Poor Man's Flight Stand

Hey guys. Just a quick, easy tip for displaying figures. All you need is a metal wire hanger,
http://www.istockphoto.com/file_thum...oat-hanger.jpg
a set a pliers (preferably with wire cutters),
http://www.pingree.org/uploaded/Camp...ics/pliers.jpg
a little elbow grease, and some paint if you'd like.

Here's how:

1. Take the hanger and cut off the curved head.
2. Bend the first holding prong to make the first half of the letter "C" that will hold your figure.
3. Bend the first boom arm.
4. Bend the elbow making a < sign.
5. Bend the base. You'll want to make a triangle out of the base for stability. Keep in mind that you want the figure to hang just forward of the center of the triangle for balance.
6. After your done with the base work your way back up twisting the metal around slightly to keep it together. You can actually bend it in such a way that the boom arm can create slight pressure on the figure later on.
7. Bend the last holding prong to finish the letter "C" that will hold your figure.
8. You can paint the Poor Man's Flight Stand to match your display background. You can also paint the holding prongs the figure's color. If your worried about scratching, a little sanding will round off the sharp edges from cutting of the hangers hook. You can also try heat shrink or those colored radio antenna heads.

Have fun and don't hurt your self!

ludovicotek 03-05-2011 03:51 PM

That's ingenuity for ya! Very smart.

"No More Wire Hangers!!!!!!!!"

TheLoudMaster 03-05-2011 04:03 PM

I probably would never have thought of this.

Great idea!

doomboy536 03-05-2011 04:10 PM

I know what I'm doing tomorrow! :D

behindthemask 03-05-2011 04:31 PM

doomboy536 has the same idea as me... might have to make a few of these.. Mind u I probably will break down and buy some from HLJ.com there's some that are round $10 and have 2-3 pegs for multiple figures to fly di:stage Basic Set Clear Ver. $6 for these and u can pose multiple on them and comes with multiple flight stands..

Yea those and the stage act series are great. The problem is finding them in stock. I tried eBay and after a month wait for delivery from over seas... They were lost in shipping! So I said... I'll just make my own. Obviously not as fancy as clear plastic but a much cheaper alternative.

Cavbeast 03-05-2011 07:37 PM

great, now my partner will wonder why I'm going through the closets like a maniac and hoarding all the metal coat hangers...might have to call my mom and dad and go through their closets as well. I should invest in the plastic hangar industry too.

Lol! yea my wife said to me "we have one. metal. hanger. left." I just smiled from ear to ear.

Xcaliber037 03-07-2011 11:27 AM

Let me know how it turns out guys. Any questions feel free to ask.

Symbiote 03-07-2011 02:16 PM

The ones from hlj.com are great. I agree that you have to catch them when they are in stock but they are great. They come with 3 different clasps and the base is big enough to hold bigger figures. They are a bit on the pricey side especially shipping overseas with tracking. I wish there was some local shops that sell these. I also looked around for them at sdcc but to no avail.

nexxone05 03-07-2011 02:31 PM

Good idea. I'm going to have to try this :D

I know it sucks! HLJ has been on "backorder" for months now. I've been looking for the Stage act 3 or 4 locally and all I found was a big fat doughnut. BBTS had them but they're all sold out. I'm worried about trying eBay again after the last fiasco. So for now this will do just fine. If you camo paint them to your background the right way you'll never see them.

behindthemask 03-07-2011 06:43 PM

yeh, I like HLJ, but the exchange rate, and shipping and tracking does add up, you really need to make a bulk order to make it worth while, as a $5 stand will probably end up costing me like $15-20 by the end of it

omega145 03-17-2011 07:05 AM

I like this, good idea and fairly simple to do while being useful at the same time.
Thanks!

Xcaliber037 03-17-2011 06:54 PM

Thanks everyone! I just completed one with the heat shrink around the holding prongs and it works great! I'll post pictures soon.

Xcaliber037 03-20-2011 11:18 AM

Heat shrink rocks! And it comes in many colors!

nice pics man, and like the use of the heat shrink tape.. nice idea, if someone wanted to they could use sculpy clay for the base and get a name plate made haha!

Superquad7 03-30-2011 02:08 AM

This is really excellent!

Also, I thought I'd give you some dual exposure over at TFW2005.com: Customs: Poor Man's Flight Stand by Xcaliber037 - TFW2005 - The 2005 Boards

doomboy536 04-02-2011 03:20 PM

I finally found the time to do this, and it looks awesome!

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...6/IMG_4341.jpg

Also being in Bolivia and not having any sandpaper, I improvised and used sellotape. Works like a charm :D

Xcaliber037 04-07-2011 08:37 PM

Thanks for the exposure supersquad!

I'm glad it worked out for you doomboy!

I'm going to test to see what is the heaviest transformer it'll hold then take pictures.

supersquads and superquad7 both thank you :)

1987olds442 06-18-2011 05:25 AM

This is a very cool idea, and adding the heat shrink is a nice touch. Now I know what I can do with all the extra hangers that I have :D

Xcaliber037 06-22-2011 01:33 PM

Thanks! One of these days I'll get on taking pics of it holding something heavier. It should hold a voyager class no prob depending on the type hanger you use.

deadpool 08-30-2011 12:02 AM

Awesome. What nightcrawler is that, Is it custom?
