Awesome room, OscarV! You did some great work in there. Looks stellar and so clean. I'm a huge fan of orderly collections of any sort. Wish I had the space to do something like that. So much nicer than having a bunch of figs all on top of each other, IMHO. Maybe once I sell off all this G.I.Joe stuff I've accumulated over the years I can do something like that. I've got tons of it and its gots ta go!

Getting up there in customs, Lord Mudd, keep it up! I'm nearing 200 myself. 200 posted anyway, no idea how many I have including the ones I made prior to posting on here actively. Huh, 200 customs in less than a year...hadn't actually thought about it before but I make a lot of these guys. I also had to look up Lei Kung also as I had no clue who that character was. Led me to find a whole slew of other characters that I now want to make. It never ends but that's part of the fun (for me anyway). One of the Marvel Handbooks (that was a few years old at that time) said that Marvel's character library was at 100,000 individual characters. Yes, you're reading that number right. No way I'll ever make everyone, but I'm going to try to put one hell of a dent in that number.

Speaking of customs I got some new tools for the hobby that now allow me to get all the problem areas of paint rubbing without having to completely disassemble a figure (ala Creator's pics) and without having to mess with my cutting knife so much. So now I'm a happy camper since I hate taking figures apart completely with a passion. It's not difficult, I just don't like doing it. lol

Nice Surtur, Creator. And nice Dragon you did a while back too.I'm not a fan of paint washes myself, but yours aren't too heavy so that's a plus. The dragon is very well done! Liking that one a lot.

Nice Kingpin, Nut, but I'm all about articulation. Even though I don't pose my stuff, they've gotta be able to move. That's a good stand in though.

Not surprising. They're generally overpriced as well as under represented in terms of physical locations. And their online presence is a travesty. They should go online only with a total revamp...something akin to BigBadToyStore is the model they should have gone to years ago, but too many corporations in this country still operate like it's the early 90's and they're fading like relics while places like Amazon and like continue to push forward and innovate. Oh well, such is life...

I choose my figures based on what I see, if this figure looks like that character, I do it. I never try to force a figure. That said, this is only my MU. I have DCIH, Trek, Buck Rogers, etc, so I don't have an accurate count, but my GLC is over 40 by itself. Someday I hope to get a full count, not including the 100+ Secret Wars figures I did 30 years ago.

I doubt there will be any Marvel or Star Wars news at all. HasCon is mostly for them to promote their own stuff.

They aren't always overpriced here. Another problem like Walmart they sell online space to competitors.
It is funny that they keep blaming Amazon.com for brick and mortar retail woes when it is their own fault for not having stuff in stock etc.

One question for customizers - how do you avoid damaging new paint when reassembling newly painted figures? From my experience sometimes you need to exert quite a force to snap the pieces together.

my idea of an ideal Kingpin would be fully articulated with as joints as close to seemlessness as possible. black would also work better to mask overall seem lines. let thy evolution begin!

Erm, I don't bother. I put the figures in the best possible pose I can think of and paint away. Or just send Pilk some reference pictures and it magically gets done for me

Think you would just have to re-apply the paint you damage during the assembling process

The colored plastic that you would find with a pair of 3-D glasses. Place those into the clear circles on Galactus head. Yellow, Red, Green, Blue, our choice right. Don't have a ton of time so will make this quick for now and can expand later...

The main joint rub areas are shoulders, torso split, hip/upper thigh, elbows and knees. Using a mix of a VERY sharp exacto knife and a Dremel tool you can mod each of these points to eliminate the rubbing spots without damaging the figure or making the joints loose to the point of uselessness. If you guys really want to know I'll have to do a write up that I don't have time for right now, but a knife and Dremel is the way to go. Still takes some time depending on what you're trying to do, but saves way more time in the long run.

You'll need to get the following Dremel accessories at the minimum:

Sanding drums (small ones are fine, the figures aren't that big), engraving bit (looks like a little ball on a metal pin), grinding stones (these are the MOST useful ones for joint work without disassembling the figure and it's a vital piece for the hip area which causes me the most headaches for paint rub - will show you on the next posted batch the end results of using that). There might be one more I'm forgetting off the top of my head, will update later if I think of it.

One thing to keep in mind, you do need to have a steady hand and don't be afraid to make mistakes. Practice and in time it becomes second hand nature. A lot of my customs are just trial and error seeing what works and what doesn't based on whatever batshit crazy idea pops into my head to attempt.

As for putting them back together without damaging the paint, it's very hard to do and a royal PITA especially with the overly small joint pins for this scale. Best advice I can give is to just do your base coats on figures that are taken apart, use some kind of superglue type product to preserve key areas. (I use one that turns into a plastic shell when it dries in addition to it being a glue. I mainly just use it for nick repairs and around the knee, bicep and hip joints. I think it's supposed to be for fingernail repairs based on what the bottle says.) Then do any detail/design work when you put the figure back together. Even then, you can damage the pins and if you put a piece in backwards it's a ridiculous task to re-take it apart and fix that. Big reason why I don't do complete disassembly anymore. I've put knees in upside down, female lower knee joints put on backwards... lol all kinds of stupid things.

I use microwaved water to take figs apart (I'm not boiling a damn thing) 4 minutes on high then soak the figs for a minute, they come right apart and a hair drier to put them back together - hair drier is to soften the joints without screwing up your paint work. You can use a heat gun, but unless you have a need to own one and are damn sure you won't burn up your figures, just get a cheap hair drier.

I generally only take off the head, the arms at the bicep swivel, the lower leg at the calf swivel, and the upper legs at the hip joint. I only take off the hands and/or feet if the costume design calls for different paint in those areas. When it doesn't I will paint them separately though to keep paint from clogging up the joint i.e. painting the hand up to the joint swivel then painting from the joint up the forearm.

Ok, that was longer than intended. In lieu of an actual tutorial I hope that helps a little. Gotta run...

Saw this and had to comment. Whatever works with what you want to create, go for it! For me, I do the exact opposite. I find a character I want to make and then I go out and gather whatever parts and pieces I need to make the design. I also have no problem cutting up figures and creating from scratch, but I know not everyone can or wants to do that.

I've always been an artistic person, so for me the challenge of making something unique is where my personal satisfaction comes in with this hobby. That and I'm a big Marvel fan and would have killed to have a line of these figures as a kid. I butchered a lot of Joes back in the day trying to make them into Marvel superheroes.

Greetings guys. I agree with you both. I will butcher something up, and in the end it's 90% what I was going for. EXAMPLE #1, my 1st series HULK, with added waist articulation, ankle swivel, and leg extensions. NOT my complete idea, same with red hulk. Next up is my W.I.P. SPIRAL, major arm butcher, all arms work though! Tell me what you guys think, and articulation rules. Almost 500 figures fellas....KEEP CREATING FRIENDS!!!!!
