6" GI Joe, why not?

Hello fellow collectors

En Sabah Nerd 03-22-2017 12:20 AM

I'm surprised Hasbro hasn't done it yet. I don't think any other company besides Hasbro could do it though since they are the creators and sole owners of the property, unless of course Hasbro permitted it. After they started the 6" black series for Star Wars I thought G.I.Joe was an inevitable next step but so far nothing's been done.

KcKilla 03-22-2017 03:42 AM

I think price is a big issue here. Just look at what we are getting for $20 in black series/legends. Very few guns with no paint apps, and guns are a huge part of GI Joe, not to mention unique accessories. Getting the figures the way we would want them probably pushes them at least into the $40 range

Personally I welcome the delay in starting the GI Joe line, Hasbro is just getting it's 6 inch sea legs, just look at how much legends have improved since their first offerings.

SpasticPlastic 03-22-2017 04:01 AM

I'd be all in on a 6" line, as long as it is based off the RAH designs. My dream, though, is that Hasbro lets NECA or heck, even McFarlane, take a stab at it.

305Batman 03-22-2017 06:29 AM

I've said it over at The Fwoosh, it would be like printing money for Hasbro's! I'd probably be happy just getting Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow and an accessory pack!

Il Cattivo 03-22-2017 09:35 AM

just don't get rid of the 3 3/4 line. if they completely replace it with the 6" line then fuck no!

I asked the main Joe/Hasbro guy at Joe Con last year. He said he's brought it up and the people who make the decisions just weren't interested at this time. Joe seems to be going through some sort of transition right now. I think they are trying to figure out how to mix in transformers, micronauts and some other toy lines into something universal.

In addition to the weapons, I'd also say that web gear and vests further drive up the cost of the figures.

Not on my watch!!!!

Big time HELL NO.....

Also, what is a Joe without a vehicle? Their Tie Fighters for the 6" were a flop and without vehicles, there is NO line.

True.

But their Speeder Bike was a hit. I'd go for a 6" scale Silver Mirage or even a Skyhawk.

RolandofGilead 03-22-2017 12:22 PM

I seem to recall lots of talk over on The Fwoosh regarding 6" Joes. They said that while Hasbro wasn't interested at this time, the folks over at Mezco Toys were. Can you imagine One:12 Collective style Joes?

That would be awesome.

Jay West 03-22-2017 12:58 PM

I think one problem is more so than any line save Star Wars that GI Joe is 3.75. A vocal fan group would go nuts if 3.75 died for 6 inches which seems like what would happen if 6 inch Joes were made. Star Wars 3.75 is a pale imitation of its former glory. Joe couldn't handle the two lines. I would be highly against it if it meant the end of 3.75, but if they co-exist I don't mind.

Unlikely. Compare a given 3.75 GI Joe figure to a 3.75 Marvel figure, and you see a LOT more per buck with Joe than Marvel. Heck, back in 2010, Hasbro was offering GI Joe figures for 5.99 (at retail with new sculpts and accessories) while a comparative Star Wars figure was 9.99. A lot of the costs in Marvel and Star Wars can be attributed to the license and profit. But without that license overhead, Hasbro is generally FAR more flexible in what it can offer with its own house brands.
That said, such a figure would probably echo the 25th/ME body design concept and you'd see a good bit of reused parts across the line.

I can guarantee that Hasbro has explored the idea of 6" collector GI Joe line. The problem is that such a line can't survive on its own. Just as what we saw with 25th Anniversary, you'd be apt to see a huge initial drive, only to see interest and sales taper off as a lot of the major players get completed.
Marvel Legends and Star Wars Black largely exist due to the subsidizing done by the "kid stuff". Those 12" Titans and Web shooters and lightsabers largely offset any under performance from the collector segment.

GI Joe doesn't have that. It doesn't have a sufficiently successful product range (well, ANY product range at this point) to justify something so tailored to collectors.

En Sabah Nerd 03-22-2017 02:05 PM

Just to pitch in on price and accessories, not every Star Wars Black Series is lacking here. The Sandtrooper figures have all come with 3 guns and their backpack gear and the original Han Solo came with two guns, an alternate set of hands, and an alternate belt yet these all sold at base msrp. I've never been into G.I.Joe so I don't really know for myself but as others have pointed out the older G.I.Joe toys always had a lot more gear than Star Wars toys in the same scale yet sold for equal or even lower prices.

Edit: Just thought of it but the Marvel Legends Scourge/Demolition Man from the Red Skull BAF wave feels a lot like a 6" G.I.Joe toy. He has a knife, pistol, and shotgun, plus web gear which offers working holsters for the smaller weapons and can also still hold the shotgun too. That's pretty G.I.Joe-ish on its own you just gotta swap the BAF part he came with out for another gun or whatever it is they used to come with. Also then the new Marvel Legends Deadpool came with two katanas, two pistols, a shotgun, a bazooka (with joke boxing glove attachment), some kind of future rifle, an alternate head, and a taco all for base msrp. G.I.Joe could definitely be done in this scale by Hasbro for standard 6" toy price.

hold your horses. the one/12 line just came out from mezco. let it settle but i think it WONT look good cause then it would look like the retro 12" joes but then again, im not really a fan of cloth figs, yet.

doesnt have product range? i disagree. the GI joe line has about the same or more characters than star wars or even marvel

Hasbro is doing a good job with marvel legends, they should continue that with GI Joe in the 6" world. take advantage of the body molds, example: the jim lee punisher looks like a GI Joe and its superb! :) can you imagine a 6" Zartan!

Couldn't have said it better.

The 25th anniversary figures (which were updated versions of the ARAH toy line) had the necessary accessories for each figure like a pistol, a rifle, and a knife. Other figures like may have come with ammo pouches or packs but it was still kinda sparse for many figures. However, starting with the Rise of Cobra and 30th anniversary figures (which were modern interpretations of characters) figures started coming with more weapons and tactical gear. Check out the links below to see the differences between the 25th anniversary Commando Snake Eyes and the Pursuit of Cobra Commando Snake Eyes.

It's more about the types of products than it is character selection. Star Wars has 6" Black Series, 3.75" Black Series, 3.75" 5POA figures, 3.75" scale vehicles, die cast ships, lightsabers, 12" Figures, Masks, etc. If sales in one of these areas dips, then it could be offset by high sales in other areas.

Poison Shadow 03-22-2017 09:31 PM

I'm honestly surprised Hasbro hasn't even tested the waters with a one-off con exclusive, just to gauge interest. Either Duke, Cobra Commander, or Snake Eyes.

But, ultimately they probably don't want more than one Joe toyline on the shelves, and the 3.75" line shouldn't have to die off just for something new to come about.

Dr Kain 03-22-2017 09:44 PM

But the 4 inch Joe line is already dead.

I'm all for a 6 inch GI Joe line provided they based the first versions of each character on their original comic book counterparts. I want Cobra Commander with the awesome coat he appeared in in the first issue.

First it was put on hiatus while The Rock tried to work it into his schedule, but now the plan is a total reboot of the films and the brand as we know it.

GI Joe needs a new hit movie or hit tv show. That is what Hasbro is waiting for.

I think I'd prefer a cartoon series first, then a movie as follow up. The franchise needs to be re-established along it roots. I'm not a big GI Joe guy, but I was a huge GI Joe kid.

They need a new cartoon. The two worst things Hasbro did for GI Joe was never continuing on with Resolute and canceling Renegades. The designs were great and people wanted toys from the cartoons. Unfortunately most cartoons need a toyline to survive and Hasbro isn't putting out any Joes.
