Funko gets Daredevil TV License

Funko and Others Producing Daredevil TV Series Merchandise

At last, some merchandise! Absolutely love the show. Thinking about watching it all from start to finish for the second time soon.

Drewerd 05-28-2015 01:44 PM

definitely buying the pop!, but there has to be a full line of legacy figures, the series is perfect for them. I would love the whole cast .

JamesBenjamin 05-28-2015 02:11 PM

Hasbro has the entire Marvel figures license. There will not be Funko Legacy or Re-Action figures from them.

I'm kind of hoping that the supposedly upcoming Walgreens Daredevil Legends wave will include figures based on the show. Select could also possibly make some.

A Friend 05-28-2015 02:36 PM

While I'm happy just to have some merchandise in general, I'm desperate to have some proper action figures from the show. At least Daredevil in the finale costume but I'd like a black costume one too, seeing as that had way more screentime.

The Dread Pirate Roberts costume needs toy love too.

Indeed, indeed. I don't think we've ever had a black costume Daredevil before. Might be wrong though...

With season 2 filming now, it almost makes sense for them to do a "Netflix wave" with the 2 DDs, Fisk, Jessica Jones, Power Man, and Purple Man all in one wave, when DD s2 and AKA: JJ are released.

I'm sure companies like Diamond Select Toys, NECA, Gentle Giant, Square Enix, Hot Toys, Sideshow, 3A, Comicave, Bandai, Beast Kingdom, and Sentinel would all disagree with that statement.

Id love a Marvel Select release of the red costume. But as far as hasbro goes, do you think their would be any holdups with them releasing toys for such a "mature" show. I know its part of the MCU and everything, but as far as adaptations go, it wasn't the most kid friendly. I can see places like Hot Topic carrying stuff, but its hard to see a D'onofrio Kingpin Marvel legend getting made and sold at TRU.

Hasbro doesn't do R-rated material so I'd say if we get any legends figure it'd be exclusive to Walgreens (maybe that's what that supposed Walgreens Daredevil figure will be) or online only.

There was the Thomas Jane Punisher Marvel Legends though. Oh wait they were still under Toybiz at that point weren't they?

There was a movie Blade too but yes, that was when Toybiz was in charge of them. Things have changed a lot since then. There's a lot less action figures from shows or movies with high ratings or adult themes on the shelves of regular toy stores these days. Well, here in the UK at least. I remember seeing the McFarlane spawn line on the shelves of a typical discount store back in 2003...and those things looked terrifying!

The closest thing I've seen to an action figure from something with a high age range in a regular toy store over the past few years is the Funko Pop Predator. Don't forget, there was that Breaking Bad action figure controversy too, which pretty much took all the action figures away from US Toys R Us stores, despite there being an adult collector section. I could see Hasbro making at least Daredevil and Fisk and making them comic book store exclusives like the Wolverine wave back in 2013. Even if they were on the shelves of a regular toy store, I don't think they would cause quite as much of an uproar as the Breaking Bad figures did but I could see some people complaining saying "By having these figures on the shelves, this will encourage young people to watch a show with graphic violence" maybe.

Here in the states our Toys R Us stores carry NECA and McFarlane Toys stuff for adult aimed licenses year round. Hell at Wal-Mart stores now they put the Walking Dead stuff next to the Pokemon cards by checkout.

I've seen some of the McFarlane Halo figures in UK Toys R Us stores but sadly we don't have adult collector sections over here, so there's no Neca stuff either. Neca stuff, unless it's old, is pretty easy for me to get online but I'm one of those people that if given the choice, would rather go and pick it up from a local store. It's not like there are no stores in the UK that sell Neca figures though.

NECA is the only brand that is a valid comparison and they don't have any Marvel figures (in this price range) either. The others are all international or "high dollar collectables" (as silly as that sounds when comparing a $20 6" Hasbro figure to the $25 Selects).

But just like how Lego cannot release single Marvel or Star Wars minifigures because Hasbro has the license, Funko will also not be able to release any. Funko can't even make "Star Wars pops" because they count as "Action Figures" all the ones they make are officially bobble heads.

Joe Moore 05-29-2015 09:10 AM

You can't consider a $25 toy a high dollar collectible. That's a fairly low price of entry into the collectible market. For some lines, that 's not even considered a high priced figure. Also, DST still make Marvel Minimates, which are inexpensive and sold along size other collectibles, even though they are comparable to LEGO and Kre-O.

And while the "Pops" are listed as Bobble's for Marvel, they are doing other vinyl figures based on Marvel properties. Then you have companies like Monogram, doing non-articulated figures as well.

Then there's the whole DC thing, where Mattel and DC Collectibles have the major action figure licenses for North America, yet Funko is able to create ReAction versions of both Arrow and Flash TV series.

Someone has the question out to ReisOBrien of Funko. I'm curious if he will answer or not.

I actually know Reis in person (though not well, through local toy shows) and while never specifically outlining contractual details has said to me (essentially) that they can't make something Hasbro makes, period.

I can't say how Marvel Select can make what they make but somehow its a different "category" from Marvel Legends. Funko's Legacy line is the same scale as Marvel Legends and their Re-Action line is the same scale as Marvel Universe, so I'd imagine that's the cut off. As for the DC stuff, that's another company, not Hasbro/Disney(Marvel)

But since we don't know the contractual details (much like all the hub-bub on TFW about Takara's car licensing for the Masterpiece transformers) its really moot. That said, looking at current offerings I'm pretty sure anything Marvel will come out through existing licensors due to existing contracts, since Marvel wouldn't make a new contract with Funko (in the face of Hasbro) for one show (Daredevil in this case) that has two possible figures (ninja DD & red suit DD). Hasbro put out a comic DD this year.

salsa4datass 05-29-2015 06:11 PM

Wait, Lego can't do single Marvel figures? No. They don't want to do them because they would lose money on the sets. Period. Why get $3.99 for one figure when you can do a $60-$100 set and have that one or two figures everyone wants. If that were the case, Mega Bloks would not have had 3 series of Marvel Mini-figures. I think selects are more Plastic Statues since they come with bases/dio's and that's why they get to do what they do but honestly. Marvel would give some one a side contract to do something if the price was right. And aren't Legends geared towards the adult collector anyway?

I wish every Select came with a base/dio piece, Venom is a bitch to stand. I'm not sure what the exact deal is, but Select figures are definitely still articulated toys (albeit I love using the term "plastic statues" for figures generally left on the shelf). I would guess Hasbro is okay with them because they are clearly aimed at a more "serious" audience, no threat to Hasbro's market. Legends are definitely still made to be play things, not exclusively aimed for adult collectors like Select are. It certainly seems Legends are somewhat made with collectors in mind but above all else they're still toys and kids can play with them.
