And probably a variant in red too? What was the red version about anyway? I've seen it in art from the comics but I don't know the story behind the colour switch.

He set himself on fire trying to kill Batman and when he came out of the water his armor was red. Pretty much it.

It was post Knightfall, I can’t remember the full detail, but I think it had something to do with adding color from his Order of St Dumas uniform.

Azbat was fighting someone, got set on fire and dipped into the water. Then armor was now just randomly red. Later on he made a new helmet as part of how the Batsuit was evolving into an Azrael suit(gauntletts/cape/helmet).

Honestly you can make like 5 -6 figures covering the evolution of the Azbat suit.

EternianJerkian 07-31-2022 09:30 AM

Lol. Cheers, guys. So basically it turned red because it just did. lol. Hm, maybe he painted the suit red originally then realised, crap he's supposed to be Bat-colours, not Azrael colours, then painted over the red with blue but didn't have any more varnish to seal it and so in that fire or water or whatever, that blue paint all got burned/washed off and revealed the red below. Because... um, that's how that works? no? No. Probably not. But still, I feel like from what you peeps just told me, I have just put more thought into it than the writers did. lol.

snake5289 07-31-2022 09:45 AM

I've heard so many people give it shit over the years because of "how 90s" it is but I love the Knightfall suit. Maybe it's because I grew up during those days.

I thought that was the point of it? To poke fun at how 'extreme' a ton of 90s comics were and the popularity of the edgy anti-hero thing. And that the real Batman doesn't need a bulky suit of armour (except for when he actually does require such a thing, of course, like any other device or gadget he uses to take down particular villains). Was that the point of did my brain make up excuses for it? It's been such a long time since I've read comics from that era.

EvilMonkeyPope 07-31-2022 10:37 AM

No, that's right.
I don't like the colors or shoulder pins on this.
Since Todd is on a 90's kick, we he make Artemis as Wonder Woman before regular Diana?

HoovenIV 07-31-2022 10:48 AM

I haven't bit on any of the McFarlane DC stuff, but if he can couple this with a "Death of Superman" wave, I'm all in.

I always believed stories like "Death of Superman" or "Knightfall" were a combination of two things: Pure shock value (the classic hero losing) to turn heads and a chance to establish successors with crazy, rad 90’s designs to lure back the customers that were reading Image Comics-books instead.

Designincase 07-31-2022 01:27 PM

Well Death of Superman was partially motivated by the Lois and Clark TV Show. Cause of the whole wedding thing between the characters.

Knightfall, probably did make some partial fun of it. From the start they showed Jean Paul was off his rocker. Jumping through hoops to explain why Dick didn't take the mantle(ah yes Bruce, leave Tim and Gotham with a guy programmed to be an assassin all because you can't tell Dick you're proud of the guy).

Harbinger 07-31-2022 01:40 PM

I did love the azbat outfits. Hope i can find this.

ronriii 07-31-2022 07:15 PM

Regarding the change from blue to red. When Azrael was fighting the mob and getting fired upon, his suit's paint started chipping off and he looked like he was covered in splotches of red. When the suit's paint fully peeled off due to a fire, it revealed that his armored suit was completely red underneath. No doubt this was done for artistic purposes to differentiate him from Batman during the climax as his "true colors" were revealed.

Pretty much. The reason why the Knightfall Saga succeeded in impressing readers was that Knightfall's story was specifically written to showcase why Batman was better than whatever the 90s wanted him to be. This was further reinforced by Azrael making rash decisions and being more unhinged than Batman.

I dislike this figure. Lack of hand claws and metallics. The Mattel version looks better imo

Dolemite 08-01-2022 07:19 AM

Yeah, I was a fan of the Knightfall armor/storyline, and the armor just magically turned red without any explanation after being set on fire. It was weird.

Also, shouldn't he have belts feeding ammo to his wrist-mounted bat-blade firing thingys? Or are DC characters now not supposed to have anything that even REMOTELY counts as projectile weapons now, as per their Warner Bros. overlords?

If you watched the figure reviews on Youtube, the gold parts are metallic looking. The claws are unpainted but you can easily do it yourself with a silver marker.

Pretty sure the belt fed ones come later on in the arc once he starts making even more mods to the suit? It's been a LONG time since I read it but this version is kind of his "final" version in that arc. There is a series after that where he's in the suit again IIRC but he has a new helmet, belt fed arms, etc. It's a different look for sure and I'd love to see that too at some point.
This is probably the design you remember:
https://www.amazon.com/Universe-Clas.../dp/B003ZX7H0A
It was good but the designers messed up his arms and the spikes all face the wrong way. Fans pointed that out when the prototype was on display at a convention and the crew on site said they knew it was wrong and that was getting fixed prior to production which turned out to be a bold faced lie.

Astro Furby 08-02-2022 04:37 AM

Bah, literally announced as the Mafex version starts shipping out

Runamuck 08-07-2022 02:49 AM

I went on walmart a few days back. I could add it to cart, but then it would say it's sold out or the cart had an error. Then the next day, I went back to the product page and it's sold out. Was there preorders and I just missed out? Or wtf happened. lol

Everything's messed up for their recent DC drops; it took a couple of days to be able to put the entire Super Powers wave into my cart, and at no point have I been able to actually buy any of it. Glitch city for sure.

This happened to me when I was trying to get Ulik. So the website messes up for a few hours before its actually available online. I had even called & been transferred multiple times for people in foreign countries to just say, "IDK" & me thinking, "why can't I be on the phone with someone who actually does know?"

What irritates me is there was no real timeframe here so I didn't even realize the pre-orders were supposed to have happened for this. I'll have to hope I get another chance & it ends up in stores. Like the Lizard.

Designincase 09-11-2022 01:07 PM

So the history with Azbat/Parallax with Walmart

Started showing up in stores in CA. Very few Walmarts in the US at this moment will actually get it.

The links went up online and were actually active BUT

The distribution was wonky.
For very short random spurts, you could get the the figures from whatever Walmart distribution hub they use. And it was random. Like here and there with units of 5 or less in stock.

I got a Parallax ordered that Fedex lost on the day of delivery.

Very unreliable.

The 2nd method was the website pulled from local stores for pickup.
Put in a zipcode and it will try to find one in stock in a certain radius.
The problem was and still is, that if someone buys what's on the floor before they can pull it, the pick up gets cancelled.

It's been an absolute S*** show and I don't know why Walmart won't fix this mess. There was no an official announcement time. Never been any preorders. It's explicitly why "The Hunt" does not work in the age of online shopping.
