What does "Classic" mean to you?

With the new rumor from rektangle (?) about a full 7 figure wave with the theme "Classic" coming out next year, I am curious about what this means to everyone. What versions of Marvel characters do you consider their classic version? Whats your difference between retro and classic? Which characters classic version do you think still need to get made in the Legends line? Which seven characters are you hoping for?

For me, I feel a lot of characters "classic" versions have been made already. We just got Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor with the Anniversary figures. Both Scarlet Witch figures are styled at least on her classic look. Vision, War Machine, Elektra, Spider-woman, Punisher, Hulk, Quicksilver, Deadpool, Cable, Wolverine all have figures I would consider their classic look. Even though most are not my favorite looks for them I would consider the 90's Jim Lee versions to be most of the X-men's classic looks and if not then their Giant-sized era looks and we have most of those too.

My seven would be:

1. Doctor Strange (Idk which era but none of the ones we have really do the blue tunic yellow gloves look yet.)

2. Crystal (yellow suit. Black hair thingy. Her classic look would fit in very well with the other Inhumans Hasbro have made)

3. Ms. Marvel (asking a lot for 2 female characters in a wave but Carol's original costume deserves to get done too)

4. Graviton (a not yet done classic Avengers villian who only really has one look so that would be to me his classic look)

5. Professor Hulk (Pantheon era brown jumpsuit with glasses. Not what I would consider a classic Hulk look but I would consider it the classic Smart Hulk look)

6. Rick Jones (the classic side kick to Hulk, Captain America, and Mar-vell Captain Marvel!)

7. Baron Mordo (his classic green outfit is awesome and the line could use more Dr.Strange villians)

The BAF (if this wave has one) should definately be Shuma-gorath. Giant eye-ball and lots of tentacles it seems like a unique but straight forward kind of BAF.

My runner up would be Marvel Girl. I didnt include her in the wave because Im certain she would only get made in an X-men themed wave or pack but shes one of the few X-men characters left who hasnt been made in her classic (to me) Giant sized era looks.

I think "classic" is most useful as a way to describe a character's definitive look, the one they keep coming back to, but for a lot of people it's just the look the character had when they first became aware of them, or even just their first appearance. Here's a classic X-Men wave that pulls from each of those definitions.

Angel: definitive outfit with halo on the chest
Banshee: definitive first-appearance/Giant-Size/etc. look
Havok: definitive first-appearance/Outback/etc. look
Longshot: definitive first-appearance/Outback/etc. look
Magik: New Mutants look
Sabretooth: first-appearance/Marauders/etc. look
Shadowcat: Excalibur look
BAF: Blob: definitive jumpsuit with yellow stripe for a belt

Hulkwummy 10-09-2020 08:47 PM

I can only think of three.

Absorbing Man: purple pants
Leader: freehold
Wendigo: long hair, no antlers

MeLikeJinx 10-09-2020 09:17 PM

Not knowing anything about comics... I would say not first appearance... unless their first appearance is their most iconic look. So most iconic appearance that is from the 80's or 90's era if you are talking about Marvel characters.

Dr Kain 10-09-2020 09:42 PM

For me Classic means the most recognizable look that they have had throughout the majority of their comic run.

If you want to take Doctor Strange as an example, it's the blue outfit, red cape, brown gloves, and the Eye of Agamotto around his neck.

For Spider-Man it's obviously going to be the standard red and blue look.

Now X-Men is weird because I consider two designs for most characters to be essential for a lot of characters. It's either between their Cockrum/Byrne designs from Claremont's early run or the cartoon designs that were also technically Jim Lee's.

Fantastic Four will be the blue and black uniforms Jack Kirby gave them.

Morbius is hard because I grew up with his 90s goth look, and I love goth looks, but I kind of like his 70s design as it fits with the classic vampire motiff.

Hobgoblin is going to be his original Romita Jr look.

Doc Ock is the green and yellow suit. Sandman is green and brown pants.

Classic looks to me means the 80’s and below. Kinda like when you hear whitesnake, van halen and billy idol on the classics station on the radio.

Captain Nash 10-16-2020 09:59 AM

Classic is generally their first "long running" design, to me. If a character has an outfit for a couple of appearances but then shows up after that with another new outfit that newer outfit may become their classic design (like FA Wolverine vs. GSXM Wolverine as one example.)

There are exceptions to that if there's a team that all appeared in cohesively similarly designed outfits but later on yet still early in their career develop unique outfits - examples being the original 5 X-Men. None of the yellow black/blue outfits they wore would be considered "classic" to me...too generic.

Also Wasp is a major exception to this as she had a litany of outfits early on. There's not really one look she stuck with overwhelmingly to be considered classic.

Classic is NOT the same to me though as iconic, which would be their best known look. Carol Danvers - Captain Marvel/Ms Marvel for example- the original custom is classic but the black/yellow outfit is what's more iconic to me.

I used to think the same until I started hearing STP, Soundgarden, and Nirvana on the Classic Rock stations...

Classic to me is defined by generation. For example, kids now will probably consider Ironman’s original MCU suit his “classic” look

hasbroherofan 10-16-2020 11:09 AM

There are a number of characters where their classic look is not actually their first appearance.

For instance, most people would think of this as classic Falcon:

But his actual first appearance was this:

Same goes for the original 5 X-Men, Iron Man, and even Captain America and Batman

I really enjoy reading everyone's perspectives. I feel this is exactly why the term classic intrigues me so much in regards to being a potential theme for an entire wave. It has potential to mean a lot of different things. I know I have enjoyed Hasbro touching on so many different eras lately (like retro and AoA) and am glad to see them continuing with it.

warmachine6 10-17-2020 02:12 AM

I'd say classic is similar to iconic a style that won't die out, for example Jim Lee's Art could is a classic style and look for the x-men or x-men animated series 90s

Retro is a style from recent past, though when it comes to my mind i think of 1st apperances.

Classic to me could be the following: Iron man suits , Modular and Extremis , I guess Silver Centurion as well.

It's all subjective

my 7 figures would be:

Doctor Strange blue and red cape (i think he's coming out soon due to see the book of vishanti and darkhold books)

Extremis Iron-man

Modern thor (2006)

Green She-Hulk

Ultimate Captain Mahr Vel

Extremis War-machine

Yellow Jacket

BAF could be Skurge the excutioner

MeLikeJinx 10-17-2020 04:42 PM

I wonder which is considered more classic... late 80's Brown suit Wolverine or early 90's Tiger Stripe Wolverine. The cartoon probably tips it to Tiger Stripe.

For me Wolverine's brown costume is more classic and my prefered color scheme. However, his yellow and blue outfit is probably more iconic and recognizable to more people I would suspect due to, yeah, the cartoon and love for Jim Lee's designs. Classic is such a nebulous term lol.

Nimrod 10-17-2020 08:18 PM

Classic to me defines the "Bronze" age of comics which was like late 60s & the 70s. Majority of the most iconic looks for characters were created during this era. With a few exceptions, the 90s was the worst era for costumes & the 2000s haven't got much to brag about either.

I really really like the brown suit, but the yellow suit is what Wolverine wore Giant Sized through The Dark Phoenix saga, so that is my preferred suit.

Are there specific characters that you all feel still haven't had their classic look made into a Marvel Legends yet? Dr. Strange is the first that comes to my mind.

So like characters Hasbro has done figures of before, but not in their classic look? If so, tons. Dr Strange, Shocker, Lizard, Typhoid Mary, Baron Mordo, Hobgoblin, Falcon, and Banshee, just to name a few.

I would love another Typhiod Mary! I assume you mean her pink outfit with the shoulder pads and huge hair. A must buy for me. Baron Mordo would be great too. I just finished Hulu's Helstrom and would love a classic Daimon Hellstrom too.

And yeah, your list is exactly the type of thing Ive been pondering since the classic rumor hit. I just feel we have a lot of classic versions already (for instance I feel like classic Falcon just got done in the Mister Fixit wave but others may feel like a different look is his classic look) and am curious what versions others are still hoping for or even just which versions people even consider the classic look (such as your Wolverine comments).

The new Retro 3.75 screams classic. Especially in its form factor! Love how the shipping pack feels like a comic yet looks like the classic TSRs

I mean, a classic means forever...When it comes to Classic Games, I'll think of World of Warcraft

Runamuck 02-09-2021 09:00 PM

I originally collected comics in the early 90's, so for me, the character's look during that time would be classic to me.
