Do I DARE To start collecting this line?

Well me being the continual on and off comic book fan I am of Marvel [Keep in mind I just announced I am retired now from Collecting] I see so many good figures of some characters I like -For some reason Dr. Doom needs to find a spot in my collection......or if there's a good Magneto figure out there I might want one-

I'm basically right now leaning AWAY from collecting further, but the more I see of the figures the Admiral Ackbar that pops out of nowhere keeps shouting "IT's A TRAP!"....Uh...that didn't come out right basically saying should I just back away from the Marvel Line, and run....

Or get a few figures here and there? I'm primarily a X-Men fan and have always loved the old Toy Biz Line -I still need to find me a good old Toy Biz Cable figure since I think that's the best representation yet that I've seen-

Course I wouldn't have room for anymore figures as it is....gaahhhhhh......Lots of cool figures for the Marvel Universe line and I'm still picking up some Gundam Kits here and there......

So Collect this line?

Yes?

No?

IT's A TRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

-Couldn't resist that last one-

perrych 10-03-2011 07:32 AM

I would say right now is a great time to get in - although if you are a complete-ist, you may have a few challenges.

But at the moment, the Marvel Gift set would be a great way to get started with the "core" figures with a great set of sculpts. Also, the X-men Giant set is really well done. The biggest challenges might be with the movie lines - they have been hard for just about anyone to get all the figures from. With many stores still stocking the revisions from early waves - the many different Hulks, Ms. Marvel, Vision - and many other hard to find or poorly done early wave characters getting remade (Hulk, Punisher, Daredevil) - its not a bad time at all. Some challenges will be in the Giant Battles - with the two Goliaths, the Frost Giant, and the Super Skrull - as these were WM exclusives and have left the shelves by and large.

thechris 10-03-2011 08:05 AM

Are you talking about Marvel Universe? Uh, yeah, I don't know. Depends on how much you want to be spending. If you're going to hate yourself for spending hundreds on this line, then don't get into it. Seriously, it's expensive and some of the figures aren't even worth it in my opinion. One thing that you might want to consider is planning out your collection. Write down the ones that you definitely want and price them out before even dipping in because once you have a few in your possession, you'll want more and you'll possibly feel both turned off by the price and compelled to buy since you already have some.

For example, if you wanted Silver Age Avengers, you'll end up with a few, but there are a few that aren't made yet (may never be made) and then some are ridiculously expensive like Silver Age Vision (non-phasing version) and let's face it, most people want the non-phasing version. I may start taking my own advice and do this myself before diving in and feeling disappointed by pricing and availability. That way you'll have a definite set goal and won't go too overboard. You'll also have a realistic budget you're willing to pay. Say, if you don't want to spend more than 200 to build a small collection, you'll know what you're willing to pay, build it around that price. Once you achieve your goals, done.

Optimus Vader 10-03-2011 08:14 AM

You didn't give any pros/cons that would relate to your current situation in life, so I don't think anyone really knows why you're asking or how to answer you.

Yes, you should start collecting Marvel Universe figures. Go buy five now and then post about it.

Tyjos Azari 10-03-2011 08:21 AM

Well right now I don't have too much money to spend [I'd have to make the money through my ebay sales] and having just spent a good bit this past month and hit my Limit-Actually went over it a good bit cause the last few major items I wanted added more too it but got that covered now- which I set is around $300-$400 to spend each month cause I do a lot of online buying and have to allocate in shipping.

But since I am Retiring from collecting and would be nice to get away from the impulse buys or things that would lead to Impulse Buys[I can tell Marvel Universe the lines would be impulse buys for most of it] So Right now I am leaning AWAY from collecting since I've been collecting for quite a while and now might not be the best time to jump into a new line.

-After all I gotta let my funds build back up and between Gundam HG Models I'm collecting that are sometimes $15-$30 a pop Marvel Universe figures would add more to what I'd spend and right now I'm going to be watching my budget and keep down the urges to spend stuff on figures now too, I eventually hope for a month where I spend less than $40 the whole month-

Just needed to bounce this off the Marvel Collectors here since you guys all seem involved deeply with this line....

I have seen the sets of Figures and they look like a good deal but just am trying to avoid impulse buys if I really want to get into this line. Only Marvel related stuff I've bought has been just a few Iron Man Figures here and there from the Movie Lines but that's been it over the past few years.

I would like to get the Main X-Men Team, Cable, and probably the Avengers and maybe the FF4 from the line.

LXL_Guy 10-03-2011 08:29 AM

Honestly if you get into this line, just pick the figures you like. Stick to that frame of thought and you should be okay.

Tyjos Azari 10-03-2011 08:32 AM

I doubt I'll be going nuts as I see some doing over getting whole waves of the stuff if I do, I used to do that with Star Wars till got overloaded with Clones......also used to do it with Transformers too but not this time around.....don't have that much cash for sure. Besides I eventually plan to be where I won't feel like buying a figure -After all over the last few years spent getting the stuff I want, I think if anything the Marvel Line would be more of a Nostalgic Want/Impulse Buy the more I look at it-

thechris 10-03-2011 08:39 AM

Fantastic Four is doable. Get the four pack and any flame-on Human Torch. DONE. Villain? Dr. Doom, DONE. Avengers and X-Men are a bit iffy. It depends on who you consider the "main" X-Men team. That's when people are like "Uh...." Same with the Avengers. My suggestions, if you're an old school fan, get the Giant Size X-Men boxset and the Classic Avengers boxset. The Giant Size X-Men features most of the X-Men from that comic minus Banshee and Classic Avengers is a done set. Also consider getting a Captain America from eBay. There's currently NO Beast figure from Jim Lee and earlier in the forseeable future. For mainstream villain pairings. You have Magneto, Mystique and Juggernaut. Avengers, you have the Wrecking Crew, Loki, Enchantress, Crimson Dynamo from IM2, Ultron, Absorbing Man. Those are all still relatively affordable figures and gives you a good sense of completion. Great tip, always confirm that all figures exist and are affordable before diving into a new "team". Teams'll get you. It's what gets a lot of people.

Do Boy 10-03-2011 08:42 AM

I say collect it!!!

Fedup23 10-03-2011 08:44 AM

Knowing nothing about you and just going by your posts here..I say no..don't buy anything..you just stated at least twice that you retired from collecting.

Hi guys..I just quit crack ...should I go out and buy some crack?

Go for it, just make sure you think real hard about who you are getting, for me it's really about who you'd still want to display, and maybe take down and mess around with.
So in closing, it's great, just don't go crazy.

By the way digging your GM custom, sweet avatar.

thechris 10-03-2011 08:51 AM

Based on my suggestions, you're already looking at roughly $320. If your financial situation isn't that great, and you said it wasn't, I wouldn't go for it, dude. And no offense, but you sound like somebody with a slightly addictive personality from what you mentioned in the past with Star Wars and you've gone over your limit before, which is baaad.

So you never specified. What would you consider "the Main X-Men" and "the Main Avengers"? I ask, because those teams could run you anywhere from $14.99 to $200 depending on who you're considering.

omega145 10-03-2011 09:16 AM

Is it me or did you not clearly state which line you are considering collecting? Are you talking about Marvel Universe or the older Toy Biz line?

thechris 10-03-2011 09:23 AM

Oh geez, if it's ToyBiz, well then you already know what's out. Go for it.

CLASSIFIED 10-03-2011 09:46 AM

I don't think you should start collecting the toy line you are talking about because you have already retired from collecting.

It'd be like Ric Flair wrestling for TNA after he already retired in the WWE; a complete mess.

Yeah and we know what that leads to. A dried up old bastard with more loose skin than a shar pei puppy and crooked yellow teeth making a cameo on the Cleveland Show.

Honestly, you're out. Consider that a win, my friend. LOL.

Seril 10-03-2011 12:00 PM

I've considered this too before. For me I decided to pretty much only grab a very select few of the new marvel universe stuff. I'll wait until my local shop starts getting loose ones in from people selling off them when the next thing comes around. It happened with Marvel Legends. I can pick most of those up loose for $5 or so. Of course it's hit or miss on who they have.

If you're thinking about the old toybiz line, then I'd say hell yes! But, I'm one of the few people still collecting that line. Got about 80-85% of it so far. Still is unmatched for character selection.

trebleshot 10-03-2011 12:30 PM

My answer would be no. Don't go starting another line, especially since you just completed a collection. Enjoy that for a while before you think about starting up a new one.

And definitely don't do it if you're finances aren't ready to accept the new expenditure. MU can get very expensive, very quickly if you're not careful.

quinten182 10-03-2011 01:22 PM

If you can stick to only collecting the ones you like or possibly make a list in advance of who you want.. and don't get carried away otherwise, it would work for you. But I tried that when it first came out.. I fell into the completionist black hole soon after.

It'd be like Hogan announcing his retirement on Thursday's addition of Impact only to wrestle that Sunday at Bound for Glory.

Though, when I first read your retirement from toy collecting thread I didn't think you were going to actually stop collecting toys.

Just saying.

This. This. THIS.

Don't get too roped into it. I collected almost every Thor figure. Oops. Captain America, I just got movie cap, a couple Hdras and Red Skull. Done. Definitely make goals and take advantage of boxed sets.

Tyjos Azari 10-03-2011 01:31 PM

Well folks I made the jump into this line:

My Aunt picked up 2 figures for me today while we were out [expect a post showing off the stuff I've gotten today soon]

Apocolypse and Wolverine

Couldn't pass up Old Wolverine.....and since Apocolypse looks awesome had the opportunity to pick up the larger Toy Biz one at Animax while I was out too but Figured I'd try those two first.

I'll get em opened soon enough to see if they were worth it. I got the Wolverine that's the "Special Operations" Version as I call him the one where he was being trained and when he was teamed up with Sabertooth and Maverick.

Didn't see much in the Toy Aisles at Target that I wanted so decided to just pick up two figures.

Not bad price at $7.99 so if I wanted a occasional figure that it's doable in my budget....course my Aunt always gets me a ton of stuff when we're out and since I recently had a birthday well she missed it and this made up for it.

AndyCR75 10-03-2011 02:34 PM

Seriously? Run now. Do NOT turn back.

LOL!

I still think what I need to do is not only pace how many I get, in fact I need to limit how many I even think about getting.

Is there a Professor Xavier Figure? I think there's a Magneto figure basically right now looking for a few X-Men characters.....

I MUST RESIST!!!Already feeling the pull to complete That Special Ops team Wolverine was a part of since I already got Maverick.... At least these 2 My Aunt bought em for me, and there were only two characters I was interested in the whole section....

But if anything my Collection probably wouldn't be fully complete without at least a few Marvel Universe figures in it.

My Financial Situation changes every month depending on how great my ebay sales are and when I get ready to make the push to cleaning out my Anime figures[That's easily about $50-$100 per figure there so shouldn't have too much a problem finding cash for Marvel Universe I mean right now I'm in the Green with my Finances just will have to keep a firm hold on it.]

Reason for my sudden interest in this line is that I always see the figures popping up on this site with new figures and I always glance over at that part of the Toy Aisles so with the dull Transformer lines and the same old Star Wars toys need too look at something different here and there.

SoundWave88 10-03-2011 03:14 PM

Beast, Jubilee, Psychlocke, Storm, Magneto comming out soon. Mr. Sinister and Gambit 2 pack comming soon. I believe early next year there is to be an old school feathered Angel.

No Xavier yet, but plenty of other X-Men to keep you busy.
