Does Dust Actually Damage Figures?

Sorry if this is a stupid question but does dust do any damage to figures?

Of course dusty figures look bad but I was curious if there's any potential damage?

I've got a very large MU display that needs dusting, my Iron Man armory is also getting covered in cat hair. :(

If figures are left on a shelf ,lets say it's more exposed to the elements of dust, sun damage ,moisture etc, dust can collect and sometimes if you go to whipe you maybe whiping off the finish of the paint or spots could chip, your best bet is to invest in an incloser. If your collection is small this can be anything from a fishtank to a displaycase suitable for a football/model car/basketball. If your collection is big or growing, look at ikea they have some sweet display stands for like $100-300 range.

I hope not or I am FUCKED.

Jason Abbadon 12-06-2011 11:37 PM

Dust does nothing- my old Secret Wars figs have been washed off with soapy ater many time and they're still fine.
Dust is mostly dirt and skin particles, pet dander, etc- nothing that hurts plastic.

Xcaliber037 12-07-2011 02:54 AM

Not sure if dust does damage but it's a tell tell sign. There's other elements that come into play when things sit for a while like humidity and ol' father time. A good dusting and wipe from greasy fingers doesn't do any harm. Sunlight is the big culprit.

miketime 12-07-2011 05:53 AM

I agree Sunlight and air are the bigger problems. I've seen my bright white Stormshadows and Snowjobs turn yellow for no reason other than exposure to air, even though they were away in controled storage. Fading and sun spots are also a big concern with me. I try to keep all of my shelves away from driect sun light and always have my shades drawn.

If your biggest problem is dust, Transformers are the worst to keep clean IMO. Ikea offers a cheap solution but I don't think it is air tight. My apt gets dusty but I have not noticed a build up on my collection like in my sig. Good luck with your war on dust.

bmorr 12-07-2011 06:42 AM

becasue of the sun have i half white, I have a half yellowed x wing, because i displayed it in the same place for like 15 years....that parts my own fault. But yeah dust cant do anything.

I think you should dust just to be sure.

Optimus Vader 12-07-2011 08:21 AM

Dust is for chumps! Stay in school, kids!

CLASSIFIED 12-07-2011 09:16 AM

I don't think dust dammages toys, but if the dust builds up, then the steps you take to clean the dust off may in fact dammage your toys.

Better safe than sorry.

I noticed a lot of dust on my top shelf Joe vehicles and had a little panic attack.

mikefavata 12-07-2011 12:20 PM

I'm using a DVD cabinet for my MU figs, about 8 shelves. Moved a box and noticed the bottom shelf (Iron Man armory) is pretty much covered in cat hair. Who knew my cat would be able to shutdown all of Stark's armors.

mikefavata 12-07-2011 12:21 PM

I'm kind've thinkin' of going with the APEX displays that Smalljoes sells, anyone here use 'em?

mikefavata 12-07-2011 12:31 PM

After readin' online, I think i'm gonna go with the Ikea Detolf cabinet and the Apex stands.

for me, i dont worry about dust. if i play with all my figures, i don't get dust. after all, toys are to be played with and photographed. even when i was deployed in Afghanistan, when we fired off powerful artillery rounds that shook everything, dust was never an issue.

for me the issue is the cold air expanding and sticking to said joints. after a while plastic becomes too brittle and breaks. even the best plastic joints like on marvel legends and DCUC stuff turns to crap like threeA vinyl joints.

This is some really good advice. I'm going to have to make sure I deploy some of my dustier Joe vehicles ASAP.

Got this link from TFW. Looks like there's a lot of options for displaying.
