Eh, I don't know, I'd say it's a little more complex than that.

(NOTE: I'm not necessarily ranking all these sections equally or trying to give a "which one was overall better", I just split these up because I felt there were more criteria to judge the two companies' product on.)

Sculpted detail: Hasbro ~= ToyBiz

In terms of, like, the amount of sculpted detail, I'd say they were roughly equal.

Face sculpt: Hasbro > ToyBiz (barely)

ToyBiz put out a lot of good faces, but they also put out some bad ones, namely with their female figures. Really the only thing breaking the tie and giving Hasbro the edge is the female figures' faces.

Anatomy: Hasbro >>> ToyBiz

ToyBiz's figures almost always had weird proportions (even for the time), whether it be skinny limbs or protruding shoulder joints. Hasbro's figures are consistently shaped more like real human beings.

Poseability/Articulation: Hasbro > ToyBiz

Not only do I feel that Hasbro's articulation is often better implemented, both in terms of range of motion and sculpt, but also, Hasbro never loaded their figures up with extra articulation points that were either arguably not very useful (finger articulation, implemented in a way so that they could never make fists, and often couldn't hold things), or objectively redundant (second mid-bicep and mid-thigh swivels) like ToyBiz did on occasion.

Amount of paint detail: Hasbro < ToyBiz

ToyBiz generally put more paint apps on their figures, and did so with more detail.

Paint aesthetic: Hasbro <subjective> ToyBiz

This one, I feel is largely subjective. ToyBiz often had more paint detail, but sometimes it could end up being excessive and overcomplicate the look of the figure, of make it look dirty when it's not necessarily supposed to. Hasbro generally keeps it cleaner and a bit simpler, which often provides for a look more striking and closer to the source material, but can leave some figures looking underdetailed. In the end, for this category, it's more about what aesthetic you like more, and which one's problems you find easier to put up with.

Quality control: too complicated to judge?

I don't think you can easily judge which company has better quality control. It's almost better to compare a wave-by-wave basis than just comparing the two companies.

BAFs: Hasbro < ToyBiz

While by no means do I think most of Hasbro's BAFs are bad, in general, ToyBiz's BAFs were bigger, and somewhat more articulated (plus the character selection was a bit better, at least in terms of what character you'd want/need as a BAF).

I just think its funny how Hasbro wants $50 for their 12 inch figures and you will see DCs 12 inch figures at $30 retail just down the isle.

When comparing Toybiz Legends to Hasbro Legends you should compare retail availability too IMO. Like as hard as finding Deadpool or Angela is now... wasn't it like five times worse back in the Toybiz days? Like their are horror stories of trying to hunt down all the variants and stuff.

From personal experience? Hulk, spiderman and fantastic four classics were hard to locate, but legends where easy enough to find, its when they switched to hasbro thats when things became a pain in the ass, never seen holocaust brood queen or red hulk waves at retail.

edit
or the fin fang foom wave, got that shipped in from america.

I don't really remember having issues finding Legends until Hasbro took over. The only Toybiz line I had issues with was the Giant Man BAF that was a Wal-Mart exclusive. Hasbro I've had issues finding the Ronan wave, Jubilee wave, 2 packs, figures from Ares wave, nemesis wave, and figures from Rocket BAF wave

If we're comparing Hasbro to Toybiz, then Hasbro all of the way. I love my Surfer and Magneto, but the toys kind of suck. They have Sideshow Bob feet, Magneto's got gorilla arms and is wearing oven mittens, Surfer's head is too round, the joints have no ratchets in them so they are slightly loose, and the proportions look bad. They will do until Hasbro makes better versions.

Personally love the articulation of Toybiz much better than Hasbro, but I also know that same ability to have that articulation lead to strange proportions. I think what I miss most is the hand/finger articulation.

There is no contest to me that Toybiz's biggest advantage over Hasbro is their BAF. I don't have MODAK or Galactus, and I"m lacking one part of Mojo, but every other BAF was a must have. There is no comparison to Toybiz vs. Marvel's best or even Toybiz's vs Marvel's worst BAF. Toybiz wins every time.

My biggest issue with Toybiz is the paint...wash? I am not sure if that's the correct usage of the term. The Toybiz figures have a more dull flat painted look vs. Hasbro's being much vibrant and shiny. It's not as apparent in some figures as others. For the most part I'm glad i have my toybiz figures but they'll be replaced by Hasbro figures once they are released, with a few exceptions: Colossus is one that readily comes to mind.

Sculpts I'd actually say it's about even except for the female faces. Toybiz just couldn't get that right, for the most part. They did really good job with Phoenix but I can't think of another one that looks fantastic. And some of them are just awful: Scarlet Witch and Rogue being the "winners" here.

I thnk though it's fair to add that Hasbro really had a problem when they first took up the license. That first year of Hasbro figures (their first three waves, especially that first wave) were pretty lousy. Not as far as character selection, minus the Ultimate and movie figures, the main universe selection was great. But most of those figures need to be redone or have been already, for good reason. In fact I'd say that those waves were worse than anything Toybiz put out, minus a figure here or there.

I think this is relatively accurate. Another category though should be parts re-use, in which ToyBiz would win no contest. Hasbro re-uses parts like there's no tomorrow.

Haha yeah, although I did see a Walmart roll back the prices on IM and Spider-Man down to $25...was tempted to grab them for that price. But eh I don't want to collect another line.

Talked to an employee at TRU last night, he was talking about the Dark Phoenix/Cyclops and Spidey/MJ packs. He ran the numbers for the DP/C pack and said, while no stores actually have them in yet, the numbers are "live", meaning that they're active, in the system, and ready for the stock to come in.

He didn't have the numbers for the SM/MJ pack, but said that they should be showing up any day now, since in their system they're tired to the Homecoming releases.

Welp, regarding the Homecoming wave, I'm going to check my TRU this Friday morning to see if they will have it in. Scared as hell I will have to deal with the scalpers dudes again, don't know what I will do if it gets ugly, since I know I will be first in line to get into the store unlike last time.

Went to my TRU today as they get a delivery on tues and fri and they had a main display for Homecoming, but no legends.

And to go back a little, here are my Legendary Comic Book Heroes, shame they only did 2 waves. Also, if anyone has the missing arm and leg to Monkeyman I'd be willing to trade or buy them from you.

LOL I would totally do that but I have a lot of unresolved stomach problems right now and I can't eat spicy foods. Maybe I should just eat a lot of beans.

Should be any day now. Someone said May 1st was when they were supposed to hit but obviously that's wrong.

I want to get that female figure from that series, I don't know her name. She looks like she's wearing 80's clothing. Would be great for a custom.
