time as an adult. And it was awesome. I don't think I would have gotten the same appreciation watching it as a kid. I would have enjoyed it, sure. But I wouldn't have gotten the depth and emotional resonance of most of it.

I hope Goliath isn't going to be the only one for this line. He needs the whole team to be displayed with. I hope they're making Brooklyn, Broadway, Lexington, Hudson, Bronx, Demona, Angela, Elsa and Xanatos.

In all honesty, in 2011(-ish), when I was watching the DVDs that I had borrowed from a friend, by Season 2, the show had just become background noise for me. I hate to admit this, but I really didn't approach the series with an open mind, and just wasn't all that receptive to it whatsoever. Granted, at the time, I was diving deep into Star Trek Voyager, as well as re-visiting Star Trek: TNG for the first time in years, after finally picking up those series on DVD. I had also picked up the Blu-Rays of the Eccleston and Tennant eras of Doctor Who, and was excited to finally re-watch those seasons. Frankly, at the time, if it wasn't Star Trek or Doctor Who related, I had little interest in it, lol. Watching Gargoyles seemed like an obligation that I had committed to in order to placate a friend (as odd as that may sound). Oddly enough, I thought it was a cool and unexpected coincidence to find just how many cast members from TNG did voice work for Gargoyles.
Most importantly though, I've never been a huge cartoon fan, which I'll elaborate more on below ...

While growing up, I wasn't a huge cartoon fan, so as an adult, it's been hard to develop an interest, even in the really good stuff. As a kid, the only cartoons that I had any sort of serious interest in were the Marvel cartoons from the 90's, up to X-Men Evolution, as well as DC's Timm-verse stuff. I just preferred live-action sci-fi/genre shows, like Star Trek, The X-Files, Buffy, Babylon 5, etc. over most cartoons. Years later, I really enjoyed a few anime series (Trigun, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop), but I just can't muster up enough interest to re-watch them. I guess I just never developed an appreciation for animation.

The lore and world building in Avatar sound amazing, from what I've read, so I feel that my younger self would have eagerly latched on to that series, but the adult me just feels like I can find that sort of thing in more adult-oriented series. I'm sure that last sentence comes across as harsh when reading it, but it really isn't my intention to sound so snobbish and condescending, really, I swear, lol !

But anyways, if I had more free time, far fewer hobbies, and if there wasn't an absolute glut of TV series and movies available at the moment, I'd probably approach more animation with an open mind, because I'm sure there's a lot of great stuff that I'm missing out on .
