Marvel Universe

These are hot toys right now but you know how like classic 90s toy biz marvel figures ain't really worth anything. Do you think Universe will be worth anything in 10-15 years.

uberlad 09-20-2014 07:17 PM

I don't think many toys will be worth much long term. If they are, it will be a pleasant surprise. Otherwise they are usually replaced by the next thing.

chuckythe4th 09-20-2014 07:22 PM

True but it can't be only toys from the 80s that are worth anything

bmorr 09-20-2014 08:04 PM

toys and comics from the 90s arent worth anything cause they were overproduced and too many people held onto them. the opposite of this holds true for toys from the 70s and 80s. They are worth more cause there are less product out there from those two decades. Demand is also a factor as well.

I too agree that the 90s marvel figures could lose their importance as they many people had toys from that generation. Plus, they were also famous. The Marvel action figures of the 90s were in 5” and 10” scale, with varying success in sculpts and quality.

perhaps this is why the good folks at Hasbro like to keep the numbers down for the long term investor because you cant find them in stores!!! ;) I think they will be worth money. They are awesome, small and in demand, 3.75" is a great collectors scale! I think now with Disney pushing the Marvel brand they will garner even more popularity.

In this scale, as far as collectability goes...what could be the next big thing? I think these guys will stand the test of time. Marvel is big and getting bigger. The smallness only adds to the desire to collect for it vehicles, playsets, and less space premium.

Probably depends on if anything replaces it that is either better or a newer sculpt.

Toy Biz stuff from the 90's is worthless because Marvel Legends/Marvel Universe replaced it with better product and sculpts.

Secret Wars stuff from 80's holds value because it's the first of the toys from the Marvel world and has a very vintage feel to it.

Example. As long as Hasbro doesn't make another Jim Lee Cyclops in the 4" version that is better I'd say they are good to go. I don't see how they can improve on the figure itself. But who knows maybe people were saying that back in the 80/90's also. lol.

I think the only thing that could kill the value is if people in general loose interest in the 4" market. I know I have. 6" for the price is so much better IMO.

I'd also ad to that the fact that this line has run during a rough economic time, I'm sure there are a lot of kids out there that collect this line, but due to there family's financial situation can't afford certain pieces, once everything straightens out, and eventually it will, I think a lot of people will want to get on after the fact. That and the scope of this line, something like 500 plus unique figures, and there compatibility with tons of other properties lend MU to being, in my opinion, one of the most desirable collector based lines in history.Hell I was done collecting for a few years until the MU came along and dragged me back!

I still think that toys in general are a short term investment. There will likely be a few figures that retain value, but overall, toys are produced in such numbers and you have so many collectors with MOC collections--you just didn't have that in the 80s. That rarity drives much of the toy market value. Plus, I haven't seen a ton of kids with MU collections, so you may not have the nostalgia factor ten or twenty years from now, either.

The next thing might be seamless joints or Disney infinity-style electronic components or figures that stores actually sell ;-). Who knows? That's why I open and play with my toys with my son, because it doesn't matter if he smashes my vision and firestar together. They're just toys after all--that's where their value really is.
