Harbinger 04-05-2017 03:51 PM

I have yet to see a wal mart black panther.

Bearjew 04-05-2017 03:53 PM

I have yet to see any Black Panther

AugustusCole 04-05-2017 03:58 PM

Do you guys collect more for what items will be worth, or because you really enjoy the characters? Or maybe it is some of both of these things?

Thanks.

Collecting toys for potential value/possible resale is a sucker's game, my friend, because the value of a toy is really subjective. You could find someone looking to spend over a hundred dollars on a single 6" figure, but unless you find that person, you're pretty much out of luck.

For me, it's one of three factors (or a combination):

1- I have an appreciation for the character (most common factor)
2- The figure, regardless of the character, is just an awesome-looking toy
3- It fills a "hole" I feel my collection has (IE, the last member of a team or specific themed group)

I'm sure there's other reasons for other collectors. Anyone got any other collecting motivations?

I collect on:
A) if i like the design of said character or character in general ( deadpool, darkhawk, enchantress, Spider-Biznatch as examples )
B) Do I need it to finish a baf or team
C) Do i need it for Custom purposes

Augustus_Cole 04-05-2017 04:34 PM

i'm collecting because..

1. the fantasy worlds i enjoy have been realized in little plastic form..
2. it just looks cool A.F. ( i actually have figs that i have NO IDEA who they really are..lol...but they look good)
3. to BUFFER of the size of the collection...even if its..so-so to me..
IE.. beetle, morbius, speed demon(is that right?) anti-venom. and more...they look okay..they were probably on sale..and the boost my entire marvel squad..
4. they were part of an entire wave i ordered with intention to sell..but for some reason kept it.. (reads: NUKE)

i didn't even keep Nuke with my Legends until he decided to turn up at the bar ;o)

I have seen so many photos of MCU Falcon and Winter Soldier, and I STILL think they're a friggin' myth. Walmart exclusives are the most impossible thing to find here (unless they're Skylanders or Monster High dolls for my wife's collections, and even those are hit-or-miss). Meanwhile, Target is ol' reliable, and TRU has yet to fail me, even if it's much more of an active hunt when looking for those.

But Walmart? Let's just say that I'm very apprehensive about whether or not I'll ever get my hands on that comics Black Panther.

Not really, because IIRC, the stores themselves are buying the right to sell the exclusive. So if anything, they're making more money.

I could be mistaken on my facts there, though, so if anyone in the know could correct me, please do.

Thanks! And you mean SFV? She's in it, in a new costume no less.

That falcon and winter soldier are shelf warming at my local walmart, they have at least 5 of each

Even as a kid, I collected action figures of all kinds: Sci-Fi, fantasy, paramilitary, and super-heroes. But given that I also collected comics, super-hero figures resonated most with me then and now.

As far as value vs enjoyment, although I have many figs worth good money, I collect lines that I find to be cool/appealing. Enjoyment trumps value every time. Nice question, by the way...

While I have a few who are worth a bit I really have always collected for my personal enjoyment and stress relief. As far back as the old Mego days I've been collecting and it's always been about the hunt, the adding of a new character to my little universe, the feeling of being rewarded for making thru a work week lol, or even sentimental value i.e. a gift given by my family to me. Many of my figures have such a value like I have fond memories attached to various ones, that is the true value to me anyway.

No one place gets the job done.

@TBM

1st. i read your first point about 6 times...and laughed every single time....
2nd. maybe falcon had one of them mammas that greased his face up before he went outside everyday..so it's what he's used to..product of his environment and such...

i usually order whole waves from BBTS. normally i end up buying each spiderman wave in it's entirety. i have done a few preorders from dorkside and also amazon. i just feel the department stores locally are usually very behind most of time and sometimes they don't even stock anything new... while im not trying to push wal mart, because i don't work there or anything like that. it's just most convenient to tell my girl "hey, let's take a ride to wal-mart" and or ask my dad " hey you want to go to wal-mart".

if i were to try asking anyone to take a ride with me to TRU or target, i would get smart ass comments from everyone, because they know the only reason im going to those stores are for toys. or as my dad and uncle like to screw around me with and say " looking for new dolls" ? lol

I collect because I enjoy the characters. I've tried going all in on a couple of toylines in the past but I found it very unfulfilling and a waste of money. If you want to collect toys that will go up in value, then collect Lego sets instead of action figures. You'll get a higher return on Legos.

Usually love of character but more just love of action figures... I try to buy just characters I like but then need a figure to complete a BAF or I have an idea for a picture and need a character I have no interest in or want to build a figure myself and need either an accessory or piece from a figure... or a character I don't like is on a team that I like and i need it to complete the team... I'm no Dr. but I bet there is some weird OCD thing going on... And yeah, every now and then I buy a figure I don't really want because of potential HOT value... but I've never sold anything so the buying of said HOT item tends to just go in a box and take up closet space... SMH....

I collect because I have awful impulse control when I'm looking at figures. Brick and mortar stores, online stores, eBay, the list goes on...

For a more concrete answer, I collect what strikes my fancy and because I like the character or want to complete a BAF. I don't ever think about how much a toy will be worth later because I don't sell my stuff (though Lord knows I should sell some of it at some point to make room for new stuff).

Weapon X 04-05-2017 11:11 PM

I collect figures because I believe it prevents people from farting in my cereal.

I collect because i'm already a comic collector, and seeing that they make figures of some of the characters im very fond of were always so tempting.

So since getting back into comics in 2014 i had to get on the marvel legends wagon. Haven't looked back.

Totally the characters. If I wanted to use my money to make more money, I would probably invest in property or perhaps a promising business - I certainly would not collect action figures/toys.
