Found this at Wal-mart tonight. Anybody else seen the one with the gold details and gray hair?

Thanks for the heads up, Andy. If it's really gonna turn out to be sought after, I might want it for myself.

Ok. (I live right in downtown Atlanta, so this adventure was doable in one afternoon.) 4 Targets, 2 WalMarts and 3 TRUs. ALL had Thor pegs, found a total of 13 Odins, all silver, none gold. LMAO I am pathetic!!! But I'm a sucker for a variant!

I went back and bought this one. This particular one does not have any gold in the hair. It is just gray instead of the white hair on the normal figure.

I've seen Odin a few times in stores, and although my gut told me to pick him up I passed to go with other figures. I don't recall seeing the gold variant, and I'm pretty sure I would notice his strange posture compared to the silver version. Is the variant without an eye patch? I guess I'll pick one or two up if I see them, but the extra one is going to my buddy (a fellow collector).

I never noticed a difference when I saw these couple weeks+ back at my local walmart. kinda like dogfashiondisco mentioned I had a gut feeling to buy but opted for others... not thor MU instead as I found WWH, doc sampson/samson , spiderman 2099 and spider woman.... they jumped at me 10 x harder then the thor line. I notied though that Thor in the 8'' has a regular and variant with light up chest and hammer, same with the base set, it was regular thor with normal hammer, thor with cape, thor with light up chest, thor with light up hammer haha... and then I saw loki and a few of the frost giants... to be honest destroyer is about the only thing I really want the rest I may get but they're not as appealing as the IM2 figs or captain america merch coming out.

So I was at a Wal-Mart earlier, and I found five of the variant Odin figures. If anyone is looking for one, I would be willing to trade.

I really think now that this is a running change instead of a variant. The plain silver Odins are probably going to end up being the harder to find ones.

After a closer look, Odin has the gold details in the picture on the back of the regular packages. That, and it's obviously becoming easier to find. It was probably a mistake that he didn't have the extra paint apps to begin with.

I dunno...look at the upper leg plates on the other figure. Where the 'original' doesn't have any or is at least minimally defined, the 'other' figure has a more concretely defined one.

I guess the real question is, how much change does there need to be to constitute a variant over a running change?

Well, that depends on your definition of variant versus running change.

A variant is usually defined as an intentional change or alteration made to a figure by the manufacturer that is released concurrently (in most cases) with the original version of the figure, but in relatively smaller quantities. Releasing a variant is most frequently done as a reference or homage to something within the character's history (a person, event, costume change, etc).

Also, a chase figure is a variant that was produced in very low quantities on purpose to increase its rarity.

A running change, on the other hand, is usually done to correct an error in the design and/or manufacturing process. The new version of the figure effectively replaces the original release, since by making the change, the original can no longer be produced.

Based on those definitions, a running change could be as simple as the color of a single paint app (IM2 3.75" War Machine's ARC reactor "light" going from blue to red).

So does the gold Odin constitute as a variant, or should I go pick up a silver Odin?

Assuming you're trying to get the "variant" version, I would suggest picking up both just to be sure.

And if the gold one is all you can find in the next three months, then it was a running change and the gold one is standard. If you can still find more silver than gold, chances are that the gold one is a variant.

You could also ask about this for the next Marvel Q&A.

Fair enough, I just want to have first dibs for once on something rare, and it is pretty cool to find a variant of a Marvel figure that is also Anthony Hopkins.

Stopped by Walmart on the way to work and saw 3 or 4 of the gold Odin's and none of the silver Odin's. I think Saint Phe might be right about this being a running change instead of a variant thus making the original silver one possibly harder to find.

It's worth mentioning that the version being sold on the Hasbro site is silver, and they are out of stock.

I thought the gold was the variant? I went to a few stores today and they had all silver no gold. I wonder am I the only 1 that has the "meh" feeling when it comes to this Thor movie line,.. I don't hate them but I don't love them and I don't feel they tie in as well as the Wolverine Origins figures did. The captain america figures are different I want like all them because they have a comic feel and look like MU, these thor figure are trying to be realistic but not enough to look good and enough to take away from the comic feel. The hammer and helmet are about the 2 things other then destroyer that I want haha.
