I don't buy the crown jewel argument at all. That doesn't give Hasbro a blank check to price something wildly out of touch with actual costs. They got greedy and it bit them in the ass. I know plenty of collectors who don't own a Hot Toys figure because of the price point. No one is saying we wanted a "bargain" price. A fair price, yes. I'm so happy this failed so that Hasbro dials back the greed and incompetence a little bit.

Hopefully the rancor is worth it. I tend to stay away from the high end collectibles but they do look neat. I love cheap thrills lol

I think Hasbro and fans need to get on the same page.

Is a Hasblab meant to sell one item as the main course with the tiers being small sides.

or

Is a Haslab meant to sell tiers with the initial figures being the theme of a three course meal?

How much do you think making something the Rancor costs? Some people are stuck in this mindset that it would cost Hasbro $50 to prototype/produce/ship something of Rancor's size and they are making a $300 profit.
Yeah a lot of collectors don't own Hot Toys and many others do. Can't buy/afford everything. Being expensive is not in itself greedy or unfair.

But

That doesn't mean a $350 Rancor was feasible even if the price is "fair". I think they miscalculated the fanbase here among other questionable choices that made this an uphill battle.

In the end, the backer count demonstrated that right now the demand for the item at that price point doesn't match Hasbro's requirements.

That it got so close though means they could potentially succeed at a later date and if possible find ways to knock the price down. Rework some of the tiers or improve the main attraction.

You know, guys- it's not too late to back the cheaper, far more cool stuff included, classic, iconic, much upgraded over the '83 (or any subsequent release) Sky Striker:

Three Haslabs in December was just a stupid idea to begin with. I like all three properties, but I decided to go with the Sky Striker. Hasbro pretty much split their customers, and it bit them in the ass with the Rancor.

Looks like the fans have spoken. I wonder what cascading effects will result from this egg on the face.

Condolences to those that wanted this; had this happened to Galactus, which I feared it would, I'd have been fuming.

Edit: With Galactus funded, I'm not certain what use I'd have for another Marvel Haslab. Anything I might pony up for wouldn't have enough appeal across 616/MCU fan groups to reach funding.

The Stranger? Shuma Gorath? Red Ronin? Living Tribunal? Dormammu? A giant High Evolutionary? Magus? Tenebrous? Aegis? Nah

I don't think there are even enough hardcore Thor fans to fund a proper Surtur, or Ymir.

deecee4 12-07-2021 05:38 PM

They were like 500-something away, wonder why Hasbro couldn't extend it like they did for Unicron.

What if, instead of a huge single figure, they used the Haslab to make a wave of figures that could never work at retail? :p

I think it would be cool if they did a 4? scale Xavier school for gifted students or blackbird, avengers mansion or daily bugle.

The theory is that Hasbro didn't really want to make it if only ~9,000 backers were going in. They counted on it getting higher, even if 9,000 was the minimum. So they had no incentive to let it limp across the finish line.

It makes sense to me. It also dilutes the projects if everyone knows an extension is coming.

MeLikeJinx 12-07-2021 08:32 PM

Whoa, so the Rancor didn't make it, but the Skystriker did... good job Joe fans. Too bad the Top Gun 2 movie got delayed... guarantee F-14 nostalgia would have also helped to get more orders in.

I could get behind that action. Goblin Queen, Son of Satan, Belasco, Clea, Chthon, horned Satana, Moondragon, Titania, Malice Sue Storm, and hound Rachel Summers. Alternatively, I'd love full complements of obscure team sets like the Inhumans, Squadron Supreme, OG Guardians, Eternals, the rest of Alpha Flight, Omega Flight, the Slingers, all of Galactus' heralds, the Elders of the Universe, etc

However, the same problem exists in that I'm not sure there would be enough support. "Recency bias" is a real thing and newer fans may not sign up for what they can't easily wiki...

Well, I'd be happy for Marvel Universe fans that have been officially left out in the cold for roughly a decade. For the 6" legends line? I wouldn't support any of those. No offense meant, but I'd rather support an amazing diorama artist for equal amounts before that sort of Haslab.

Unicron only got extended because of the initial feedback, confusion, and some logistical problems with the project (and possibly because Transformers is Hasbro’s baby). That just wasn't in the cards here.

I also think it's because Unicron was the first Haslab project so they really wanted to have a win out of the gate.

Jabbas barge was the first followed by, I think, the failed cookie monster campaign.

D'oh, completely forgot about the barge :o

TheBlueMarvel 12-11-2021 03:45 PM

Didn't Jabba's barge just barely fund?

Benn Roe 12-11-2021 10:34 PM

Yeah, the sentinel was the first run-away success, but then the Razor Crest, HeroQuest, Galactus (eventually), and Victory Saber all more or less followed suit, so it would seem Hasbro (or at least certain teams) got a little apathetic.

GizmoTron 12-13-2021 05:15 AM

Certain fans did as well, there was more time worrying about what Tier 4 was going to be rather than be invested in the actual Rancor.

It was similar in that it took until the last day or two to fund, I think 5,000 was the goal, and it blew past it to around 8,000 units if I remember.
