Avengers Assemble

couldnt help myself pick up this title. Although through three issues, I am finding it a little cheesy as Thanos just pops up! I mean, I know they have to make him relevant and known as most people in the theatre didnt know who it was at the end...

whatever, anyone else reading this title? what do you think?

Greenskar 05-12-2012 08:59 PM

Grabbed the first issue...dropped it immediately after. Anyone looking for a great Avengers book should stay away from this one, IMO. This book claims in continuity but has thus far ignored any of the character development currently existing for each member of this team in 616 Universe.

Exodus 05-12-2012 09:15 PM

Probably put it out cause of the Avenger's movie trying to milk it.

shortysben 05-12-2012 10:12 PM

Yeah I agree, but I do really like Bendis...

Not only is craptackular, it has stuff like "AN Ultimate Nullifier"- there's only ONE of those. It's kind of the whole point, actually.
And another pointless and soon-to-be-forgotten Zodiac Cartel introduced- they never explained the one from the Busiek run of Avengers, then had that stupid Zodiac character kill the members of the original Zodiac Cartlel- that hack writer aparantly not getting that they were already killed 20 years prior in West Coast Avengers....

Marvel really sucks with their internal contunity. Aparantly they job of "Editor" has come to mean "cheerleader" and only a select few great writers (Hickaman, Brubaker, D&A, Waid, etc.) bother to read older stories concerning the characters they are writing.
When it comes to Bendis, they give him a pass on even plot-critical stuff, like how Black Bolt had the SPACE gem and Tony the REALITY gem in Illumaniti miniseries- which was freakin written by Bendis to for pete's sake- and they still based an entire six issue storyline of Avengers around it being the other way around!

I guess Marvel doesn't actually want readers to care about this Universe they created? Instead, when they get called out, they tell their readers to "grow up". Stay classy, Marvel.

Jason Abbadon 05-13-2012 01:16 AM

Well, that's Stephen Wacker that does that crap- pretty mature of him, right?

bmorr 05-13-2012 05:39 AM

this book is only a cash grab for new or gullible readers. No one is going to remember this story in like four months.

shortysben 05-13-2012 05:03 PM

Well you all have made me feel like I am a laughing stock for buying this...

Jason Abbadon 05-13-2012 05:15 PM

Hey, I did not buy it but I read my roomate's- blew some time on that which I'll never get back.
One day I'll be an invalid in some nursing home and I'll curse the day I read even one of those issues insted or going outside in the sun or jerking off or whatthehellever.

Greenskar 05-13-2012 05:16 PM

That certainly wasn't my intention. I only wanted to express the lack of creativity and good story this series has versus other existing ones as reasons for my dislike and offer those as reasons for seeking an alternative to getting an Avengers reading fix.

If you like the story, do not feel bad about continuing it if you're already invested through the current arc. If it truly disappoints you in the end discontinue buying it. Please keep in mind, critics like Jason and myself tend to be pretty outspoken with our opinions on these stories because we've read a lot of comics and seen much of the best and worst there's been to offer. All that really means is that we have a lot more to compare to than the average comic reader just looking to expand on the mythology of a movie or cartoon they really enjoyed. Don't let us spoil your fun if you really are liking it.

We certainly don't like it, but that doesn't mean someone with no prior knowledge of Marvel Comics 616 continuity shouldn't. And I'm willing to bet that's what the strategy was that Marvel was banking on going forward with this book. Sales figures will be the measure by which that success is ultimately determined regardless of bad critic reviews.

One only needs to see the money Transformers films have pulled in despite bad critic reviews to justify that statement.

shortysben 05-13-2012 05:19 PM

I mean I do see what you mean, as I am a very novice reader, I kinda got the vibe that it might be meant for first timers, it's all good though

bmorr 05-13-2012 05:47 PM

if you want to get into marvel comics, i suggest, although sometimes its not the case, their .1 issues. Most titles have/had them. ask your LCS if they have any copies. They're basically an isssue of recaps and slight character intros wrapped into the existing continuity. Doesnt always work out.

shortysben 05-13-2012 09:10 PM

I know, I know, right now I am a lite reader I would say. I got caught up on some good stuff all of last year as I had the Digi Sub. But now I would say that I only pick up like 5-7 titles...

Kaewin 05-14-2012 08:44 PM

I got the first issue and may stay around for Zodiac, love them when I first saw them in Avengers 121. Beyond that most likely not. I am getting so much new stuff that I can't get old stuff and that upsets me. Silver Age really are the best books. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Silver Age
