ULTIMATES - Did it get better when Loeb left?
I skimmed through Ultimates vol 3 and was horribly disappointed. I thought it was the worst thing to happen to Ultimates and I stopped reading the title since then. Ultimate Hawkeye looked awesome in there and it was cool to see Joe Mad return(though I wasn't a fan of the route they took with coloring over his pencils...washed out a lot of his pencil work and looked muddy).
So I heard awhile back Millar returned to the title but I don't know if he's still on or what. Did Millar bring it back to being good or what? |
Ya vol 3 sucked, that's the one with the Black Ops team if I remember correct? I stopped after that.

yea 3 and ultimatum actually made me stop most of my comic collecting, now i just hit books a million when the put the trades on sale and pic up whole stories. takes longer but its cheaper for me and since there no comic shops in my area it just works out better.

Utlimates 3 was awful, but I hung in there. Ultimatum was awful, but I decided to stick with it a little longer. But the Ghost Rider storyline and the whole Ultimates vs. Avengers thing just killed it all together. I hear good things about the new Ultimates series, but I just can't bring myself to check it out. Maybe when they release it in trade paperback.

Ultimates and Ultimates 2 were amazing. I enjoyed some of the "Death of Spider-Man" stuff. I do hear the new series is much better than what we had been getting.

Ultimates vs Avengers...wait I thought the Avengers WERE the Ultimates? WTF? |
I don't know if it was around the same time frame that Loeb's son died or how long after, but yeah he wrote Ultimatum too. It's like his personal suffering was directed entirely into the destruction of the Ultimate Universe so we could all feel his pain. Oh his pain was felt alright. So much that I don't read anything he writes anymore. Poor guy.

Iirc after his son's death, fans 1st took notice of a decline in quality on his Superman/Batman runs. |

Daredevil: Yellow was in 2001 and Superman/Batman was in 2003. Both of which were years before his son died. But Sam was diagnosed with bone cancer in 2002 and that's probably the reason for the "decline".
As to the original question, haven't read anything on Ultimates after Vol. 3. In fact, that's pretty much when I stopped buying/reading comics in general. I still read synopses and try to keep track of major stories/events but that's about it. One of the many things I gave up when I became a father, and I don't regret it in the slightest. |
