McFarlane Mortal Kombat

Mortal Kombat License Teased by McFarlane Toys

Tomax 02-13-2019 01:01 PM

damn, McF is growing big time........ its gonna be a Storm Collec. VS. McFarlane fight for this franchise.

johnpaul 02-13-2019 01:12 PM

Awesome, now I don't have to look into getting an insanely overpriced storm collectibles scorpion

Comedian 02-13-2019 01:26 PM

Wow! He is coming out swinging. He is really going to have a presence. Again not to bang my same drum.....but in his hay day he had a huge market share for toys. He had all 4 major sports locked down, spawn and other image comics, horror like monsters and tortured souls and movie properties like movie maniacs and many other films....plus military and anime figures. So the man knows how to do this.

My issue is will walmart(which already carries much of his stuff along with target)and target expand in to the actual toy aisles. Where else can he sell? Barnes and noble,Best Buy,Walgreens,GameStop, fye stores super markets? I guess all of the above and more we hope. And of course amazon.

The days of media play, suncoast video and Sam goody are long gone. Along with Kay-bee and toysrus. I think he needs to really look into direct to consumer methods. Starting a collector site like Matty could really work for all involved.

Any way....this is going to be a freaking awesome toyfair. I just hope the other companies bring it like Todd is.

Tokyomeltdown 02-13-2019 01:29 PM

Hopefully we'll see classic MK outfits, don't love the franchise enough to pay Storm's prices.

Tomax 02-13-2019 01:32 PM

now its really an excellent time to be a Collector

True...just one that won't be able to pose properly and will break the first time it falls off the shelf, or the first time you try to move a leg or swap out a body part.

Sorry...I'm not really big on Todd's stuff. I used to collect the 5 inch Walking Dead stuff and some of their REACH Halo figs, but I dumped nearly my entire collection of McFarlane toys a while back because I got tired of dealing with how fragile they were. The Fortnite stuff looks okay, though I've read similar complaints about fragility where the figures are concerned online, (and much of the new articulation, while improved, looks ugly.) While they were one of the originators in high quality sculpts, until they get their **** together with their plastic quality and articulation, they're still a second rate NECA or MEZCO.

Hopefully these new licenses will force Todd to up their game in those areas, but otherwise, I can't find much reason to get excited about this...especially when Storm is hitting it out of the park with the MK stuff. IMO, The only reason I feel people even gripe about Storm to begin with is the import prices (a sour grapes complaint) and the time they take to get the figures out.

EatTheseCracker 02-13-2019 01:51 PM

Trek

Based on the news, I would expect these higher profile IP's to absorb much of McFarlanes resources in bringing to market so if Walking Dead is finished, I cannot imagine Star Trek going far this next year. Maybe Spock but I don't expect anything else. I hope I'm wrong.

nerdyQWERTY 02-13-2019 01:54 PM

Going to be real hard to top what Storm is putting out.

Tomax 02-13-2019 02:03 PM

If anyone can compete with the big figure companies, its going to be McFarlane. he can compete even with the big boys like hasbro, mezco or neca. plus he is a pioneer in the fig industry. and if you dont have (physically) any of his new figs then your comment is INvalid. dont just say: "it looks ok" if you dont even have it in hand...

ludovicotek 02-13-2019 02:22 PM

In. Sane.

Honestly, don't see how they'll be able to improve on the Storm stuff, which is one of the most amazing lines currently going. But, open to seeing what he's got up his sleeve here.

Dolemite 02-13-2019 02:31 PM

Man, so many companies have been taking a stab (heh) at Mortal Kombat figures lately. Jazwares, Mezco, Storm, and now McFarlane.

Augustus_Cole 02-13-2019 02:59 PM

see....now this muhfugga got me HOPING these figs come out correctly.
i'm crossing my fingers and toes for this..

and maybe we'll get more than two characters and different colored ninjas over two years.

I don't know that it's accurate to call NECA or Mezco one of the "big boys." They do great work and collectors love 'em but I feel like a wider shelf presence is required to qualify as one of the big names. Shit, when TRU died there were concerns that collector companies would suffer severely (which they did for awhile) while Hasbro and Mattel took a hit there didn't seem to be that fear of going down with the ship. Back in the day McFarlane did compete with the big boys, I remember Walmarts and Targets having dedicated space in the toy aisles for McFarlane stuff and there were people waiting for stores like KB toys to open just so they could rush in to get the new Spawn stuff.

Bo Ttef 02-13-2019 03:10 PM

Mcfarlane looooves to sculpt- i bet we'll be getting MK 11 style characters from him- all armored up and detailed... and hopefully in the 7in scale he likes so much so they can fit in with my Storm collection.

I'd be down for an MK11 Baraka.

Problem with Storm is that they are very slow from prototype/announcement to release. I am still waiting on Kitana they had prototypes on display almost 2 years ago. Apart from their different colour swap ninjas, the rest of the MK releases have taken a long time.

McF on the other hand is quiet fast, albeit low on quality. But given that we do get a new MK every 4 years with new character designs, Storm seems like a bad bet to hope to collect all the characters for a given entry of the series. In a way, that is probably why Storm has sort of locked their focus onto the Klassic costume designs. That way, they can slowly work on them without any time pressure to have it released before the next entry etc.

Krunomo 02-13-2019 05:30 PM

If they follow the beats of their Fortnite line these could be good, however, as someone nine figures into the Storm Line I hope it doesn't impact their licensing arrangements. While Storm may be slow their figures are awesome. That said, if McFarlane drop some solid figures i'd likely collect both lines.

In terms of speed McFarlane may well be no better than Storm. Those who collect their Borderlands figures are well aware of this. We've got four figures in two years with the fifth and sixth figure having been delayed over six months montns. It would really suck if Storm loses the Mortal Kombat line only for McFarlane to give us a half dozen ninjas in three years.

Why would they be cancelling a line they just started(Star Trek)?

icematta 02-13-2019 06:52 PM

Yeeeeiiiiii......

Excellent, more barely articulated statues.......

Yeeeeeeiiiiii.......

webz 02-13-2019 07:15 PM

Pass for me. I can’t give a penny to McFarlane for personal reasons. For those that like the idea, I’m glad for you!

Purely speculation on my part, but I always assumed there were two types of merchandising contracts (let's call them passive and aggressive). Passive contracts are for things like Friday the 13th, Star Trek, The Walking Dead, etc... and the company doesn't care how much product is put out, as long as it's quality stuff. Aggressive contracts however stipulate that a company HAS to put out a certain amount of product during the time frame that they have a deal in place, which I assume is what DC/WB/Marvel/Disney would have. If that were the case, I could see Todd just letting the rights to Trek and TWD lapse while he diverts attention and resources to the real moneymakers. Again, just speculation on my part!

I was under the impression DST had the master license for 7 inch Star Trek action figures. Was odd when McFarlane rolled theirs out. I was thinking it was only a limited deal of sorts.
