If ToyBiz never died and had been doing Legends for the now 15 years the line has been going, you can bet they would have fallen into this problem of repeats and repaints.
Even if Hasbro's been running the line for 11 years, there's absolutely no reason for them to repackage the same exact figure multiple times within the span of a year other than being plain lazy. Ultimate Spider-Man JUST came out last year and there's likely still stores in the U.S. that haven't moved out the old Spider-Man waves to make room for the wave that he was in, not to mention this version comes with even less accessories. Releasing multiple versions of a character over a couple of years is one thing. Releasing the same character 3 times within the same year like they've been doing with Star-Lord, Spider-Man, Captain America, Iron-Man, etc., is absolutely ridiculous.

And as others have mentioned, yeah sure, we can simply not buy it, but when you're locking a BAF of a popular character behind a wave full of redoes and repaints of the SAME character or when you're packaging fan-requested characters in a $40 pack that includes a re-release of a figure you already have several times over, the complaints are perfectly valid.

And it's frustrating because they still have so much ground to cover with the Legends line, and they're wasting time on figures we already have. I honest to God thought it was dumb as hell that they'd sell us a Star Lord figure as part of the new Guardians wave, only to tell us maybe a couple of weeks later that they're selling the same Star Lord figure, except this time he comes with a brand new character in a web-exclusive 2-pk for 40 dollars.

Seven points of difference to avoid copyright infringement, so no they couldn't be identical, but hipster style cosutmes are hipster style. Also no one needs a 3rd Jessica Drew, the Thanos wave Jessica is pretty definitive. Unless the new one is going to be preggers, they can use the spider woman spot for a new character.
Like I said, that is a ridiculously low bar to call something derivative, especially when her first costume is even more derivative as it's literally the same as every other spandex bodysuit bar the colour scheme.
I left out the fanart because it's not relevant. I'm not saying we need another Jessica Drew figure (I wouldn't complain either) I'm saying it's ridiculous to say her new costume is a rip off of Batgirl of Burnside. By that logic every male character wearing a suit is ripping off whatever character you want to point too. Wolverines' outfit is a rip off of Supermans' because they both consist primarily of a spandex bodysuit.

Hasbro have said retailers won't buy waves without the big name characters being in them.

And the only big names they know are Captain America, Spider-Man, Ironman, and Wolverine. Never mind the fact that everyone knows who Gambit is, and Hasbro hasn't even attempted at the character yet.

I'm pretty sure that the average person who's not a comic book fan doesn't know who Gambit is. Remember, these are toys being sold at mass retail, and a huge portion of the audience for Legends is still kids. Considering there hasn't been an X-Men cartoon on the air in over 8 years, and he hasn't appeared in a movie in the same amount of time, I wouldn't expect the majority of kids or parents to have heard about him, unless they've been keeping up with the news of the in-development Gambit movie, which the majority of them probably haven't.

I'm by no means saying that we're never getting a Gambit (we'll almost certainly get him eventually), I'm just saying he's not going to be headlining a wave anytime soon. Same with other characters. Unless they're Iron Man, Captain America, Spider-Man or Wolverine, or they're someone else who's a main character in a big movie, they're not going to be headlining a wave. They can be in one, but no way they're going to be headlining one.

I have a ton of figures I really didn't want just because I wanted the BAF. There will always be shit figures that fill in a BAF line, especially with the way Hasbro cranks out these BAFs. It doesn't seem like ToyBiz ever really had that big of a problem with repeats and repaints.

I will say, I can't justify buying another Hasbro version of Spider-Man. I might have to start getting into customizing if I have to buy another. It seems like I have 40 right now.
Like I said...the only reason I haven't resorted to part swaps and returns is because of my own integrity. Plus, at the core of it all, I'm a father, and I can't stand the idea that in the end, by doing such a thing, I'm not only cheating other collectors, but I'm also cheating children whose parents might be picking up this figure for them, not knowing the difference from one BAF piece to another.

Toybiz was guilty of retreads left and right. They just didn't call them Spider-UK or Spider-Punk then like they do now. They called them "Power Gliding", "Off-Roading" or "Salad Tossing" Spider-Man, and they often came with goofy gimmicks or accessories that were twice the size of the figure itself...

And yes...I know that Spider-UK and "Spider-Bitch" are actual characters, but they might as well be "Feces Flinging Spider-Man" at this point, because having so damn many of them is ridiculous. I mean, did we really need to have Mary Jane to be released in a two pack with ANOTHER Pizza Spidey, only this one having that horrible glowing green spider on his chest? Hasbro is just milking us dry for the extra cash at this point...

I'm only a completionist in NECA's Aliens and Predator lines. Outside of a few unnecessary variants (open mouthed or closed mouth for example,) I have just about every variation of the two creatures that NECA has ever put out. I've become a completionist of sorts though as of late with Legends though however, thanks to the excellent run of BAFs that have been put out by Hasbro as of these last two years.

Not always the case, and in many of those cases, it's not worth the cost. A recent example I had was with the MCU Mordo and Spectral Dr. Strange. I ended up actually having to buy those two figures simply because there was never more than one or two listed, and there was no way in hell I was paying someone 20 dollars or more for a single BAF piece that I could end up finding cheaper in-store with the figure. With Mordo, it was especially stupid, as some people were being really scalper with the BAF parts, resorting to breaking up all three pieces of the Dormammu BAF pieces (remember, he came with a leg and two glowing skulls) into separate auctions.

Most of those spiderman figures from toybiz were not Legends figures, but rather the less articulated and sometimes smaller spiderman line figures. If you look at their legends catelog, they did a much better job of giving new characters or new molds for repeat characters.

Superman's most recent suit looks to be neoprene and 99% of Marvel characters wear suits made from unstable molecules. It's ridiculous to cite fabric choices, when the overall argument is about style and design, both of which Jessica and Barbara's current costumes share.

Very well, replace every instance of spandex with "skin tight" and the point remains the same. If you're going to claim that two characters wearing padded jackets (of different styles) and trousers is enough for one to be a rip off, then the bar is set so low that virtually ever other superhero costume ever is going to be derivative of something. Which renders the issue completely pointless in my opinion. Phil Coulson and the Purple Man both wear suits, derivative. Black Panther and Hellcat both have skintight cat themed bodysuits, rip off, etc. etc.

I think this discussion has run its course.

I'm loathe to even enter this discussion but per the artist, he designed it before Batgirl of Burnside debuted.

This is also one of those situations where people complain about the A-listers getting too much representation while those characters unfortunately outsell lower tier characters by a very wide margin. We had people flabbergasted that Wolverine turned out to be one of the biggest sellers from the Juggernaut wave because if you're just going off the toy message boards, people are sick of Wolverine because he's been so overexposed. And yet his toy sold like hot cakes.

I remember reading an interview with the heads of Hot Toys and someone asked why they keep making multiple versions of Iron Man while other characters only have one figure or haven't gotten one made at all, and the rep just shrugged and said bluntly it's because Iron Man makes way more money than many of those characters.

As much as I'm an X-Man fan, that's simply not true. Wolverine and Deadpool are recognizable by the general public now. Magneto, Cyclops and Storm have high recognition outside of just comic fans and have bled into some of the public awareness, as well as most of comic fandom, and Jean Grey and Professor X may have a little bit of general recognition, and moderate awareness in the comic audience. Beyond that, nope. Nobody really knows their names or can recognize them on sight.

That's not taking into account readers of X-men of course, I'm just talking your average Joe, and moderate readers of comics either DC or Marvel. If you're an X-Man fan or read Marvel comics heavily that knowledge will of course change.

and FWIW, we will almost certainly get Gambit at some point, unless the contract goes under. He, Nightcrawler, Storm, Pyslocke, Beast, Bishop, and Angel are practically locks at being done. Some of the higher profile villains too and likely some of the New Mutants given there's a movie out next year. Beyond that, not so much.

I'm aware of that. ToyBiz had several offshoot lines from Legends such as Spider-Man and Xmen Classics. I was being facetious...but it didn't change the fact that ToyBiz BOMBARDED us with Spider-Man figures in an unnecessary fashion for a while.

Sure, but those characters also weren't part of a build a figure line. You could simply just pick up whatever characters you wanted to without worrying about needing the others to complete something.

As far as the leaked list for upcoming Legends are concerned, I understand why they are releasing another Captain America and Iron Man(The two main staples of the MCU). I do however wish they would give us a different sculpted Captain America with more height and beef. For the most part costumes change every movie...to sell merchandise. Sure it makes sense in the context of the stories they're telling, but they are trying to sell more merchandise.

All this is subjective of course, but I've never found a reason to complain. There are lots of figures that I and everyone else want, but I've learned to be patient and eventually get what I want(Rogue, Cyclops, Deadpool, Miles Morales, Hobgoblin, Green Goblin, Sunfire, Wolverine, Ms. Marvel, Green Goblin, Sandman just to name a few.) If I end up with an extra Ultimate Spider-Man, it will go right to my son or nephews. Hasbro are releasing A LOT of figures to try and give us want we want. Hang in there and they may be on their way.

To be fair, the last Wolverine we got before Juggernaut wave Wolverine was back in 2013, in that Toys R Us Exclusive Jubilee Wave that almost nobody could actually find at retail. It also helps that this recent Wolverine is probably the best damn Wolverine body-wise that we've ever received in Legends. So I wouldn't put him near the level of Cap/Spider-Man/Iron-Man whom we receive at least multiple figures of every single year. So yeah, Wolverine was a case where we groaned about the prospect of getting another Wolverine, but it was in a classic look and it easily topped all previous versions of the character. Hasbro's not doing that with the Big 3. I'd love to get a classic Iron-Man that's better than any figure we've had of the character before it, but that's not what Hasbro's doing. They just keep churning out mediocre Iron-Man after mediocre Iron-Man on outdated molds and with bottom of the barrel costumes.

And yeah, I'm aware that kids like Legends and it DOES say Ages 4+ on the box, but we all know it's a collector's line, or at least right on that fine line. It's $20 a piece per figure. That's a collector-priced figure. Just to compare, Marvel Selects are around that price give or take, and most NECA stuff is only like 5 dollars more than that. Moms aren't paying $20 per figure for their kid. That's why we've got Hero Mashers and Titan Heroes and all of the other weird gimmick lines that Hasbro does.

Every time someone mentions that X-Men wave, I break just a little inside. The only figure I ever found at TRU was Wolverine. Cyclops and Strafe I found at my local comic store...which is now closed.

I was unfortunate enough to get back into collecting Marvel Legends right after that wave released

It sucks because Storm is my favorite X-Man and that's the best figure of her "available" (and I use that term loosely).

I have to echo that. She is beautiful. So beautiful, she is over $250 on Amazon. Why must they do this to us? My favorite Character is the Black Panther, and I don't even own a Storm. How in the world does that work? LOL!!!

Yeah, I know they didn't come with BAF pieces. I wasn't talking about build a figure lines with ToyBiz. The only thing that I was mentioning involving ToyBiz was that they bombarded us with Spider-Man (and to a lesser extent, Wolverine figures.)

And Iron Man figures...we had what 4-5 Iron Man figures during the Toy Biz days. Captain America at least had less, only two I think?

It depends on the kid. My parents taught me to take care of my toys and made it clear that they would never rebuy a toy that I broke. So when I started moving away from 5POA action figures to Transformers, they didn't have a problem with it because they knew I would take care of my toys. And it was the same way for my best friend down the street. We both had really great toys and liked playing at each others houses. But the kid who lived across the street from me was different. He treated his toys like crap so his parents only bought him used toys. Little prick even broke one of my friends toys by stomping on it for no reason.
