Toy Fair 2015 - Playmates TMNT
|
If I collected the nick toon line I'd be somewhat excited, but I don't so none of this really holds my interest. Definitely a shame they mention nothing of the classics line.

It's nice to see a toy line with a lot of great, varied, relevant product that we will actually see on store shelves! I have to say Playmates (and namely the TMNT line) were the best action figures in terms of availability, selection, and quality in 2014, and from the showing here I'd say 2015 will be no different. take a look Hasbro that's how you do it!

#1 on my ToyFair 2015 list was the TMNT classics line. This is a HUGE Let Down! This is the 3rd Shredder figure that Playmates has had there hand in canceling. 1st was NECA's amazing Eastman and Laird Shredder, then Playmates horrible Eastman and Laird Shredder, now the Classic Cartoon Shredder? Playmates, you are the worst company out there for adult collectors! But you already know that. They released there terrible rendition of 1990 Movie Turtles(which were bad but I still bought Raph and Mikey)and they say sales were bad. Why did you even release them? If Nickelodeon gave a crap about adult fans, all they have to do is call NECA. Series 2 of Eastman and Laird's comic design figures are painted prototypes! They're ready to be made. NECA could do amazing things with the 1990 movie too. If Playmates has thrown in the towel with adult collector figures, I want to know what happens now? |
Not really a fan of the guy who was there at the Playmates booth. I watched an interview on Youtube and I felt like he pretty much scoffs at adult collectors. Not really caring about paint apps/final product details. And he just kind shrugs off a regular version Karai unless Serpent Karai does well...
|
Playmates has always been bad with paint. but the detail in there sculpts are really amazing. there is a guy on here who puts up pics of custom painted TMNT figures time to time and there really amazing.

If they ever did get the rights back though, I can only imagine how cool that'd be. After they released that 7" 1989 Batman, I wouldn't be surprised to see something crazy like this happening. You can't rule it out, neither can NECA. If some miracle they do, they should pick up the 1990 movie license too. As it stands right now, Playmates has let us down....again. This company is just like Mattel to classic DC movies. They're not gonna make 7" collector figures, but nobody else can either. Even though the quality of NECA VS Playmates and Mattel isn't even worth a comparison. |
No Sir Malachi? I bid Playmates good day.
|
The Classics line being canned is bullshit considering they did Bebop and Rocksteady BEFORE god damn Shredder. And how did it not perform to expectations? They were always sold out in every store I went to. I never once saw a single Classic figure on the pegs.
Anyway, how about some other comic book versions? At least give us freaking April, Shredder, and SPlinter. |

Hopefully this abuse at the hands of playmates will encourage more third party toy makers to make tmnt knock offs to fill the lines (classics, NECA style, etc)
|
Definitely a shame they're choosing to can the classics line. I had my heart set on the krang android body as I never had the original as a kid. I know some company is making a highly detailed version of that figure for probably something like $200. Not sure I want to go that route, but....
|
Keep in mind that the Manufacturers like Playmates don't deal directly with us, The retailers probably ordered many more cases of the Nick Toon turtles to satisfy demand for the Christmas season (they didn't order enough by the way, as they were all sold out at every store in my area) and fewer of the classics, as the vast majority of there target audience would prefer the newer versions. then Playmates just sees on paper that they sold a million cases of Nick Turtles, and a hundred cases of classics so logically from there point of view the classics weren't worth the bother.
|
Shame too that from the showing they're moving away from straight action figures to more gimmick driven sub lines and those little car things.

I wanted to get into the classic line, but I could never find them. I only ever saw each series once at a single TRU, and there were three stores locally at the time. No other stores in the area carried them.
Everything TMNT down the toy aisle sold out at almost every store in the area during Christmas. Most shelves were bare. |

It also doesn't help that they spent nearly the entire third season on pointless stand alone episodes rather than getting back to NYC. |
Agree with the 3rd season. It seemed like every episode was an homage to some other movie. Just too much filler and not enough focus on the actual storyline.
I think they have always been known for doing a bunch of turtle variants, but it does get old sometimes. Especially when they won't do all of the regular characters first... |

I don't want to completely discredit them. I really liked the 80s cartoon classics. First time I've looked forward to a Playmates toy in a couple decades. They just seem stupid for going on "Hiatus". Playmates(surprisingly)did a good job on these sculpts, even the Shredder and Krang. While not in 6" scale, it was still nice to have 6" classic TMNT. |

I predict that they're gonna ride that train until this new generation of younger fans finally begin to lose interest, and then at that time, I imagine that Nickelodeon will then seek to capitalize on the nostalgia market again. Nickelodeon is making so much money by focusing on the stuff aimed at kids, that we adult fans just aren't on their radar right now. But we will be, as soon as the huge popularity that the franchise is currently experiencing inevitably begins to dwindle. At that point, Nick will look to us to keep the money coming in, and hopefully that will result in the collector-grade stuff that we all want. Hopefully then, they'll allow someone like NECA to produce figures that we older fans want to buy. |
