Because it rhymes? The comic industry has traditionally employed all sorts of literary devices from alliterative names (Peter Parker, Reed Richards, Bruce Banner, etc) to onomatopoeia (thwip, skint, ka-thoom, and so on). "Tri-faces" certainly makes more sense, but "Tri-Eyes" is the winner in a campy sense simply by virtue of the fact that rolls off the tongue more readily and sounds better.
