I stopped reading Spiderman after One More Day. I remember reading spoilers of it on Myspace thinking it was a badly concocted rumor.
Then I found out all that s&%$ was true once I got the books. What a lame story. The only good thing to come of it was that it retconned the Clone saga out. I randomly read the Antivenom trade which I thought was cool(surprised there's no MU figure of Antivenom yet WTF?!). Then I read one trade where Marvel retconned Gwen Stacy into being a hoe and shacking up with Green Goblin behind Peter's back before she died. BIG WTF. So aside from Antivenom has there been ANYTHING good from Spidey since OMD?

As a non spiderman reader, I really enjoyed the recent Kraven storyline they did. People seemed to like the Spider-Island event that just ended too.

I was picking up the book for a bit but got out with Spider Island. I like the older books before the nineties so most of what has happened since really isn't my cup of tea except when they showed who the Hobgoblin was But they some dick decided to kill him off. I get enough of him in my Avengers.

Kraven's family of psychos is hunting everyone associated with Spider Man with the intent of useing their blood in a necromantic ceremony to bring Kraven back from the dead. It's a really dark read- two major Spider-people get murdered horribly and Pete rips a bitch's face almost right off with his "sticks to anything" power- he comes right to the edge of going all "Punisher" forever. A real good read when it's all together. Recently, Spider-Man has been a great comic- really worth reading. Too bad te editor on that book, Steven Wacker is such an asshole- frequently talking trash to fans on CBR. (not that I'd hold that against the actual creators of the book, but still). Antivenom is great though,he supposedly set a record for fastest toy release in conjunction with appearance. I'm also liking the new Venom, a lot, even though he's got nothing to do with this topic. |

Er...it was not retconned in any way- in fact the new scarlett spider (with his awesome coustme) is Kaine!
!!!!!!SPOILERS!!!!!!! Kaine got killed recently (in The Grim Hunt) and ressurected by the Spider Queen thing from Spider Island (which I skipped). Some stuff happened and he got fixed up good- now he's a stable clone of Peter (a bit more muscular and still taller, I think) and has all Peter's powers- but none of his old powerset- and skipped town to find a life for himself. He runs afowl of some human trafficers in Texas and gets involved despite telling himself that's not his thing and is a reluctant champion of a little mexican girl he rescued that he cant even talk to as he speaks no spanish. The girl has a contract on her and the bad guys that are trying to kill her are people Kaine used to run with (before the Clone Saga). So he's basicly the same mean guy with Peter's powers in a cooler costume, taking the name of a clone he had occasionally tried to murder. Oh, he cut his hair real short too- fits the mask better. |

While I liked Ben, he was too much like Peter to be anything but a stand-in.
Kaine has potential to develop into a classic Marvel Redemption Story like their classic characters- Hawkeye, Iron Man, Black Widw, Ant Man (Scott Lang), etc. Someone that starts out selfish and even crimminal, only to see the impact his/her actions have and work to redeem themselves. I just wish Peter had kept Ben's weapons imporvments- untill Big Time, Peter had not invented hardly squat since his origin! The web-bomb things that could shoot out (but quickly drain the shooters) were great! |

DeMatteis, Fred Van Lente, Phil Jimenez, Michael Lark, Max Fiumara, Philip Briones: Books excellent =D i'll prolly pick this up whenever i finally place an order in for that new TMNT volume. |

Jumping off after one more day was one of the worst things you could have done, imo. You missed out on the beautiful marcos martin art, the awesome Joe Kelly Rhino stories, a really creepy Lizard tale, the grimm hunt, new villains like Mr. Negative, and all the craziness that is Dan Slott/Horizon Labs/Spider-Island.
If you endured the JMS run that led up to OMD, you owe it to yourself to check out quality, exciting Spidey stories that don't involve spider totems. |

Totoally agree with Uberlad on this- after OMD, it was like opening a window in a room that someone had farted up.
And it's stayed consistantly good since too- I jumped off when for a while the art crapped out (hate Joe Mad's cartoony crap). If you want some additional kickass stuff, you need the new Daredevil and Punisher series! Really- they take street level heroes helping (or killing in Punisher's case) normal people with crazy problems and set all three firmly into the Marvel Universe without losing the realism of thir supporting casts. Best of all- events in daredevil have been building to a huge "everyone out to kill DD" confrontation and it crosses over into Spidey and Punisher books- On a recent case, DD helped a blind kid escape a mob hit and aquired a piece of super-technology that has key information on all of marvel's big mob and terror organizations- Matt's senses go nuts trying to "look" at it because it's made from the "4" disk of a FF costume- all unstable molecules! But since Matt is blind, he has no clue where it comes from and has been keeping the thing as insurance so the various bad guys wont carry out their hit on the kid...but that makes DD a huge target for everyone with a stake in the information- Hydra, AIM, the Mob, Black Spectre, etc. oh...and DD slept with the Black Cat, pissing off Spidey no end, but she was playing matt to try and steal the disk for the mob for crazy money. As to Punisher...it's THE single BEST PUNISHER series to date! NOT only is it incredible artwork, but the narrative in the story is fresh and awesome- no thought balloons! everything that happens is either shown or something said by someone- and Punisher has said maybe ten sentences in as many issues! There are supporting characters that each have their own motivations and quirks- including Norah Jones from Spidey's books- and for the first time ever it looks like Frank is going to have...a partner? And like the others, it's set firmly in the MU- one of the main drug lords Frank is trying to kill is a former SHIELD agent, with all sorts of training and SHIELD high tech stuff at his disposal. If I had to choose only three titles from every company to read each month, Punisher would definitely be one of them- amazing art too! |

Sounds cool, I'll have to check that out. I have a soft spot for Punisher comics but the story has to be decent.

I'm telling you man, wait for the trades if you want, but definitely pick up Punisher and Daredevil- fantastic flippin' reads!
From Marvel, the top books have only one "big name" character- their best books are (drumrioll please)... Journey Into Mystery (starring the all-new all-scheming, not-evil but not good exactly Loki!) They took the most tired Asgardian character marvel had and remade him into a God with....no powers at all! Loki must scheme and connive with his wits to manipulate the likes of Mephisto, Hela, Tyr, Nightmare, Surtur and the internet to do the right thing via questionable methods. Punisher- I've said all I can say without spoiling some of the suprises and badassness- the entire series reads like wathing a great movie- no thought balloons or introspection and no "boxes" to recap or spoon feed you the story. Daredevil- go ahead and read some of the glowing online reviews and check out the art on this- they manged to do a DD/Moleman story that was a great read- if they can make Moleman worth reading, it's a great series. Amazing Spider-Man- BIG adventure more on par with his role as an Avenger- and when the excrement hits the intakes, he calls in the whole team to fight-the current storyline will pit the now-armored Spider-Man and the Avengers against the Sinister Six! Avengers! Great art great story and dialogue and great new additions to the team in Storm Quake and the return of the real Vision! Plus it was great to see Storm electrocute a hulked-out Norman Osborn...only to have Quake give him a heart attack. Yeah, she'd kill the Hulk just that easy. Possibly adding to the list- Captain America & Hawkeye- this looks real good- art by Secret Warriors' artist Alessandro Vitti! Worthwhile for the off chance of a Fury appearance. Everything else...take it or leave it, frankly. |

Daredevil really is that awesome. I don't think Mark Waid gets his due nearly enough, but the entire package of that title works to perfection.
I know DD/Punisher/Spidey all fall under editor Steve Wacker. I can't think of anything he's worked on that I haven't enjoyed. |

It's been a mixed bag. The hardest part for me though is almost none of these stories seem to have hinged on the marriage at all. It could still be intact and they could be told.
I'm also starting to get tired of the fact they never closed the faustian deal trope with the basic love conquers all angle as foreshadowed. It feels like it never ended without that, and just feels wrong. So far the only highlights that stuck out to me have been Anti-venom, the new scarlet spider(which still needs more issues for a real verdict either way), and Future Foundation with Johnny Storm living with Petey now. They also still have some minor plot holes to fill though that make it best left to not think about what they did. It feels weird that he even did the deal though now that he's going around and telling fellow superheroes who he is again which will take us eventually back to the main problem again. As for Anti-Venom they've recently removed his suit, and sent Eddie on a mission to wipe out all symbiotes of venom's race. The new venom series has been fun at times, but it's really hard to feel sympathetic to Flash knowing he was the guy who used to bully Parker around. I know I know, they've grown up and matured. It just feels weird having him promoted to being a superhero now though as opposed to just being somebody that Parker has become friends with and helps. Making him a superhero, even an anti-hero, feels too much like a reward for being the bully in the supporting cast of a marvel mainstay. As for Wacker. The writers that work under him do great work, I don't know whether to credit that to editor story choices, or the fact he's picking known great writers and artists anyway. I'll reserve that decision for when he does something with a complete unknown. He's also the editor for the female Ghost Rider series(pretty much does the urban marvel, and will be doing the upcoming Ms. Captain Marvel). It's kind of hard to really pick apart how much work the editor really does, or if he just acts as an "agent"(like in hollywood terms for writers/actors) for creatives within marvel. |

I liken the editor to the director of a film. Wacker > Michael Bay wannabees working in comics.
I haven't read the girl ghost rider, but the new DD, Spidey, and 52 were/are Wack-ed out, and they're all good by me. |

Regarding Spidey revealing his identity to the New Avengers and FF- The FF knew forever anyway and no one could be trusted more and the new Avengers stood by Peter through all the CW and Secret Invasion stuff so not telling them (again) would be a kind of betrayal.
He only re-told people he knew were cool with it before anyway- and Wolverine and Doctor Strange always knew. But that gimmick where people supposedly would forget his identity when he put hs mask back on has been dropped- same with the X-Men gimmick where they could not be seen by technology or even cameras- it was too much to keep up with and limited the range of stories. Peter also told one girl he was intimate with- and promptly got dumped for his trouble! At least he got laid. |

I dont see any of Peter's actions being irresponsible- he's finally out of Aunt May's endless guilt-trip, finally useing his science and superhero experiences to make money and he's finally secure enough to unmask to people he trusts with his very life.
He's matured- about damn time, frankly. As to the Black Cat...well... it may be hypicritical, but what guy wants to see his recently-ex-girlfriend with another guy? Even if he's with someone else (and he'd just gotten dumped), he still cares- and watching his reactions as Felicia fawned over DD (that player!) was hysterical! Believe me, nothing twists the knife like having an ex date a friend. But overall, the book is just geared to a more mature demographic, while retaining the stuff we love about Spidey. And the roomate thing should be fun.... |
