Star Wars is probably the backbone of collecting, it predates what we think of GIJoe (the 3.75" characters) by half a decade. Toyark has a sister site called Hisstank that's dedicated to Joes and that's most likely why the Joe discussion here is less apparent, just like we don't really have any Transformer threads because TFW2005 exists.

I know that the only use I ever had for Joes was to put their heads on ERTL Trek figures to make "redshirts" for Kirk and company to take on away missions.

The GI Joe figures of 1964 were the dolls that were just generic army soldiers of varying types, not the Joes and Cobras that everyone really knows or collects. Few people actually collect those GI Joe dolls compared to the 3.75" line which didn't kick off until 1982. From the original 1964 line GI Joe didn't have any characters or story it was just dolls of a soldier, marine, sailor, etc. They weren't really a toy line that urged completion or collection since there were only 4 or so and and it was basically the same doll 4 times with different clothes. That's when the collectible GI Joe world really started, that's where you have all the cool vehicles, play-sets, and the legion of figures that everyone remembers and collects with fondness. Sadly though for the GI Joe community it hasn't had the enduring popularity of a other franchises and there hasn't really been a dedicated GI Joe line of figures for some time now, this is a big part of the reason why I can't consider GI Joe the backbone of action figure collecting.

To bring this thread back on topic: it's also because of the original Star Wars toy line and the 1982 GI Joe series that the scale became popular enough for Hasbro to have ever made the awesome Marvel Universe line.

yeah but Star wars didnt start their CARTOON until 2 yrs after GI Joe. Gi joe was more kid friendly versus star wars complex story line. gi joe was more popular at that time (toy wise)

wrong again. they made figures based on the hollywood movies, they even made them better (comes with 2 heads etc) its been around since 1964, action figures, cartoons, clothing and Hollywood movies and you dont "consider" them? you have lost credibility with me.

Hisstank was great before GI Joe died.
Now I basically use the site for discussion of customs, Boss Fight, Marauders and other military lines like True Heroes and The Corps.

I agree that Compatibility thread is best place for 4" Joe and SW discussion, or take in-depth topics to HissTank.

Kenner Star Wars was petering out when ARAH made it big. I had both but Joe made more of an impression on me. That's why I wish MU would make a comeback and handled as a vehicle/playset line like ARAH.

since this forum has become more or less a venue for showcasing customs more and more lately, i see no reason not to include topics for discussion about other lines in this scale, are we to be so picky,if so, just start a forum for customs, now granted, we arent getting much new product to satisfy our collecting needs but let us not forget were it was that we came from, and we did come from the early 60's gi joes, they even coined the term "action figure" because only girls played with dolls, they were the first, simple as that. no other toy line has been as successful as the joe line, having reinventing itself over and over through the years. the number of figures and vehicles and acc. that were available are mind boggling, and we as marvel universe collectors can only dream of getting made for us

Love the aggressive debating about “which came first” topics, so here’s my two cents:

Star Wars started the 3.75” craze. That’s why I’ve always said that when Star Wars went away from their 3.75” line it was disastrous for us. GI Joe came later, yes but bolstered the 3.75” ranks with the inclusion of a TV show to “sell toys”. Going back to the 1965 line of GI Joes, and saying they were the OGs of our scale? Come on, man. So where do Istand on this debate?
1965 joes weren’t 3.75” but if you wanna yell about ‘em to the crickets, don’t get mad at us. (Unless you’re using the 1965 bucks to make giant man.)

Fisher Price, a division of Mattel, made the first 3.75 inch figures. Mego made the first 3.75 inch super heroes and established the scale. They passed on Star Wars to do Star Trek, which would have been bigger had they committed the way Kenner did to Star Wars. Mego also distributed the Micronauts, a renamed toy line from Japan, which may predate Fisher Price, I don't know anything about timelines on Japanese toys in Japan.

As for the inundation of custom photos, this IS an appreciation thread and I feel it shows our appreciation for what we collect.

Guys I know you know, but GI JOE is MARVEL. At least talking about 82' and on. But in 4" regards. I just purchased the Toy Biz Marvel Training Center and it displays real nice with 4" figures.
Bright colors make it super toy looking compared to the Doom Castle from the Secret Wars set.

I incorporated all these in the following recipe. Arms from a Redakai figure, Fireblast from Iron man. Easy yet fun!

This is true, but it's also true that if it wasn't for Ken that decided to enlist (the original GI Joe), action figure lines in general wouldn't exist. Action figure lines all share the same barbie ancestor.

Which then yup, Star Wars and then later ARAH gave way to the 1:18th scale figure market. And the rest is history. (Though tbh, the true advancements in 1:18th scale engineering didn't start happening until the last 12 years. Some of which is thanks to MU itself too with their new ankle types that started getting used by GI Joe too. And it can be argued that GI Joe Retaliation with the new wrist articulation further evolved that, but hasn't been used since.)

But if you do care about toy history, to be honest all action figures are dolls of varying sizes. If it wasn't for "enlisted Ken". The "boys market" would have stayed with role play stuff.

Barbie is the backbone of our toy history. Which is funny to think about considering modern male mentalities, and the last 20 years of toy manufacturer mentalities on action figure lines. Without the Ken doll, GI Joe would have never existed, which wouldn't have led to all the other varying experimentation of the market that led to both Star Wars figures, and ARAH figures, that eventually evolved into the modern figures we all collect today.
