DCUC: End of an Era

We've got wishlist threads, we've got threads to discuss upcoming figures, but I haven't seen any threads to discuss the line as it is. And with the line coming to an end, mayhaps the memories.

So, what do you feel they've done right with this line, and what did they do wrong?

I think one of the things they did really right, was trying to fix mistakes they made along the way, by reissuing fan desired and rare figures. Specifically with the height corrected TRU exclusive Sinestro, and the full retail Sinestro Corps Sinestro in wave 20, as well as the entire Allstar line.

What they've done wrong I feel is to blatantly ignore major players. such as Wally West. Seriously, Barry Allen has had four or five separate releases through this line... and one of them uses an entirely different mold (Bulkier and more muscular). Would it have really been THAT hard to have made one of them Wally? All they'd really need to do to appease us is change his belt design. Sure we would all prefer a lankier, double jointed mold like corrected Sinestro, but that's not 100% nessisary.
The other downside to the line are the women. Specifically, the sculpting. I look at various females in the DC Direct lines, and I look at the amazing sculpts on the male DCUC figures, and wonder why the female DCUC figures can't be even close to that.

But overall... my complaints with this line are very few compaired to what I love about it. I'm glad that it lives on in spirit, and the mold style will carry on as well, but this has been my favorite toyline since Beast Wars, and I haven't looked so forward to new action figures since the pre Marvel Legend toybiz days.

BTW... does Iron look like Christopher Judge to anyone else?

ToyAddict 11-22-2011 07:21 PM

I think you mean Iron looks like Christopher Judge -- in that episode where Vala tries to convince Martin to produce "her life story" which turned out to be the Wizard of Oz.

Anyhow, great toyline. . .I got darn near EVERY figure I wanted as a kid (I was a big Super Friends fan, so I was real happy with wave 18). Just need a few more of the prominent missing Bat-villians and I'll be set. Hopefully they'll be released in the new DCAS or in CIE.

Still for all that. . .if they released this many characters in a good 3.75" scale (or better, to complete the Super Powers collection) I'd sell them all. I feel like they are too expensive to let my kids play with. And they need vehicles.

CMIII 11-22-2011 08:21 PM

I am sad to see the line end. The Collect and Connects were nice though many of the more well known were left out but yet some of the C&C's were obscure ones. As for the figures not included your dead on they did not include some of the Biggest Players in the DCU (Wally Wast, Freddy Freeman, Uncle Sam, Guy Gardner {only in a 5 pack}, Supergirl {Only in a 2 pack}, and so many others).

nakobass 11-22-2011 10:02 PM

I just got into the DCUC Line, now it's coming to an end. Where will the new figures come from? I really want a DC Universe Red Hood.

Fortune 11-23-2011 12:43 AM

What they did wrong was ignoring a lot of modern characters while doing so many classics. What they did right was giving us so many classics while not being strictly modern characters.

You're right, I ment Iron... Mercury reminds me of someone too, and I was trying to place him when I was trying to type out Iron/Judge. Fixed.

Also, I too would love a really good 3.3/4" line. I don't think I'd sell my DCUC collection, but I'd scale way back on new 6".

I gotta say... aside from Wally West, I wouldn't say anyone you mentioned is a DC heavyweight character. Gardner we got in the fivepack so we got him and he counts. Supergirl we got in DCSH and a rerelease in as the twopack you mentioned. Freddy Freeman and Uncle Sam are pretty obscure.
Aside from Wally, we got every main character I can think of, and the majority of the second stringers.

it is bad news that this line is gone. but for me it was gone with the last 2 waves. 1st time i NEVER picked up a new dc fig. with the exception of captain boomerang whish i used for a custom right out the package. the one big thing i was holding onto but now i know its never going to happen is a CnC doomsday. how then could ignore the only villin to "kill" superman i'll never know.

I so agree with you . when they did the Batman wave with C&C bane , I was expect to see a superman wave with Doomdays. but that never happen . that would be awesome to get a wave of other member of superman. , like mon-el, Zod , ursa, Atlas , louis Lane, and other

I wished they would of give us , Barry Allen just update the flash mask to make him .

I don't see the line as ending.

It is continuing under at least 2 different other names IMO.

True, but Club Infinite Earths will have over sized figures thus replacing the need for CnC.

Plus, there will be Legacy figs for Rises and Man Of Steel I bet, so we'll be getting 6" DC figs for the foreseeable future I think.

Dont think it will happen anytime soon as they are now onto DCNU. I dont think Red Hood is planned in that line. i have been waiting for him for a while now with no luck from Mattel. So I had one custom made a month ago and here will be he next week. Many Pics will be posted. I cant wait.

felks22us 11-23-2011 07:52 PM

still want a C&C Doomdays . Mattel can we get him...........................

I did specifically say the type of figures are not ending. I specifically said it was the line itself. In that vien, yes, DC Universe Classics is coming to an end.

Not going to miss it, it really isn't going anywhere. Having it "end" was just a way to do an online sub. We are getting quality figures coming to retail under a new name, like Larfleeze and a new Batman Beyond. So to me, Mattel pretty much ruined the name Dc Universe Classics for me, all I think about is how they tricked everyone to think it was the end of all figures.

Me Too. Tired of waiting so I am getting one built along with Black Mask and Red Rocket 07. These figures are a must for the DC Universe as a whole why they werent made is just astonishing.

Tiberius 11-23-2011 08:19 PM

Mattel MAY release an oversized one with the subscription. If they don't...then...wow...uhhhhhhhh I'd feel bad for people who put their trust in Mattel.

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL 'Trust in Mattel' seems so unrealistic.

I have been let down way to much by Mattel to put any more trust in them.

Crazy Jetty 11-23-2011 09:12 PM

May we go back on topic a little while longer before the inevitable derailment? What mattel may or may not do is not really relevent to the subject.

I feel this subject is valid enough to last a while longer before it goes off track.

Im hopping that the online wave would do good but we got to see right . just hope they would use the new joints on them . I would not mind buying some of the character with newer joints . double hing elbow and knees would be nice to have on new figures . dont everyone agree with that .

I so want as well are the last 3 members of JLI , Red Rocket, Fire and Ice . Mattel Can you give use them single or a 3 pack would be awesome.

Ok...I dont understand why we would want double hinged elbows and knees? Last I checked I dont have double hinged elbows and knees? Thats just giving way too much to a figure. Mine as well make them out of rubber so they can bend any way you want. To me thats just way to much. Its giving joints that in all reality dont exist.

CMIII 11-25-2011 01:14 AM

I will say I saw a White Lantern Flash in wave 20 and it looks very, very cool. As for Freddy Freeman (Captain Marvel Jr) being obscure I disagree I bet if you put them up against some of the figures released (Golden Pharoah and Cyclatron) you'd get a who compared to some of the ones never released. I meantiond Golden Pharoah to a 40 year DC Comic fan and he never even heard of him, where as CMIII is pretty well known. I think even wave 19's Magog is fairly obscure unless you read Kingdome Come.

I don't know whay you're thinking, but I think you're under the impression that he's talking about knees and elbows going backwards too? He's not. He's talking about the double joints that are seen on a lot of the newer DCUC figures, like Black Lantern Abin Sur, Modern Blue Beetle, Mercury, Captain Boomerang, and all the MU knees.
I don't know how this equates to rubber or inappropriate articulation, because it gives them almost a full range of human motion, where as the standard knee and elbow joints seen on Hal Jordan, Superman, or Batman only really allow for ninty degree movement before the sculpt stops them.

On the contrary, Magog was a relatively high profile character up through Brightest Day. He had his own 12 issue series in 2009/2010, was featured in the Justice Society books, and popped up here and there elsewhere as well. Not top tier, but he's been spotlighted in recent years.

It seemed like DCUC had finally caught up with the backlog of the bazillion must-have characters enough that they could actually focus on recent comic event stuff, like all the Lantern figures they've been doing. That may be why they're transitioning to All Stars, so they can continue that pattern.

Someone mentioned Captain Marvel Jr.... he's just about the only other semi-major character I can imagine them doing using the base sculpt they'd need to do a Damien Wayne Robin. There really aren't many preteen heroes/villains in the DCU, are there?
