DC 3 3/4" line
 

This has been something that has been discussed a lot. Why doesn't Mattel have a DC line in this scale. its very popular, we have lines like GI Joe, Marvel, Star Wars, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat ect. yet DC is oddly absent. I think that should change. It could be a great way to promote the "New 52" by filling the line with new costumes and characters with a few oldies sprinkled in.

They did, and then abruptly canceled it.

if Mattel could fullfill decent paint and articulation like marvel has achieved now with MU, and deliver core guys imediatly in the first wave to get the retail stores and children into it, then they could make a good line

but the thing is, Green Lantern toys sucked, and the Infinite Heroes line failed to do all of that.

I mean, the first set was Black Adam, Hush, Black Hand, a Manhunter Robot, Adam Strange, Captain Shazam Marvel, Guy Gardner, and a Qwardian Weaponer. What kid knows these characters? I know I didnt know them untill I was around 10 years old and started reading DC. and even then, I tossed them aside cause I wanted Batman and Superman. not to mention I never saw any of them on the super powers or super friends.

so yeah, they fudged it. big time. next time Mattel tries a 3 3/4 dc line, first wave needs to have a combination top names and semi top names. Should be Batman, Superman, Joker, Parasite, Captain Shazam Marvel, and John Stewart.

Theres a good mix of well known with Supes Bats and Joker, then you get Parasite and Captain Marvel and John Stewart, and if your a kid and havent seen justice league since CN refuses to bring it back on TV, you would know half of those characters. beef it up with a Black Adam and Bizarro varient to Supes and Shazam and you got a good starting wave.

You have a point, that wave was clearly intended for adult collectors, not kids looking for toys.

yeah. if your gonna make a toyline thats 3 and 3/4 and sell it in retail stores with starwars and transformers and gijoe and marvel, you have to try to appeal to the kids first with more well known characters to get your foot in place. then fill it with obscure while giving major ones. its what MU and SW does all the time!

you got a wave with Vader and Kenobi, but also with Dengar, and R5 unit and Hammerhead. you got a wave with Wolverine but you also got a wave with Mystique, Captain Britain, and Multiple Man

yeah i agree with you all . they did try it a long time ago . but they lack articulation so much and the paint apps were bad to say . see that why MU step it up so much , but I wont be getting them tho . I still collect G.I.Joes ( if i could ever find them ) and star wars the Clone Wars . So it would be nice to se everyone been going that way with 3 3/4 figures . but mattel seem to go so slow on that department ..

I think we'll hear this is happening at Toy Fair. There's been WAY too much talk here and other boards. Actually to clarify I expect we'll hear about quality 3 3/4 toys for Dark Knight and Man of Steel which would then be followed by a Justice leauge line. The younf Justice line shows they have interest in the scale.

As do the unannounced GL:TAS line.

I still say I want them to finish the Super Powers line. Every character that appeared in the Justice League Unlimited cartoon, any of the DC Animated movies, the upcoming GL cartoon, the rest of the Super Friends. . . with action gimmick. AND articulation.

Kinda like Jakks Pacific did with Narnia toys. (Except Jakks distribution on those was the expected-from-a-movie-toyline-because-retailers-overorder-the-first-wave-so-later-waves-are-impossible-to-find kind of bad. We can't have that with DC. The original DCUC wave 5 distribution problem was bad enough.

Last I knew Mattel had been doing DC figures in this scale for quite some time (though it's usually referred to as 4", rather than 3-3/4"). Still, it would be great to see them advance their take on this scale a bit. They've been stuck back in the ninety's with Kenner's articulation, and even some of those were better than what Mattel's been doing lately. On the other hand, I honestly think that Hasbro has added TOO much articulation to their figures in this scale. After a certain point it's just too much movement for the size of the figures, and the more it affects the overall aesthetic of them. In the end, I'd rather have a good looking statue then a gangly looking puzzle.

I'm looking forward to seeing what they'll be offering for the TDKR toy-line, which we should be getting our first look at from Toy Fair. Hopefully any advancements they make with this line get carried over to next year's SMoS toy-line. While I'm remaining hopeful that they'll have finally learned their lesson, I'm not really expecting any big changes from what we've seen from them in the past.

What little we've seen of the GLTAS toy-line seems to be taking a step backwards in the case of articulation. I was hoping that, with the addition of waist and elbow articulation in the Brave & Bold line that they were finally past the five-point articulation standard they seem to love so much (then again, Young Justice continued that trend...). I just hope that the failure that was last year's GL movie toy-line doesn't have too much of a negative affect on this line. The more I think about it, the more I think that Mattel might not be lying about the lack of retailer interest...

Both are a bit far off, but I'm looking forward to seeing what Mattel will be offering for their SMoS and Beware the Batman toy-lines next year. Like I said before, I hope that any advancements made this next year carry over to next year's offerings. If not, than I hope they continue to make 6" scaled figures to sell alongside their 4" scaled figures.

The Young Justice line is NOT the same scale. It is JLU scale. 5 inch! Kids are of course smaller 4.25 inch.

The sad thing is there are a LOAD of DC characters i'd love to own, (first and foremost BIZARRO!!!) And to be fair to them,a lot of the sculpts on the Infinite Heroes were great,they just let down by poor paint+articulation,im all for as many 3.75 lines as possible,so if new lines are announced at ToyFair lets hope Mattel step up,and give us a line that DC's great characters deserve!!

You know honestly, if they made a articulated DC line that could compete with MU I would be happy just to get the original 7 Justice League Members, and maybe Zatanna.

I had no problems with the infinite heroes articulation. I thought they were awesome and I'm trying to get 100% complete on every figure/variant released.

The big problem with IH was they were designed with *kids in mind* as said many times by Mattel, but *priced as collectibles*. Mattel saw that Marvel money and wanted in badly and rushed it.

In an old "action figure insider" interview one of the guys from that site mentioned that the first wave was all no-names because the cheepo factory they used messed up, and rather than hold stock until the big guns like Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman were ready to ship, they wanted to keep their "street dates" and not delay the line.

"street dates" are marketing & PRs best friends, it lets them put off their jobs until the last minute, get guarantees from press, and generally make it look like they're doing their job, even when they aren't. There's a huge culture of "success right away or nothing at all" in PR and this really has to do with these companies. It allows a lot of corruption and laziness, and generally a bunch of people getting paid a lot of money to do next to nothing. I feel they're hurting not just toys but the world we live in, in general.

Funny thing is IH was not the failure you'd think it was financially. They were a huge success at discount stores when sold in the $3-5 range, which is what would have been the right price point to begin with. The mattel folks obviously saw that they would jack up the DCUC prices and collectors would still buy em, so why not start that right out of the gate? *that's* what killed IH. Remember these were a good $1-2 more than MU or Star Wars were at the time. (and think about what they all cost now?!?! how many price increases can the hobby sustain before no one buys anymore? doubled in price in 6 years that's madness)

Mattel's got to figure out what they want to do, whether they want to collector's toys, or kid's action figures, or both. Because they only offer collector's figures across the board now. They're either too expensive or so popular with adults you can't find a regular batman or superman for kids, which is the "spark" that gets them to want the others. You want to sell it to kids make it affordable. If it means doing Infinite Heroes type articulation then so be it (i'm not convinced that the extra cost is true by any stretch... i think they know we are gullible after MOTUC and will overcharge us because they know we'll still buy, see MU as a prime example)

I would kill for a new IH line, I know many parents that would too:
- using the 4 horsemen DCUC maquette sculpts (or new ones from them!), some basic articulation, and solid QC.
- A good even size (no 10' tall wolverines :p)
- Do an even mix of DCnU and old school. Make 1st appearances! golden/silver age! earth 2! box sets of teams! Make movie figures!
- keep the b-listers like mr. terriffic where they belong, on the b-list.
- Your PR folks will need chase figures to talk to press about, make them cool packaging variants so kids can actually have a chance at the a-listers they love (it'll keep the graphic design people at Mattel happy.)
- Complete teams, save money by using the 4H sculpts from DCUC and make everyone happy.

I would pay $7.99+ for those. I'd pay $9.99 if they were really well made with *good QC.* 1:18 is always popular and they're letting money slip through their fingers... they just need to make toys that don't break!

I really liked the infinite heroes line. My main complaint would be that weapons are not removable.

I actually liked the DCIH line. Sure they aren't nearly as great as the MU line (currently my favorite toy line and the standard by which most lines seem to be judged around here), and they had some serious price point and marketing failures, but for what they were they weren't half bad. Especially at the end the articulation and sculpts were getting way better. Here's a shot of my DC 3 3/4" collection (hard to see the single pack figs):

To me some of the highlights are Hawkman, Martian Manhunter, Deathstroke, the Starro the Conqueror exclusive set, and the better articulated Superman and Batman from the Public Enemies sets.

And while the Green Lantern 3 3/4" movie line had serious faults, I did pick up all of the aliens to fill out my 3 3/4" GL Corps:

If Mattel would do another decent 3 3/4" - 4" DC line I'm sure they'd get some of my money.

They didn't really come with any accessories.

I *loved* the DCIH. I started collecting those before the DCUC. What killed me was unavailability. I almost *never* found anyone I wanted/needed. Dozens of the ones spoken about in this thread, I never saw. (Complete absolute dumbest of luck I stumbled across Question!)
It was because I never found anything beyond the first couple waves (And never any of the "good" ones out of those), that I jumped full scale into DCUC.

I hated the last set of molds though. I did find a few of them (But again, never any one I wanted)

yeah when the style changed, and that stupid contest for the Anti-Monitor (it felt pretty rigged IMO) I stopped for the most part. And the Aquaman as an exclusive was the bullet point for me to stop. All I really wanted was a jumbo anti-monitor and aquaman...

Now however I am trying to get complete on the line.

Sorry but I didn't know who to ask this, but does anyone have the articulated batman? The I realllly want a bats for my collection, I just don't want the original DCIH, with the legs and all, if anyone has PM me It would be very appreciative :)
