Toy Discussion Of The Week - Classic Toys Reborn

Joe Moore 07-19-2009 08:01 AM

I'll start it off....

Thundercats

A reimagining of this toy line is long, long overdue. It's a perfect toy line to capture kids interests again, and with the right company behind it, they could be fantastic toys. The characters are still really cool looking, in a retro sort of way. But imagine a more modern take on guys like Mum-Ra or Lion-O. I'd even be happy if we got some high end collectible figures out of it, maybe by Hot Toys. But it just seems that every time you hear about a new Thundercats, something falls through.

alien Commander 07-19-2009 08:42 AM

It was really damn cool series in 80's age...!!!

BigD350Z 07-19-2009 08:51 AM

Agreed! I would love to see the Thundercats re-released in the same style as the MOTU Classics. That would be awesome!

MegaPrime33 07-19-2009 09:59 AM

I love the show and the toyline. I was envious of my friend who had the cat's lair and the thundertank. It would definitely be the top of my list of toylines to be redone.

Enigma2K2 07-19-2009 10:14 AM

Plus look at what they did with MOTU... this is a no brainer...

I really can't come up with one that qualifies, as either the ones I think of HAVE been brought back, or shrunk to 3.75 inches. I would, however, KILL for a cartoon accurate Mighty Orbots figure.

ghostdog0081 07-19-2009 10:24 AM

I would love to see Thundercats! I would also like to see M.A.S.K make a comeback. The transformers Human Alliance series would be the perfect scale and articulation in the figs.....also being Native myself I've always been down with Bravestarr....although not many people remember him

acave720 07-19-2009 11:00 AM

From what I understood was that Mattel and The Four Horseman are going to do the thundercats in the same way as the Masters line.

ludovicotek 07-19-2009 11:07 AM

Thundercats is easily at the top of the list for me, too. As already mentioned in this thread, they should be done in the same style as MOTU Classics: Sculpts based on the original figures updated to today's articulation standards. Who would not buy these?

If the Thundercats proved to be successful, I would love me some updated Silverhawks.

Also already mentioned, M.A.S.K. would be perfect. Matt Trakker already made an appearance in the G.I. Joe line. And with Transformers being super-popular again a toy line with transforming vehicles where characters can actually sit inside them would be awesome. Hasbro can do them in the same exact style as the Joes.

And how about Sky Commanders. Again, just do them in the same manner as modern era G.I. Joes. Each figure comes with their own transport vehicle just like the originals.

ghostdog0081 mentioned Bravestarr. I actually liked this line and cartoon. I think that all the Filmation series could work in the same style as MOTUC. Ghostbusters, not the Real Ghostbusters, would be really cool, too!

And while we're at it, how about Defenders of the Earth. These I would actually like to be done in 1:18 scale. I always liked the Phantom character. The cartoon was fun. Not really many characters to make but I would gladly add them to my Joe/Marvel universe.

Da_Last_2_Walk 07-19-2009 11:24 AM

Hasbro needs to bring back the.....

Visionaries

The Visionaries were bad ass because the toys had holograms on them. Each knight had a special totem that represented their attributes. I liked how the knights had to say a magic chant for the powers in their staffs to work. There were also some cool vehicles made for the figures. To top it off, there was a 13 episode cartoon that was on hit.

Are you talking about the group with the large APE ghostbuster? I vaguley remember them as a young child.. way before Egon, Winston, etc etc..

They had cartoons, then I remember a LIVE 1/2 hour show they did, with someone dressed as the ape...

as a kid, I truly loved the concept... as an adult, I might think it may be retarded if I saw it (if not for remembering it as a child though)

ludovicotek 07-19-2009 12:30 PM

@ DL2W - Awesome call on the Visionaries. I loved the cartoon, though short lived, and the toys. I still have some of the comics. Awesome toys. They would fit perfectly in with the Joes.

@ STLHBkid - Yup. That's the Ghostbusters I'm talking about. It was originally the live action show. They turned it into a cartoon after the Ghostbusters movie was a smash. It's also the reason why the cartoon based on the movie is called The Real Ghostbusters, cause they couldn't just use Ghostbusters and they wanted to pretty much diss them for trying to ride their coat tales.

How about Dino Riders. Anybody remember them? A lot of the characters in the cartoon were the same voices as G.I. Joes and Transformers characters.

Basically, a group of good guys crash land on a prehistoric planet with Dinosaurs still flourishing. They are followed by a group of baddies. The good guys befriend some dinos and use them for transportation and fighting. The bad guy control their dinos with a mental band. Very cool concept. Great cartoon and great toys.

Thanks bro!

Damn, I forgot there was a comic also!

scarecrow 07-19-2009 01:12 PM

I would like to see super-articulated Bucky O'Hare toys.

I still have my Blinkie the Robot toy from back when I was a kid.. An update would rock.

AutobotAssassin 07-19-2009 01:24 PM

I was just thinking about Thundercats and Silverhawks making a return. I've been watching the cartoons on youtube. those 2, MOTU, GIJOE, Transformers, and TMNT are what made my childhood.

Everyone loves military action figures!
Everyone loves food!
Everyone loves puns!
It's time for the return of Food Fighters!

Talk about an obscure toy line. I had a whole bunch of the Food Fighters. If memory serves, the good guys had green clothing, what little bits there were, and the bad guys were in black. I loved them!!!! I also remember seeing them a few years after I stopped buying them at local food supermarkets like Winn Dixie but they were repainted with more florescent colors. Don't ask me why.

trebleshot 07-19-2009 08:21 PM

All of these are really great picks. I was hard-pressed to think of any others to add.

Although I would love to see the Four Horsemen tackle Thundercats, I wonder what they'd look like if McFarlane Toys got the license?

EDIT: A couple other lines I'd like to see redone are Inhumaniods and Silverhawks.

Gutsman Heavy 07-19-2009 09:12 PM

I second Dino Riders!

I'd like to see Street Sharks return. Probably the most unoriginal toyline/cartoon ever!

I agree what you say Street Sharks, but did you mean to say unoriginal?!

My favorite one was the one that wore a hockey mask, and then the Electric Eel.

Flying Fighters

One of the most innovative military aircraft toylines ever made! Hasbro made this in the 80's and there has been nothing like it since(I suspect the KB exclusive Tomcats in 3 color schemes with noselights were licensed derivatives as opposed to bootlegs, if anyone remembers them from the early 90's).

Anyways, the planes were about 1/48 scale, had removable joysticks, swappable weaponry, stickers for both regular squadrons AND aggressor squadrons, posters, squadron patches, and removable pilots. Very durable toys and a good selection, all of the "teen" fighters and the Apache helicopter were made.

Anyways Hasbro has PDF instructions for these toys on their site. It's a line that I'd LOVE to see return to the aisles. I have fond memories of taking my F-14 Sundowners Tomcat everywhere I went after I got it as a gift.

SMARTASS8 07-19-2009 09:51 PM

Thundercats; but could they think up actual names for the Mutants this time? Except for Slithe, they were all named after their race. Whatever toy exec named them must have been lazy as hell. They make the names of the Master Of The Universe characters sound down right ingenious.

Maxx Steele & The Robo Force; I thought this was such a cool line of toys that died before the second wave ever made it past pre-production.

Gobots; this will never see the light of day since the asses at Hasbro have the rights after buying up Tonka. Now that Transformers is basically dead to me after decades of crap cartoons and 2 of the worst "popular" movies I've ever seen, I'd like to see a line of transforming robots that doesn't turn my stomach.

Mantech; I only had one of these figures and Centurions are remembered much more fondly, but I loved the 4 issue comic Archie made of these guys.

Blackstar, BraveStarr, Crystar, & Sectaurs; cool looks but the toys never realized their potential.

I'd also like to join in on requesting Filmation's Ghostbusters. They made not of had the strong writing or a big toy company like Kenner behind them(RIP) as the Real Ghostbusters did, but they had a great mix of characters with some really fun designs.
