great find on Binary. I wonder if our Walgreens actually carried Legends anymore if any would ring up the same.

(not saying I'm wanting a Binary. I'm good with not having one)

I forgot to post this yesterday, but I stopped by a couple of Targets that had full cases of Vulcan out on the pegs.

I'm also starting to see Ragnarok on Target shelves while many Walmarts and Targets in my area have gotten a refresh of the Korg BAF wave.

Oh, and I also picked up America Chavez on clearance at Target for $6.89.

I've been to a few Targets this weekend and all they have had are Thor figures.

One Target had 12 Gorrs, 1 Starlord, 6 jacket Thors, and 8 armored Thors, another had 2 Groots.

Oh man, I’d love Triathlon/ 3-D Man. Particularly in light of Perez’s passing, I could go for a wave dedicated to characters & designs of his. It would be the perfect place to finally give us Beast & Wonder-Man.

That's a wonderful idea and would be much preferred over some of Hasbro's other larks. (*cough* XTAS *cough*)

I think loosely themed “creator waves” would do well. Themed around people like Perez, Adams, Kirby, or even Byrne, they’d be an easy way to give us a mix of iconic A-lister, oft-requested B-lister, and left field D-lister characters.

I started reading the first X-Men Omnibus and have gotten through issues 1-3. This series has definitely started out a bit rough and is quite slow moving, especially the third issue that featured the Blob, which was kind of boring. There's also been some questionable moments like the X-Men telling Blob he can not reject joing their team because he knows there identity, Professor X wiping his memory due to that, and also the creepy "the woman I love" statement he made about Jean.

Still, it is cool to read the beginnings of this franchise knowing where it went later on.

This was so uncomfortable that it went unaddressed for years until it was finally called back to in Onslaught as an example of Xavier's dark side.

Silver age X-Men is frigging rough. When I started reading comics, I thought I didn’t like the X-Men because I started from the beginning of the run. Skipped forward to Giant Size/ X-Men 94# and fell in love. Now I’m campaigning for a Stevie Hunter action figure.

Edit: feel the need to point out that there are bright spots, namely the Arnold Drake run and the Steranko/ Adams era of art.

Same here. I know a large part of that is simple nostalgia, as that was when I was most active as a reader, but Lee and the Kuberts will always be my favorites.

On edit: not the Outback era specifically, but Lee's time with X-men as a whole

I’m really partial to that era, I think it was when Claremont’s storytelling powers were at their peak. And that’s really saying something. Every issue just did so much to immerse me in the world and the characters… his X-Men overall is a contender for my favorite comic run of all time. I know, basic pick, but… damn. Reread a rando issue (194#) last week for the first time time since high school and was blown away by how well it holds up.

Claremont was the bomb! I love his work and have had the pleasure of meeting him. His writing carried me through the 70's and 80's with much love for his stories and characters. I love Byrnes art as well as Smith & Lee.

Oh, the Claremont run of X-Men is hands down the greatest comic book run I have ever read, but it is nice to see where the series spawned from as I plan to read (or reread in some instances) everything in order all of the way through Claremont's era.

Claremont certainly was the engine that made X-men go, for me, however, the three artists I mentioned captured the look and feel of the 80's-into-90's in such manner that transformed the medium into a uniquely powerful storytelling device. Marvel's mutants faithfully embodied the times in their civilian dress and there were even contemporaneous highlights woven into their super hero looks that made the X-men stand out against a tapestry of more anachronistic heroes like the Avengers. Essentially, the heroes looked like musicians/celebs of the period being both influenced by the zeitgeist and simultaneously affecting it in their own right. I know that was why it spoke to me so clearly; they were in concert with other elements of pop culture I was consuming. I remember reading an article at the time about how artists like JRJR and Larry Stroman were introducing high-end contemporary fashion and urban cultural stylings into their illustrations and how those images were in turn finding their way to runways from NYC to Paris. I'd add Byrne as well, but his X-men run was just prior to my becoming a reader. However, his Alpha Flight run was right there at the height of my consumption.

Ah! Another Alpha Flight fan. I argue regularly (in good fun of course) with the owner of my LCS about how much Byrne’s Alpha Flight rules.

You make a really interesting point about how the X-Men felt like part of the zeitgeist of their era… although not something I noticed consciously, I think that definitely contributed to my enjoyment of them. Along with Spidey, it made them feel more real, more relatable. I could put on an album that I loved while I was reading and say “yeah, the X-Men would like David Byrne.” Which is, I think, what all Marvel’s best heroes are: real people that feel totally alive. Part of my earlier joke about Stevie Hunter comes from my love of secondary/ non-powered characters, because the focus on them is what, to me, really elevates a great run of comics. Thanks for drawing such eloquent attention to that, it’ll give me a new perspective to consider when rereading.

I’ve also had the pleasure of meeting Claremont, Star Lord … such a great guy. So gracious and pleasant.

Totally get your point about reading the roots, Kain! Personally, I find the X-Men’s roots disappointing when compared to something like Spider-Man, whose silver age title hit the ground positively running (or swinging, as it were).

… anyhow, enough pensive soliloquies. I’m starting to feel like I’m *in* a Claremont comic!

Edit: gah, my other Pulse order has been stuck in Georgia for a week and I’m getting antsy.
