GI Joe Back To The Future Noir

Originally posted by: Shin Densetsu @ Hisstank.com

Broken Frontier interviewed Andy Schmidt of IDW recently, and talked about the newest GI Joe Comic, GI Joe Future Noir.

BROKEN FRONTIER: What’s the significance of the title Future Noir beyond just sounding cool?

ANDY SCHMIDT: Honestly, it's mostly that it sounds cool. This is one project where I just let my gut go and had as much fun as possible. Kind of went in some crazy directions for a G.I. Joe story. Of course I made sure that the story makes sense and flows and that there are good character arcs and such, but this is a let's-just-have-fun kind of project. Keison (the artist with many names), Carlos the editor and I just had a blast putting this together. And we didn't have a title. We'd been calling it G.I. Joe: Manga, but that wasn't exactly what the book was, and so we just hit on Future Noir as sounding cool and evoking what the book is. It's not true noir, but it is set in the future.

So what do you think of Future Noir so far?

GI Joe Renegades Premiere Sound Off

After an initial premiere date for 10/10/10 was hinted at, after numerous
delays, another hint, an accurate listing, finally, an official confirmation, and more premiere details, GI Joe Renegades finally premiered earlier today. In the months leading up to this event, there has been lots of speculation, debating, theorizing, rants, apologist dribble, fanboy rants, moments of clarity, episodes of mispelling and apparent(alleged) scientific data disputing the death(DETH OB TEH LINE) or reinvigoration of the brand due to this one cartoon.

What impact this Renegades cartoon will have remains to be seen, but what can be shared, is what you, the fandom, thinks of this, and we'd like to hear it. So join the ongoing discussion and let us know what you think!

Well...ah yes the gold-faced Cobra Viper. We never saw one officially released for the GI Joe 25th Anniversary line.....well until now. Factory error? Inadvertent example of "good things come to those who wait"? Chrome "yellowing"? What?!

The aforementioned boards members found Hall Of Heroes Cobra Vipers with gold face helmets. Or gold visors. Whatever. Both were found at Tj Maxx/Marshalls, and Toys R Us Express. In fact, some of us may have gold-face Hall of Heroes Vipers without even realizing it. Hard to believe at 1st, in fact, it brought back memories of a random guy and his "alleged" variant from a few years back. This Viper variant is not the same as the one which was supposed to be released in the canceled Modern Era Viper 5 Pack we told you about early last year. The helmet on the canceled 5 pack version lacked a vacuum metalized faceplate, had removable goggles, in fact the head sculpt was different entirely, and the wrists were not "fixed". In a way, the recent "variant" found is arguably the superior version. More photographic evidence after the jump!

Or maybe not.

Pursuit Of Cobra Wave 3 Desert Battle Snake E

Originally posted by: Shin Densetsu @ Hisstank.com

HISS Tank boards member japanX80 has shared images of his newly acquired Wave 3 Desert Battle Snake Eyes from the Pursuit Of Cobra line. Anyone notice that during the past few years, Hasbro seemingly releases a Snake Eyes figure that is collectively anticipated by the fandom? Last year it was City Strike Snake Eyes, and right when diehards seemingly swore off getting another Snake Eyes figure, Hasbro unleashed the prototype for the newest Snake Eyes figure at JoeCon 2010. Most fans were pleasantly surprised, however the unveiling was somewhat bittersweet. The fandom was collectively disappointed when it was stated that the figure would have a variant and that both heads would not be included. A collective sigh of relief came when Hasbro announced months later, that both heads would be included, with no variants.

So this figure has been shipping out to those of you who preordered it online, via our site sponsors. Both heads feature all new sculpts based on the iconic looks for Snake Eyes, with the commando goggles, and knight visor(similar to the way Robert Atkins draws Snake Eyes). In addition, this figure features a wealth of weapons or accessories, if you didn't like Snake Eyes as a ninja, bam, tons o' guns. If you liked him as a ninja, this figure comes with 3 swords. Liked him as a ninja commando? No matter what, you're all set with this figure. More images of the latest take on the iconic silent ninja commando, after the jump! Could a Storm Shadow made in a similar vein follow in 2011?

Wave 3 Storm Shadow Prepro VS Final

Originally posted by: Shin Densetsu @ Hisstank.com

Quote:

Earlier this year, we showed you a 2011 Storm Shadow Preproduction Gallery. At the time, it was thought that the Storm Shadow figure in question was a preproduction sample of the Pursuit Of Cobra Wave 3 Storm Shadow. However, upon closer inspection, the heads are actually different. While both share similar styling reminiscent of Hayabusa Ryu from Ninja Gaiden(the Xbox and later versions), the prepro head lacks the added "folds" on the sides of the mask, and a less pronounced crest. In fact, the crest is completely different but shares a similar silhouette. The creases/folds on the parts covering the mouth are less pronounced, and the back of the head sculpt on the prepro version is completely different. Higher up, near the eyes, the mask sculpt is more rounded on the prepro sample, and not as wide.

Now one could say "oh it's just a prototype", but the thing is, the prepro sample wasn't cast from resin, it's plastic, produced from a production mold. Normally canceled items which only made it to the resin sculpting stage, never make it to retail, yet items which make it as far as having steel molds made for them...eventually see the light of day at retail.

With over half a year before the GI Joe Renegades line hits retail, and the Pursuit Of Cobra line still widely embraced by the fandom, could more figures from POC be on the way? Anyone else smell a Arashikage Ninja 2 pack? Anyone remember a Possible Training Snake Eyes? More images after the jump.

Clunsdy of ACTOYS has posted all new high res images of Duke from Pursuit Of Cobra Wave 3. Some fans already look at this version as the definitive modern Duke figure. It made quite an impression at JoeCon 2010.

Yet what kind of impression does this new Duke figure leave on you? Once fans got a glimpse at GI Joe Renegades, there were immediate comparisons of this figure with the animation design for Renegades Duke. There are differences, yet we'd be remiss to ignore the resemblance. Could this figure be indicative of how Renegades figures will look? More images after the jump.

Totally Tubular 80's Toys Review and Intervie

Originally posted by: C.I.A.D. @ Hisstank.com

Quote:

The 1980's were a time of great imagination for many of us. The U.S. beat Russia for Hockey gold at the 1980 Olympics, Michael Jackson's Thriller won eight Grammy awards and the Berlin wall still stood strong as a barrier between East & West Germany.

During this same time, legislation was passed that gave toy manufacturers the ability to promote their products via 30-minute commercial slots which we lovingly refer to as cartoons. The first to appear on T.V. and appeal to boys and girls alike was He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. This set up the industry for what was a decade of hit cartoons and toy lines to accompany them.

Kids were captivated, spending hours upon hours reenacting scenes from their favorite animated programs with toys made in their favorite character's likeness. I can recall hours setting up my G.I.Joes & Transformers, Star Wars and Thundercats for epic battles around the house.

MWB, better known as Mark W. Bellomo, is no stranger to this concept. For those of you who are unfamiliar with his work, well...thanks for coming out from under that rock! Mark is one of the country's leading authorities on all things collectible and has been a "fan boy" for as long, if not longer than many of us today. Think of him as Yoda...only younger...and not green at all.

MWB's body of work is rather impressive, including titles such as The Transformers: Identification and Price Guide and The Ultimate Guide to G.I.Joe, a title that many collectors refer to as the G.I.Joe Bible. Mark recently teamed up with our good friend Flophouse to create a series entitled Collectable Spectacle , where we were introduced to Mark's massive collection for the first time. Many collectors gasped after seeing the treasures found behind the locked doors of Mark's storage unit. Many of us wondered: "Wow, I wonder what else is in there?"...well wonder no more.

MWB has released a new book entitled Totally Tubular 80's Toys, which IMO is another home run. I had a chance to sit down with MWB and pick his brain about his latest book, trade ideas and hear what lays ahead for our favorite professor.
