The new Mattel WWE Legends figures are now out at retail. I found the entire Wave 1 series at Toys R Us on Saturday, July 3. Apologies for the crappy picture quality; I only had my cell phone with me at the time. I only have pics of Hawk, Animal and Sgt. Slaughter but the whole wave was there, which also includes Dusty Rhodes, Stone Cold Steve Austin and Ricky Steamboat.
The figures looked absolutely great. Better sculpting and likeness than the Jakks figures. |

Mattel is getting better, but over all the Mattel WWE stuff has sucked pretty bad. I have been operating a small toy store for a long time now and wrestling figures and related items accounts for 50% of sales. I carry both Mattel and Jakks WWE figures and the Jakks made figures are still out selling the Mattel. Most of the kids do not like the new figures, mostly because a lot of them have terrible faces and sculpts. These later lines are improving but the sill have a ways to go. I sell 3 Jakks made figures to every 1 mattel figure. The TNA Jakks figures have been a hit. Finally got some of my order in from jakks and they sold out in the first day. I still have a large wait list for the next order of TNA stuff. I can't say that about the Mattel WWE. The interest is just not there. I still get collectors in all the time complaining that they hate the new stuff. If they continue to improve that may change though. Hope it does because its easier for me to order new Mattel figures then scrape together decent amounts of the Jakks made ones, but for now Craigslist and Ebay are my best friend for filling my customers demands for Jakks made WWE figures.

Consistency of scale and better overall sculpting/detail is on Mattel's side though IMHO. I think Mattel's figures would sell better if full articulation was standardized on all figures instead of just relegated exclusively to the Legends/Elites. The variety and scale, as well as distribution are quite good, especially compared to their other lines that I gave up on trying to find(like DCUC).

What is it about WWE figures that warrant them having a full aisle, literally, dedicated to them? Seriously, Marvel and GI Joe get a few columns of pegs, if that, and WWE has a whold friggin aisle! More than Star Wars!!! It's crazy.
Anyway, I completely agree with you Shin. I have bought some of the JAKKS figures, but the Classics line. I have absolutely zero interest in any of the current WWE roster. Don't care about any of them at all. This new Legends line appeals to me, for nostalgiac reasons, but at $15 a pop I don't think I'll be biting. That's why I dropped DCUC. Although distribution seems to be wwaaaaayyyyyyyyyy better on the WWE stuff than DCUC can ever hope to be. I guess Americans are fanatics for their wrastlin'. |
